Fists collided into the faces of their respective opponents, causing Leonardo and Rock to stumble away from each other as impact occurred. Both fighters now would move towards two arcade cabinets, causing them to shake and move as their backs had hit them, causing the players who were working the machines to now move quickly away from their game. Shaking his head to fight off the momentary effects of a small daze, Rock mentally attuned himself to the energy which was burning within him and channeled it through his entire body and directed it to flow through his right arm and hand. A burst of energy formed within the palm of his hand, manifesting like a blue flame. Quickly, he would swing his hand upward and direct the energy to move along the floor towards the red masked Turtle before him.

“REPPU-KEN!”

The energy wave traveled at quick speeds towards Leonardo, but the Turtle had seen many of these energy based attacks before— he had even experienced a few of them first hand. He wasn’t going to fall prey to them if he could help it. Quickly, Leonardo rushed right in towards Rock, only to then pounce at an arcade cabinet and rebounded off from it and he took aim for the young fighter’s face and swung his right arm across as he gripped his ninjaken firmly in his grasp. Impact was made as Leonardo’s fist landed onto the side of Rock’s cheek, causing the young fighter to stumble over to the side. Leonardo quickly then had swung his left leg horizontally across to the right, taking aim for his opponent’s mid-section and his foot would firmly smack into the mid-section of his opponent. Rock Howard lurched forward as he gasped, trying to get his breath of air back.

Without any hesitation, Leonardo then tensed up all of the muscles within his legs and pushed himself forward and up—now firmly planting his feet down onto Rock’s chest, causing the young fighter to now stumble back and he would collide into another arcade game, slamming down onto a ski-ball lane flat on his back.

Seizing the opportunity, the mutant Red Ear Slider quickly rushed in towards his downed competitor as he twirled his blades within his grasp, now gripping them to hold them in reverse and he raised his arms— positioning his blades downward. He took to the air, and descended towards Rock only to thrust his arms down for a stabbing thrust. Rock reacted quickly and accordingly as he threw his weight to the left and managed to evade Leonardo, as the Turtle managed to plunge his twin steel blades into the ski-ball lane. Leonardo unfortunately managed to plunge them into deep and too hard, and was forced to pull on the handles. Rock bolted to his feet and he rushed right in on the Turtle, and quickly went onto the assault as he swung his right and left arm across, followed up by then snapping his left leg forward and out for Leonardo’s mid-section. The Turtle was met with two fist across the face, and he dropped back from the powerful kick delivered by the blonde haired fighter, also managing to pull his twin swords out from the ski-ball lane.

Leonardo shook his head, fighting off his ow momentary daze as he now stepped forth and dashed right in towards Rock. As he neared the young South Town fighter, Leonardo quickly then would swing his right arm horizontally to the left, slashing his sword across as he took aim for Rock’s mid-section once more. Quickly, Rock managed to side-step out of the way of the incoming blade but… barely so as Leonardo zoomed in. And there was a brief breeze which Rock felt on his chest, and as he looked down— he noticed that part of his jacket and his shirt had been cut. Had Rock been a split-second slower, he would’ve had blood drawn from that one strike.

The red masked Turtle then would turn in a spin and he took aim for Rock’s head, and he swung both his arms down, moving his blades diagonally to the right as he moved the swords down for Rock’s neck. Widening his eyes in horror, Rock prepared for what could be the last few moments of his life. But he would find that wouldn’t come… As Leonardo would pull his arms back and instead leaned up and thrust his right leg up with his knee bent out, and Rock’s chin would be firmly impacted by the Turtle. A wash of pain entered his mouth as his lower teeth grinded against his upper teeth, and he was forced to briefly shut his eyes from the pain. Leonardo followed up by spinning his blades and he gripped them right side up, only to then swing his arms down and batted the handles of his weapons down onto the top of the South Town fighter’s head, causing Rock to hunch down from the impact. Turning in a spin and a crouch, Leonardo turned his blades for the flat side to face forward and swung them across to the left, aiming for Rock’s legs and he managed to strike hard enough to knock the young man off from his feet.

Rock slammed down onto his side, and took a moment to register what had occurred.

But that time wouldn’t be long as he watched as Leonardo now rushed in for another strike. Rock then placed his hands to the ground, and curled his lower half back and up. He pushed himself upwards and threw his weight to the right, and spun through the air like a top as he kicked his right leg upward. Rock Howard now would aim to deploy technique which he had picked up from his many sparring sessions with Terry Bogard, and he planned on putting it to good use here.

“RISING TACKLE!”

Leonardo would suddenly find himself being impacted in the chin, and being dragged further into the attack oly to then be sent tumbling to the ground. He hit the carpeted floor of the arcade and now shook his head from side to side, as he realized what he had been hit with. He widened his eyes as he took a second to recollect his battle with Terry Bogard. The red masked mutant Terrapin glared to Rock, realizing that he probably had trained under the fighter whom he had been beaten by. Leonardo just managed to earn his redemption and now it was coming under threat again? To Leonardo— this was unacceptable!

Quickly rising to his feet, Leonardo rushed right in towards Rock once more. Without hesitation, he would swing his left arm back across horizontally, aiming to slash away at his opponent. Rock hopped away from the incoming sword. Leonardo then swung his ninjaken in his right hand vertically down, but Rock immediately raised his arms and positioned them to redirect the Turtle’s weapon away from him, grabbing onto his wrist and forcing the Turtle to drop his ninjaken. Pushing himself to be airborne, Rock turned and he would swing his left leg downward in an axe kick like manner, executing a technique which was a combination of his father’s own Aikijutsu technique, and Terry’s own Crack Shoot—a technique he liked to call the Crack Counter. Rock’s heel would strike Leonardo firmly onto the back of his head, causing the Turtle to buckle over.

Attuning himself to the energy within, Rock intended to finish this fight quickly. Gathering his power, he focused it to channel through his arms and into his hands. As he raised them, a burst of energy erupted from his palms and appeared much like a blue flame. An energetic hum emanated from all of this, and Rock shot a glare to the red masked ninja as he prepared one of his most devastating moves in his arsenal.

“RAISING STO—GHAAAAAGHHH!”

Rock was interrupted as a three digit hand took hold of his jaw line, and the other hand shoved the handle of one of the remaining ninjaken swords that was kept in Leonardo’s grasp in his right hand firmly down Rock’s mouth and into his throat. This caused the South Town fighter to choke as he jerked about, flailing his arms about as he lost his concentration over his own energy.

“YEAH, LEO!! KICK HIS ASS!” Raphael shouted.

The red masked leader of the Turtles pushed Rock ahead, now slamming him back first into a Data East game cabinet. Rock planted his hands onto his opponent’s shoulders, pushing him away but Leonardo firmly took hold of his head within his left hand, and shoved it into the cabinet firmly. The mutant Red Ear Slider firmly slammed his right fist into Rock’s mid-section, and then followed up by leaning forward and pushing his right knee into his stomach region. Rock doubled over as he gasped out, two impacts hitting into him. The Turtle then thrust his arms down, gripping his ninjaken in both hands, firmly hitting Rock onto the center of his back with the blunt end of the sword’s handle. The blonde fighter dropped onto the ground, dazed but still very much willing to fight.

Pushing himself to his feet, Rock then rushed at Leonardo—he turned with his weight, and jabbed with his left and right, taking aim for the Turtle’s face. Leonardo managed to evade the incoming strikes, leaning from side to side. Rock thrust his right arm out, but then opened his palm and focused whatever energy was inside to project out in a burst. Leonardo leaned to the left, evading the energy blast as it would explode outward. In retaliation, Leonardo turned in a spin to the left, and he would swing his left leg back across, performing a spinning wheel kick as he set his sights on Rock’s head.

Rock Howard suddenly found his head forced to turn and a wash of pain moved through his brain. He stumbled to the side and dropped onto his hands and knees. In a quick burst of rage and desperation, Rock rushed to his feet and then pushed himself forward only to pounce at Leonardo. Again, focusing on his energy, he channeled it to move through his left arm and hand, and a burst of energy erupted forth. He punted his right arm’s elbow out, aiming at the Turtle’s face and plunged his left arm forward and out— performing the Rush Dunk technique.

Leonardo widened his eyes to watch as Rock came at him. Quickly, he raised his left arm to take the collision of the incoming elbow directly. He tensed up every muscle within his body, working to resist the momentum but then something struck into his plastron—and Leonardo was forced to drop back onto his carapace as a small explosion of blue energy made contact with him. Not waiting a moment’s hesitation, Leonardo parted his legs and closed them around Rock’s ankles, only to turn with his weight to the right and forced Rock to fall.

Both the Turtle and the South Town fighter rose to their feet, glaring to one another upon standing and once again rushed right in towards each other.

Rock quickly turned with his weight and he thrust his arms outward, releasing a series of six punches as he took aim for Leonardo’s head. The Turtle ducked and weaved under the incoming punches, managing to evade them with skill and perfect timing. Rock would then swing his left leg across to the right, attempting to land a solid roundhouse kick for Leonardo’s mid-section but was immediately surprised to hit something hard. All this time, he had been thinking that shell was some sort of soft padded material but… it felt like it was armored. Seeing the surprise on Rock’s face, Leonardo leaned forward and rammed his right shoulder into the young fighter. Rock lost his balance, causing him to move back towards another arcade machine and nearly made it topple over. Leo quickly moved in, and he raised his arms overhead, prepared to use his remaining sword for an overhead strike. The blonde fighter widened his eyes and he quickly side-stepped to his right, and allowed Leonardo to bring his sword down, striking at nothing but the machine.

Sparks erupted from the now destroyed arcade machine, and Leonardo pulled his weapon to free it once more. Rock mentally focused on his own energy flow while the Turtle was busy in trying to liberate his weapon, and channeled his energy to move through his body and redirected it to flow into both his arms and hands. He would swing his hands upward and release that energy, now unleashing a rapid fire wave of energy at the mutant Red Ear Slider.

“DOUBLE REPPU-KEN!”

Leonardo would be hit on the side from the incoming energy wave and the reptile winced his eyes in pain as he managed to finally draw his weapon from the arcade cabinet. Rock again focused on his own energy once more, now motioning his hands upwards and unleashing a barrage of the waves at Leonardo. But Leonardo wasn’t having any of it, and he would side-step, somersault, and use arcade cabinets to evade the incoming waves. He pounced forward, now wrapping his hands around his remaining ninjaken sword and swung it down for an overhead strike. Rock quickly aimed to move to his left, but suddenly felt a sharp, hot pain entering his shoulder—and he looked to it, noticing a tear in the fabric of his leather jacket and some minor bleeding. Leonardo managed to graze him.

Rock ran in towards the Turtle, and he snapped his left leg forward and out as he aimed it for Leonardo’s head to perform a solid side kick, but the Turtle managed to swerve to the left, avoiding the incoming strike. Not wanting to let up, Rock then would swing his arms across as he aimed to land a solid strike onto the red masked ninja’s head. Leo would lean back, avoiding the strikes as swiftly as possible. In retaliation, he would swing his left across for Rock’s jaw— and a solid blow was landed. Rock stood his ground, not wanting to lose this battle. In retaliation, Rock would lean forward and he’d swing his right arm up, aiming to deliver a solid uppercut onto Leonardo. The Turtle felt his head jerk back and a wash of pain overwhelmed his senses. The young South Town fighter moved his arms out, aiming to grab hold of the Turtle in effort to throw him, but seeing this— Leonardo twirled his ninjaken within his right, and then thrust it down in a stabbing motion for Rock’s left foot.

Rock widened his eyes, now losing his hold on the Turtle as he watched as cold solid steel penetrated the top of his boot, and he could feel the metal between his big and second toe. He shot a glare to Leonardo. Leonardo returned the gesture. Both knew that this fight needed to end as soon as possible.

Summoning the reserves of strength within, Leonardo and Rock Howard turned with their weight as they leaned forward with their punches. Both made impact…. And just as this fight began, it would end the same way. Both stumbled and dropped onto their sides… Neither was able to rise without difficulty and assistance.

This fight was a draw.

Donatello and Michelangelo rushed over to the semi-conscious Leonardo, and placed their hands underneath Leonardo’s shoulders and helped him up to his feet. This was already looking like a repeat of their battle with Team Fatal Fury— but on the bright side, at least the other team didn’t win either.

“Oh, bloody hell! Now how are we gonna nab this in the bag?” Jenet spoke out as she moved to Rock’s side.

Hotaru followed ahead, and both she and Jenet took hold of Rock Howard by the shoulders, and pulled him up to his feet. The two women looked over to see their opposition and saw that the other team was in the same predicament. It was already the first match and it ended in a draw. Both team leaders took each other down, and there were three more matches to go. Donatello and Michelangelo were examining the bruises on Leonardo’s body, and from what they were able to see, nothing seemingly had been broken thankfully.

The Afro-Brazilian fighter donned in the white Karate gi now stepped forward. He gripped the collar of his dou-gi, tugged it forward before he took hold of his kuro-obi, fastening it.

“I suppose I might as well go next.” Khushnood spoke.

“Go get’em, Mr. Butt!” Jenet cheered on.

Michelangelo, Donatello and Leonardo looked over to one another— pondering who would be next to bat. Then the three brothers now looked to see Khushnood Butt, approaching the middle of the arcade as he was prepared for the next battle. Then Raphael stepped over towards his siblings, and he eyed Leonardo for a moment. He thought back to the fights with Team Fatal Fury, and a small flicker of flame ignited within him.

The Turtles huddled in with one another and then embraced each other in their arms.

“Alright, so… now we gotta fight the Karate guy!” Michelangelo spoke out.

“Kind of reminds me of those Kyokugen guys we fought in the first few matches. Mm’kay… So, Leonardo’s down but then again their leader’s down. No one’s won anything yet… So we’ve got to play this carefully!” Donatello stared to Raphael and Michelangelo.

“If only Master Splinter were here… He’d let us know what to do.” Mikey chimed.

“He sent us to this tournament to learn and adapt, Michelangelo… So, we need to learn to do just that. Now, we just need to figure out who’s going next!” Donatello pondered.

“I’ll go…” Raphael spoke.

And with this… The red masked hot-head now moved his hands to his utility belt and then took hold of his red cloth braided handles of his twin sai and drew the twin weapons out. He rolled his shoulders and now turned his head from side to side, cracking his joints in the process to undo whatever stiffness was in them. He stepped forward, now approaching Khushnood Butt. And now both the Turtle and the Kyokugen fighter stood apart with only five feet of space between them. The Afro-Brazilian fighter stared upon Raphael, sizing him up.

“So, you’re the one who defeated Sensei Robert… Impressive.”

“Might as well skip the pleasantries, man… Let’s just get to business right here and now!”

Raphael twirled his sai with skill in his grasp and grabbed the handles of his weapons to stop them from spinning, setting himself into his stance. Khushnood Butt released a yell from within as he clenched his fists and entered into his own fighting stance.

And the second match between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Team Garou would commence.

Here is the next part of my Mirage TMNT storyline which I am aiming to keep as an on-going project! This part was both easy and difficult to write up-- it was in the sense that I was able to find videos of Rock Howard's moveset and properly incorporate them into the recap fight, but it was difficult in that I needed to write something long and dragged out while also ending it in a draw-- as per according to the votes. I'm not going to hold back in saying that I was disappointed in the outcome, but at least it wasn't a loss for the Turtles, at least... not entirely anyway. Neither side won that battle, so now it's three against three. This also marks the debut of Khushnood Butt from Garou: Mark of the Wolves as well, and I also figured that I might as well put Raphael on this next match up.

For new readers who are just hopping onto this storyline here, I suggest you look at the Mirage TMNT Respect Thread to see what the Mirage Turtles are more than capable of.

Raphael is Low Tier Superhuman in terms of physicals. Think Above Peak Human due to his mutation and training.

Raphael possesses his Twin Sai, Shurikens, Smoke Bombs, and Kunai.

Khushnood Butt is in Peak Conditioning due to his training.

Khushnood has his moveset from the Garou game.

Another great set-up, Rakai! Great recap with Leo and Rock. Aside from the vote, an in-story explanation for the tie here is that Leo may have panicked a bit after seeing in Rock some similar moves to Terry Bogard and got a little reckless in the fight, which I think you were trying to convey in the recap. Getting his ninjaken stuck a couple of times in the arcade environs also allowed Rock to get in some good blows. Heh, I never much considered that the terrain may become a factor in these fights.

Not to discount Rock's skills, though; he does seem to be one of the better SNK fighters.

As for this match, I think Raph can beat this Khushnood Butt dude in a pretty close fight. It looks like both of them could be hotheads at times, but also smart enough to not let their tempers get the best of them. Raph had better be careful not to get his weapons caught like Leo did though, as, depending on the angle and what parts get snared, he may have a tougher time freeing his sais. Raph would also have to watch Khushnood's super moves (especially that rapid punch attack), but Khushnood's older age may give him a disadvantage in stamina.

Thanks for the comments DSkillz!

When writing out this recap, I was actually watching some clips of Godzilla vs Kong, specifically the Hong Kong battle scene and something which was to consider was how the arcade cabinets were going to factor in here, and I took ques from when Kong got his axe stuck in the buildings and pondered if something similar could happen with the ski-ball lane, and a couple of the cabinets as well. I didn't really intend to write Leo as coming off as reckless, but more like trying harder to fight with someone who shared a similar skill set with who he fought before. So, Leo definitely was trying to keep up with trying to keep his redemption and I suppose, even though it was a draw-- it was none the less taken from him.

Environment is definitely something which I wanted for readers to account for, because a lot of things can come into play. I felt like as if this was something which was lacking in the Turtles vs Team Fatal Fury fight, because originally before the fights took to the sewers, it was at a park where there was a fountain and I didn't have a good map reference for it, and only in the last few matches, did I start accounting for environments.

Khushnood Butt, alternatively known as Marco Rodriguez in Japan, is definitely someone who is pretty hot-headed, maybe a little more hot-headed than Raphael since he does lose his temper when the dojo which Ryo Sakazaki runs was closed after Yamazaki beat down every student, and he quickly took off to go find Yamazaki-- at least that's in according to his ending anyway. Raphael definitely has learned to keep his temper in check, and only learned to release it when it's at a time where it will serve him quite well, and now with that flicker of fire in him-- that might help him in the long run of things, so long as he can control it and by the middle of Volume 1 to Volume 4 in the Mirage comics, Raphael's temper has mellowed out a little and he's directed it quite well a few times.

As for close quarters combat, this is something both would excel in but I don't think Raphael would be plunging his sai in any arcade cabinets-- as the sai is meant for intercepting attacks, and then using the handles as a truncheon.

Good work on the recap Rakai, and as DSkillz also mentioned, I did like the added bits of Leo's swords getting stuck in the ski ball court among other places.

This one felt really intense, and you can feel the power going off as each fighter attacks or attempts to attack the other in their showdown here. Both are quite frustrated with the other as they continue to clash, each one just hoping to settle the fight before their stamina gives out, this past match was a close one vote wise, and you did very well in incorporating that into your writing as well. At this point, I certainly feel you're getting the hang off writing for multiple different outcomes for the Turtles given some time, and this recap shows that all the more. Keep it at my friend.

Raph and Butt, or Rodriguez, are going to be pretty close in power and intensity, and I can see this match being close, as each fighter is no slouch in terms of their styles and how proficient they are with said styles in comparison to the other, and thus, Raph will have his work cut out for him here, not any less than Leo to say the least. But, Raph has become mindful of his fighting mishaps, and how to control his anger in a more positive light in battle, so it can be said, that if he could utilize those attributes, while avoiding too much sustained damage and injury from Butt in battle, that Raph might just be able to not only out power the karate based fighter, but also outlast him in terms of mental and emotional balance and focus in combat as well.

The trick for Raph here, is to not attack purely with strength and speed, but to attack with a fair amount of power to maintain offensive and defensive positions around himself, while also wearing Butt down both mentally and physically over time, unto the point where Raph can unleash more and more of his power, unto the point where he can end the match by overwhelming his then exhausted opponent. Personally, I can see Raph accomplishing this, as he has proven that he is capable of controlling his anger in combat, and strategically facing off against opponents who have great strength and abilities before, but he will need to not go to much for the supposed kill here, if he wants to win this one.

I wanted something which conveyed the dire situation which was going on between Leonardo and Rock Howard, mostly because of the way the votes affected the outcome as the previous match is the second match in my storyline where a draw occurred, the first being Donatello vs Andy Bogard. But this was a fight between two Team Leaders, and I figured that both would want to come away from that fight with a victory but neither were able to overcome one another. I also referenced Godzilla vs Kong in a few of the moves which Leonardo and Rock Howard were presented in performing, so if you caught those, kudos to you! 😄

Environment is always a factor when considering fights, and I think that's something which the CBUB could use more of in matches. It gives people something to think about rather than just say Character A beats Character B because of powers, etc...

I absolutely love this assessment between Raphael and Khushnood here as far as where this match could go, and I also like that you kept in mind that Raphael has learned to keep track over his own anger and learned to control it to where it's a benefit to him rather than a detriment. Raphael's struggle with his anger in the Mirage comics was a trait which he had to learn to overcome-- and over the years as the comic went on, Raphael mellowed out but he was still that hot blooded Turtle which we all know and love. I think, or rather I would want to think that this is something which will help him out in the end.

Also, something to consider is that Raphael already fought a Kyokugen-ryu fighter, specifically Robert Garcia in the very beginning of this storyline, and he came out on top. So, he has some experience in fighting against that particular style, but Robert and Butt have different approaches to it, where as Robert had more of a flashy take on it, and Butt has a more solid and grounded form-- like Takuma and Ryo. So there are some techniques which Raphael has seen from Robert, and that might come to play here as his fight with Khushnood Butt progresses.

As I said, I really like your assessment on the whole match here.

Writing a recap of a tie is certainly not fun, but you take to the challenge quite well so kudos for that, RakaiThwei. Both Leonardo and Rock distinguished themselves as great fighters in the match.

As for this fight, I need to do some research before voting. I've heard good things about Garou of the Wolves but I've never played it or any Fatal Fury game. All of my exposure to that specific cast comes from King of Fighters which Mr. Khushnood Butt is not a part of.

Well, I think we have until Friday afternoon for you to figure out who could potentially win this particular battle!

Basically, Khushnood Butt takes the role which Ryo Sakazaki left void in terms of the timeline which Garou is set in (which is part of the AOF-FF timeline, and not so much KOF) and follows Kyokugen in a very rigid fashion but as per the begining of this arc, Raphael did take on a Kyokugen fighter, specifically Robert Garcia.
