Chapter 18: What Lies Beneath

A cloud of fire and smoke rose up to the skies above. With multiple explosions throughout the legendary island, Kong quickly perked his head up as the powerful sounds caught his attention. Without a second thought, the island's protector sprang into action as he charged toward the sound of the largest explosion. As he ran across the large island, he thought about the many outsiders who found themselves on his island. The powerful warrior roared out as his thoughts fell upon the many adversaries that he had faced over the years. From the vicious skullcrawlers to the terrifying dinosaurs, the King of Skull Island was more than ready to face whatever threat had come to his home. In the distance, he could hear the dreadful screeches from a sinister beast. The giant ape gritted his teeth as he could see the shoreline in the distance. Kong could not help but wonder if this adversary was some sort of offspring of the Kraken.

With an extraordinary leap, the King of Skull Island was high over the world. The ground shook after the Great Ape landed before the terror of the deep. With screeching cry, the sea beast known as Ebirah let out a dreadful roar. Kong pounded his chest with his powerful fists and roared back in defiance. Ebirah pushed forward to face off against the King of Skull Island. Without a second thought, Kong charged toward the beast and the battle ensued on the beach. While standing in the trees, Princess Nuala and the young native girl watched as a clash of titans occurred before them. With each punch and attack, the ground shook and the trees moved all directions. The screeching roars of the sea beast soon turned to cries as it soon realized that the battle would be lost. Despite Ebirah's best attempts to defeat the legendary king, it soon made every attempted to flee from the island of myth.

As Ebirah tried to escape into the deep blue sea, Kong grabbed the beast and dragged it back to shore. With all of his rage and strength, the mighty kaiju ripped off the claws of the sea beast. The terror from the deep cried out in agony as Kong let go over the giant creature. Weakened and defeated, Ebirah crawled back into the water. Kong held up one of the sea monster's claws high up in the air and unleashed a victorious roar that echoed all throughout Skull Island. With his other fist clinched tight, the King of Skull Island pounded his chest and bathed in his enemy's defeat. He lowered his fist and slowly turned around to face the tree line. His large dark eyes caught the sight of a young girl that was a native to the island. He then saw a creature not much bigger than the young girl. She resembled a human but she was different. There was a peaceful presence about this creature that took hold of Kong. The burning rage and desire for battle that lingered within the Great Ape had soon faded away.

Kong let out a sigh as he dropped his head. He dragged one of the large claws of Ebirah with him to eat on a later time. The Great Ape of Skull Island had faced many enemies in his lifetimes and had encountered a great many strangers on his island. That feeling that came upon him when he locked eyes with that small female creature was something he had not felt in ages. He felt at peace and he felt a sense of calm. King Kong took the claw of Ebirah toward one of Skull Island's largest cliffs. He sat back against the mountain and looked over the island. The early rays of the sun brought a beauty to the island that Kong had seen many times in his life. Kong let out a breath while enjoying the beauty that surrounded the island. He reached into the claw of the beast and scooped out the meat with his hand. Kong stuffed his hand back in his mouth while looking over the island that he called home. While sitting back and eating his breakfast, his thoughts were still on that small peaceful creature.

The guardian and protector of Skull Island did not want to let go of that peace that he felt during that moment on the beach. He leaned his head against the mountain and tried to remember his family. As hard as he tried, he could not remember his parents. He could barely remember a time that he felt anything that resembled peace. The Eighth Wonder of the World closed his eyes and shook his head with groan. The Great Ape almost growled while struggling to find a memory that was as peaceful as the moment that he laid eyes on that small female creature in the trees. All he ever knew in his life was fighting. Kong slowly opened his eyes and ate the rest of the meat from Ebirah’s claw. He tossed away the remains of the claw and looked up at the beautiful blue sky. The Great Ape shook his head as he pushed himself up to his feet. He knew that the village of the Skull Island natives was near, and he felt that the small creature would be among the villagers.

As a way of feeling that peace once again, Kong set out to find that small female creature once again. He stepped away from the mountain and made his way toward the village. While he walked across the island, he could hear the many strange creatures that lurked around the island. The Great Ape did what he could to evade any of the dangers that preyed on the island. He soon saw smoke from the village up ahead and heard the drumming that came from their instruments. The Mighty Kong looked quietly over the village. His large eyes searched for the woman that he had encountered on the beach. He could see that there were other strangers that were led into the village and welcomed among the natives. At first, the Great Ape could not see the calm female creature. He then felt something in the pit of his chest. Kong gazed down near his feet, and he saw the small pale female. He stepped back and leaned down to see her more clearly. The King of Skull Island did not realize that this small creature was the Elf Princess of Bethmoora.

After Milo returned to the beach, he told the crew about what had happened. He was initially met with ridicule until they heard an explosion that almost rocked the entire island. The explosion came from the other side of the island. Before anyone could react, they heard the explosives being set off by their comrad, Vinny. Sweet screamed out for some of the crew to grab their weapons so that they could go find out what was happening. Before they could gather their gear, Vinny walked out onto the beach. There was a victorious smile plastered underneath the thick, dark mustache on his face. He walked back up to the rest of the crew and said with his thick accent that he is now an exterminator. The crew looked over at Milo and then back at Vinny. Sweet chuckled as he grabbed Milo by the shoulders and started apologizing for not believing him earlier.

Before they could mourn the loss of the expedition leader, Milo looked off in the distance. He saw a cloud of smoke rising from the other side of the island. He glanced back at Vinny who was celebrating his victory over the giant ant. While many of the crew members stood around the demolition expert, Milo took another glance at the smoke in the distance. He realized that there was another explosion on the other side of the island. Milo tried speaking up over the sounds of the crowd and wrestled his way through to the center of the group. Vinny was in the middle of everyone while recounting his battle against the giant insect. Milo tried speaking up over the crowd once again but found himself lost in the crowd. Eventually, the historian pressed his finger and thumber against his lips. Milo let out a loud whistle that caused the group to stop and turn their attention to Milo. Once everyone went quiet and all their eyes were on the historian, Milo let out an awkward chuckle.

“So, what about the other explosion?” Milo asked with a forced smile while pointing out at the direction of the smoke.

“Yeah, that wasn’t me. I wish I could say that it was, but it wasn’t me.” Vinny said while looking over the cloud of smoke.

Sweet looked off into the distance and then turned his attention back to the crew. “Milo, Vinny, Mole, Bertha, Cookie, and Audrey are with me. The rest of you, get this ship back in working order.” Sweet ordered.

“Are you serious?” Bertha asked while biting down on her cigarette. “Of course, you are serious.” She said while shaking her head.

“We won’t be gone long.” Sweet said with a smile.

“You know, I should be here with the ship!” Audrey exclaimed.

“Probably, but there may be something that we can salvage from that explosion, and I think I could use the best darn mechanic I know to do just that!” Sweet replied.

The group of explorers ventured through the forest and toward the direction of the smoke. Along their journey, they could hear a screeching roar that shook them to their core. They could also hear a roar that echoed through the trees. The ground beneath them shook and the trees started to rattle. Milo’s eyes widened underneath his large glasses as he tried to make sense of what was taking place. He and the rest of the crew had never seen an island quite like this one before. Vinny would make remarks about the plants and flowers that they had passed along the way. He made comments about how some of the flowers and plant life were species that had not even been discovered. Mole could hardly contain himself with the types of soil that he saw along the way. Sweet did the best he could to keep the short man moving. They eventually reached a clearing and saw beach up ahead.

After walking out onto the beach, they saw what appeared to be a large lobster claw bleeding on the sand. Their mouths dropped as they could not believe what they were seeing. Milo then turned his head and saw what appeared to be a young girl standing in the trees. As his eyes adjusted to the tree line, he could see what appeared to be a pale woman standing beside the young girl. Milo was speechless for a moment as his mind was trying to comprehend what was happening around him. The pale woman was tall and thin. She had yellow eyes and light-colored hair. She almost appeared distressed once she looked over the group. Milo shook his head and tried to signal that they were not them to cause any harm. Before he could say anything, several of the island’s natives came out of the trees. They surrounded Milo and his crew. Sweet and the others immediately threw down their weapons once they saw that they were surrounded.

“We come in peace!” Sweet said while looking over the island’s natives.

Princess Nuala walked out of the trees and stepped closer to the crew. With her telepathic abilities, she could see that they were not there to cause harm. The island’s natives then picked up the weapons and led the crew into the forest. Nuala followed close behind the group while Milo stopped to look back at her. He could tell that she was not human but there was something oddly familiar about her. Milo staggered back to walk alongside the Elvish Princess.

“You’re not from around here either, are you?” Milo asked.

“Why do you say that?” Nuala asked.

“Your clothing is different than the others.” Milo replied with a grin. “You are different from them.”

“I am an elf.” Nuala replied. “Daughter of King Balor.”

“Oh…” Milo said while nodding. “I’m Milo. Milo Thatch.”

“My name is Nuala.” The Elvish Princess replied.

“Where are we?” Milo asked.

“You really did not come searching for this island, did you?” Nuala asked.

“No, uh. We were searching for a lost city but not this island.” Milo replied.

Nuala lifted her hand and saw the mind of Milo Thatch. “You were searching for Atlantis.” Nuala smiled. “My father told me about Atlantis. He said that it was taken by the sea ages ago.”

Milo replied, “Well, yeah but I think it is still around. I…”

“I know. I can see your thoughts and your memories. You search for it to bring honor to your family.” Nuala replied.

“Yeah. That’s right. So, who are you? Where are we?” Milo asked.

“You have many questions, Milo Thatch.” Nuala smiled. “I have them as well. This island is known as Skull Island. I came here to be safe from the evils of the world.” Nuala asked.

“With giant ants and lobsters, this does not seem like a safe place to be.” Milo replied.

“The world of man is not a safe place to be.” Nuala responded as they came upon the village.

The natives welcomed the outsiders into their village with much hospitality. While Milo and the other crew members became acquainted with the natives, Naula walked toward the edge of the village. While she felt a sense of safety with this group of humans, she could not shake the feeling that she shared with the island’s protector. The moment she looked into his large eyes; she could see the pain that he had felt all through his life. After that moment she had looking into Kong’s eyes; she could see not only a warrior’s heart but a broken soul. Her heart had grown heavy while thinking about the guardian of Skull Island. While the crew of explorers became integrated into the customs of the island’s natives, Nuala sauntered away from the village. She could sense the Great Ape approaching the outside of the village. Nuala could see the King of Skull Island towering over the world around. She leaned her head back just to look up at the majestic king

Within the large rocks where Slade's boat crashed, an opening formed beneath the flames. The large explosion caused the island to open up to world beneath our own. Deep under the surface, a hidden world started to rise up. After the violent quakes from the surface shook the world and the powerful explosion tore open the surface, a sinister beast crawled out from beneath the Earth. The bright rays of the sun shined down upon frightening beast from below. Webs spewed out of the creature as it moved across the legendary island. With its many moving legs, Kumonga sought to make this island his own. After quietly moving over the forests, the large arachnid saw forms of life down below. The kaiju sprayed out its webs onto the creatures down below. With his deadly stinger, Kumonga murdered the creatures roaming below and entangled them in his web. While preparing to devour his prey, Kumonga heard an unusual sound echoing through the trees. The sound of beating drums had bounced off the ground beneath giant spider.

Lifting his head at the sound of the beating drums, the giant spider made his way toward the unusual sound. After making his way through the vast jungles, Kumonga had found the source of the beating drums. The image of the village reflected off the many dark eyes of the giant arachnid as he gazed upon the small creatures that resided there. In preparing to attack the village, Kumonga sprayed his webbing across the trees. In the event that any of these small creatures tried to escape from the kaiju, the giant arachnid prepared a trap for his prey. While walking through the forest, one of the natives that was out gathering fruits had seen the large demon hiding in the trees. For the natives of Skull Island, they had seen a great many horrifying creatures throughout their lives, but this was something that they had never come across. The native dropped the fruits that he had gathered on the ground and started to back up.

Before he could turn and run away from the giant spider, the native found himself trapped in the webs of Kumonga. With a blood curdling scream, the native cried out in fear. The village started to scramble as Kumonga jumped out toward the village. The explorers for the Atlantis expedition looked up in horror as they saw a spider that stood high over the village. Before anyone could react, a powerful roar pierced throughout the village. The Mighty Kong leapt over the village and in front of the giant arachnid. The explorers of the Atlantis expedition were in awe of the ape that stood as high as a mountain standing between them and the giant spider. With a horrifying scream, Kumonga spread out his legs and got his stinger ready for battle. Kong pounded his chest and let out an overwhelming roar in defiance. The King of Skull Island ripped a large tree from the Earth and prepared himself for battle against a new foe. Kong was prepared to do whatever it took to defend the village and his new friend from this new enemy.

***********************

The battle takes place in the forest area of Skull Island, just outside of the natives village.

Kong - this is between Kong Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong. He is armed with a tree.

Kumonga - is at full strength.

Given that Kong has dealt with creatures like the Mother Long Legs on Skull Island in the Monsterverse, Kumonga shouldn't be too different from something like them as far as Arachnid type creatures go. The only thing Kumonga has is a more robust form compared to them. Also, Kong has already dealt with more formidable Kaiju compared to Kumonga since then, such as the Kraken.

Kong for the win!

Nice to see Kumonga in a match.

I give the setup a 5.0.
