Chapter 29: Trouble in the Bayou

While the steamboat shook violently, Facilier looked on in horror. The mutant had found a way to turn himself back to normal. His red eyes looked over his hands as he quickly turned his attention back to the Shadow Man. A smirk formed across the side of the Ragin' Cajun's face while he drew the ace of spades from a deck of cards. A bright colored light started to radiate off the card as the mutant's red eyes moved toward the direction of the man in the purple suit. Despite all of his tricks and schemes, Facilier was no match for the Ragin' Cajun. The Shadow Man lifted his hands in defeat while slowly staggering away from the mutant. Facilier stumbled against the railing of the boat and stopped to glance back over the side of the boat for a moment. He looked down at the murky water and then glanced back at the powerful mutant. Gambit took a deep breath in and let out a steady sigh.

"You called me a mutant freak..." Gambit chuckled. "The name is actually Gambit. Remember it!"

Remy threw the ace of spades into the chest of Dr. Facilier. The card exploded in the chest of the Shadow Man. Gambit watched with satisfaction as Dr. Facilier was knocked back into the murky water that surrounded the steamboat. The Ragin' Cajun sauntered toward the railing and looked out at the water. Gambit let out a sigh of relief while looking over his hands and arms once again. While he figured Facilier probably survived being blasted overboard, the mutant did not care. Gambit was overjoyed to be back to normal. He almost laughed at the thought of what Rogue would say if he came back to her as a frog for her birthday. The mutant shook his head as he turned back to walk inside the steamboat. He made his way to what appeared to be a table lined with all sorts of strange oddities. Gambit figured that the Shadow Man was trying his best to find a way to unlock this strange golden bracelet. Remy reached down and picked the ancient relic off the table. He looked over with his red eyes and smirked.

"This would be a mighty fine gift for my cher." He said to himself with a boyish grin. Gambit shook his head and tucked the golden bracelet away in his trench coat. "But it's not the right gift, I suppose." The mutant made his way off the boat and back towards the Crescent City. He watched while the sun set over the St. Louis Cathedral. The jazz started to fade away once night came over the city. As several flocked to the bars and clubs, Remy left the crowded city behind. He ventured far away from the Crescent City and back into the deepest reaches of the swamps. He eventually made it back to the home that belonged to the Voodoo Queen of the Bayou. The door screeched open as the mutant strolled inside with that same boyish smile that he had after defeating the Shadow Man. He sauntered over toward Mama Odie's table and reached into the pocket of his trench coat. The Ragin' Cajun stood back while Mama Odie stumbled over toward the table.

"Oh, you did good, Remy!" Mama Odie exclaimed.

"Did you ever doubt me?" Gambit asked.

"Not at all, Remy! Now, let's take a look in my gumbo and see what you can get for your special cher for her birthday!" Mama Odie laughed. "JUJU, GET ME MY LADLE!"

Meanwhile, a hand emerged from the murky waters that surrounded the Crescent City. After being defeated and humiliated by the powerful mutant, the Shadow Man found the strength to swim back to shore. Facilier pushed himself out of the water and crawled away from the murky shore. He caught his breath while he turned back to see if he was being watched. To his relief, there was no one in sight that could see him. Facilier rose to his feet and stumbled forward. With the sun setting and darkness coming over the city, Facilier tried his best to keep himself hidden in the shadows. After avoiding the crowds that toured around the different streets, the Shadow Man was able to make his back to the location of his old Emporium. He pushed the door open and heard the little chirp up above him as the door opened. The Shadow Man looked around the room to see if there was anything that he could use to disappear.

In the pit of his stomach, he knew that the Mistress of Evil would not be pleased with his failure. He knew all too well what she did to those that failed her. After hurrying around a counter, the Shadow Man started tearing apart drawers and cabinets in search of anything that could help him. Lines of sweat started to run down his forehead as he searched frantically for anything. "There has to be something!" He screamed while flipping over shelves. Breathing heavily, the Shadow Man started pacing back and forth. He then heard a creak in a floor board of the building. Facilier leaned down and rubbed his hands against the floor. He knocked on it and realized that there was a hollow area inside the floor. The Shadow Man lifted up the small section of floor and saw a metal box within the floor. He reached down and opened the box to find a couple rolls of cash.

Still knowing full well that money was the main source of power that fueled this greedy world, he reached into the box to steal the cash. A large, devious grin from across his cheeks while he rose to his feet. He wiped the sweat away from his head and pushed the cash deep into his pockets. The Shadow Man looked around the room once again before turning toward the door. He let out a steady sigh while putting out his hand to open the door. While trying to pull the door open, he realized that the door was stuck. Facilier yanked at the door with all of his strength to pull it open. "Come on! Open!" He yelled while continuing to try ane open the door. The air around soon dropped several degrees and the lights started to grow dim. The Shadow Man staggered back as he looked around the room. Shadows started to move around him as the floor started to rotate. "No! Not again!" He cried out while his eyes looked around the room in horror.

"Leaving so soon, Facilier?" A cold voice called out.

Facilier turned his head and saw the outline of the Dark Fairy.

"Uh, Maleficent? Wha... What are you doing here?" Facilier asked while he stumbled back against a wall.

"You already know the answer to that!" Maleficent screamed as she sauntered closer toward the Shadow Man. "You not only failed to unlock the bracelet but you lost it!"

"I... I can get it back. I know where it is!" Facilier stuttered.

"Do you know what I do to the fools that fail me?!" Maleficent screamed.

"Please... I can get it back... I can make this right!" Facilier pleaded.

"No need for that..." Maleficent said with a calm voice. "I will handle this. I will have mercy on you this time as you can still be of some use to us."

"Oh, thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Mistress!" Facilier exclaimed with a large smile.

"Where is the bracelet?" Maleficent asked while gritting her teeth.

"Mama Odie." Facilier replied as he wiped off the sweat from his mustache.

"After all these years... That old hag is still alive." Maleficent said with a smile. "I will take care of her myself." Maleficent said as she turned toward the door.

"That sounds lovely, Mistress!" Facilier chuckled.

"Oh, and Facilier?" Maleficent said while turned back to face the Shadow Man.

"Yes Mistress." Facilier replied.

"I would not thank me just yet... Your services to my friends and I will not be enjoyable... Not one bit." Maleficent said with a scowl.

In a cloud of green smoke, the Mistress of Evil vanished. Facilier let out a breath while leaning down against a cabinet. "Who are her friends?" He said under his breath as he started contemplating his next move. The Shadow Man slowly sauntered toward the door and pulled it open. He heard the chirp of the bell from up above and looked out into the streets. He watched the crowds of pedestrians pass by as if it were another night in the Crescent City.

Within the raggedy old home that belonged to the Voodoo Queen of the Bayou, the Ragin' Cajun smiled while looking over the gift that he and Mama Odie came up with. He looked up while she scurried around her home to get the right supplies to put the finishing touches on the gift. After they were finished, Gambit wrapped up the gift in a nice bow and glanced over at the golden bracelet that was sitting on the table. His red eyes widen while he gazed upon the dangerous relic and then he shook his head. All of that trouble for something so small and ancient. He contemplated asking Mama Odie what she had planned for the bracelet, but he thought it best to leave it alone. There were far greater things that he had his mind on. The mutant rose to his feet and scooped Rogue's birthday gift off the table. He heard Mama Odie laughing as she started sauntering toward the Ragin' Cajun.

"Next time you come visit me, I want you to bring your cher!" Mama Odie exclaimed with a smile.

"I most definitely will." Gambit replied with a smirk. "As always, Mama, it was a pleasure to see you!"

"Pleasures all mine, dear!" Mama Odie cheered while wrapping her arms around the mutant.

Shortly after the mutant left, Mama Odie walked over toward the golden bracelet. She huffed and puffed while placing it down by her magical pot. Juju slithered down toward the bracelet and coiled up around the golden relic. The old snake then glared up at the Voodoo Queen with widened eyes. Mama Odie then grabbed her ladle and stirred her pot while chanting some words under her breath. Bright lights started to shined out of the pot while the words that Mama Odie was chanting grew louder. Instantly, the lights faded away and the snake started to slither back up to the shoulder of the old Voodoo Queen.

"Well, hopefully the Sorcerer Supreme will arrive soon and take this blasted thing away from my home!" Mama Odie shouted while turning her head toward Juju.

The old green snake nodded his head while the Voodoo Queen chuckled.

"And maybe, just maybe, I can get that Doctor Strange to eat some of my gumbo!" Mama Odie laughed.

A strange feeling started to linger within the chest of the Voodoo Queen of the Bayou. Her ears filled with the sound of thunder while the walls shook violently. Several shots of lightning shot across the sky while rain started pouring down against the raggedy old home. The wind howled as it pushed against Mama Odie's home and she could sense the critters outside her home were trying to find a place to hide. Juju perched himself up on Mama Odie's shoulder while the light in the raggedy old home started to fade. The brightly lit bottles that hung from the walls all started to burst one by one. Juju started trembling while looking over at the eccentric old woman.

"JUJU!" Mama Odie hollered while waving her hands through the air. The shaking stopped and the light soon returned to the raggedy old home. "YOU BETTER TRUST MAMA ODIE!"

A green smoke started to ooze inside from underneath the door of the raggedy old home. Mama Odie frowned as she turned to face the rising green smoke. The smoke soon formed into a frightening image. Juju's eyes widened once again and his mouth dropped wide open as a dark figure emerged from the hellish green smoke.

"Well, well! You have certainly kept up appearances, Voodoo Queen!" Maleficent exclaimed as a large smile from across her pale cheeks.

"I will not let you have the bracelet!" Mama Odie spit out with a scowl on her face.

"Is that any way to welcome a guest, Mama Odie?" Maleficent asked as she started circling around the Voodoo Queen.

"You are no guest of mine, Maleficent! Now leave and never come back!" Mama Odie demanded.

"Not until I take what is rightfully mine." Maleficent said with a grin.

"You will have to pluck it out of my cold dead hands!" Mama Odie screamed.

"Very well then, Voodoo Queen. I will see to it that your reign ends tonight." Maleficent replied as she lifted her hands.

Can Mama Odie stop Maleficent from stealing the Bracelet of Anubis or will Maleficent defeat the Voodoo Queen of the Bayou?

I want Doctor Strange to come and chow down some gumbo. I'm about to go to the kitchen and make some.

Anyway, Mama Odie shouldn't be underestimated but even if she could match Maleficent the dark fairy didn't come unprepared. The dark side wins here.
