So, I think Herbie has this for 2 reasons. The first is that Herbie should be quicker than a Hearse, the second being that VW bugs get better fuel economy than a 1959 Cadillac. But I'm open to arguments if I'm wrong on either point, I don't know a lot about the Ecto-1 in terms of speed and MPG. Just going off the vehicles they're based on.

I'm convinced that the Ghostbusters could engineer the Ecto-1 to run Le Mans.  They would science the shit out of it, so to speak.

That said, Herbie is essentially magical which makes for a tough opponent here.  Especially if they can't proton the bug.

I don't see why they can't. Sure, he's a magic car, but he's not really any more durable than a normal beetle.

Hey, I'm an Ecto-1 supporter, I'd like to see it take a win.

The moment magic car acts possessed or ghosty in any way I vote it gets proton cannoned with extreme prejudice.
