Hillbillies and phones don't seem to go together, but that might just be the angle that wins the day. Something like the Caveman commercials might be endearing and funny to the public. For what it's worth, I don't know that the Gecko is great here either

Seems about right, the Gecko should be recognizable enough for the commercials to make sense. Bringing back the hillbilly for a phone commercial, no one would be like "Hey isn't that Willy?" I just don't see it happening, unfortunately.
