Match 20631 Magik (Amanda Sefton) vs. Meggan Braddock

THE XAVIER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT PART 16

TEAMS AND SET-UP

 

 

 

After having sorted out the next match in the tournament being Husk of Generation X going against Jubilee of X-Men Blue, Sage returned her attention to the Excalibur team in front of her, who was the only team to not have a third-round matchup yet.

SAGE: As I was saying a new development has come up and instead of trying to explain everything myself, I figured it would be best to let her do it herself instead.

A bright flash of light illuminated the room and when the flash dimmed, Amanda Sefton appeared before the Excalibur team of Captain Britain, Meggan, Rachel Summers, Cerise, and Kylun.

MEGGAN: Amanda?

RACHEL SUMMERS: What are you doing here?

AMANDA SEFTON: I’ve come here to challenge you. Specifically, you, Meggan Braddock.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN: Huh? Now?

AMANDA SEFTON: Yes.

RACHEL SUMMERS: Sage, since you are involved, I’m assuming this is an official challenge within the framework of the tournament?

SAGE: Correct.

CERISE: How is such a thing possible? Direct challenges were never presented as an option, and she is not part of any of the official teams.

SAGE: Direct challenges were never intended to be a part of this tournament. Amanda was not intended to be here either, she came here of her own volition.

AMANDA SEFTON: With all the powerful heroes here how could I not want to be a part of this. I do have a team, by the way, Dazzler has agreed to give me her spot on the Uncanny team if Meggan agrees to the challenge.

MEGGAN: But why me specifically?

AMANDA SEFTON: Because of Kurt. I know how much his time with you in Excalibur meant to him. Even if your empathic powers nearly caused him to go against his own morality and his dedication to his teammates.

MEGGAN: Huh?

RACHEL SUMMERS: She is referring to the time that Brian broke Kurt’s leg out of jealousy because of how close you two were becoming.

MEGGAN: Oh.

Captain Britain pursed his lips.

RACHEL SUMMERS: Amanda, that was a misunderstanding, and everyone moved on from it. Kurt admitted that he was attracted to Meggan, but that was it.  If you wanted to challenge another woman that Kurt was attracted to, you would have to challenge us all. Kurt and I kissed, we dated and so did Kurt and Cerise. 

CERISE: He was my first Earth romance. It was quite enjoyable.

AMANDA SEFTON: I think you misunderstand. My challenge does not stem from any jealousy or anger over Kurt’s romantic pursuits away from me. Quite the contrary, I was going to say that Kurt was always very complimentary of you, Meggan. He would talk about how incredibly powerful you were and how he was sure no one outside of your team truly understood just how powerful you truly are due to your own modesty and unassuming nature. Thinking back to my brief time with you guys on Excalibur, I tend to agree.  I wanted to get into this tournament because I want to show Kurt I’m ready to be a part of his world within the X-Men. But I want to prove to everyone that I belong, that I can contribute. I figured the best way to do that was to challenge the woman who, with her gifts, once inspired vampires to disobey Dracula and demons of hell to rebel against Blackheart.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN: Amanda, you were once the ruler of Limbo, Sorceress Supreme of that realm. I don’t think anyone here believes that you don’t have the power and ability to hang with the rest of us.

AMANDA SEFTON: Maybe. But there’s one way to be sure.

SAGE: For the record, I already had another opponent lined up for you Meggan. Specifically, it was Rogue. Two women who can fly and have super strength. One who can absorb the energy and powers of anyone she touches, the other who can morph into anyone or anything and mimic their power. It initially jumped out at me as one of the more intriguing pairings, but I am not opposed to this matchup either. Your metamorphosis powers and control of the natural elements, Amanda’s sorcery, both ingrained with a magical aesthetic. It would be quite the show and would give you both a platform to show what you can really do.

RACHEL SUMMERS: Hard to argue with that.

SAGE: But it was important for me to give you the option, Meggan. Amanda has agreed to step aside if you decline her challenge, and we will go back to the original plan. This is meant to be equal for all teams and fighting someone who was not even originally a possibility could be seen as putting you at a disadvantage. The only curveball we have thrown thus far was X-23, and that was only because Generation X was trying to rig the system.  So what do you want to do?

Meggan briefly thought it over. With her empathic powers she could feel the enthusiasm and genuine admiration emanating from Amanda. It immediately inspired her to feel the enthusiasm as well and she quickly came to a decision.

MEGGAN: I accept your challenge Amanda, and I look forward to our battle.

AMANDA SEFTON: Great.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN: Looks like it’s settled.

AMANDA SEFTON: I will go rendezvous with my new team and meet you at the Danger Room.

Amanda teleported away. Kylun, who had remained quiet the entire time, finally spoke up.

KYLUN: This should be interesting.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN: Meggan, if this is what you really want I have all the faith in you.

RACHEL SUMMERS: Absolutely. Let’s keep our winning streak going.

Meggan smiled and just as soon stopped as a realization struck her.

MEGGAN: What about Rogue? Who will she face now if I am facing Amanda?

SAGE: No need to worry. We have another great opponent lined up for her.

CERISE: Let us make our way to the Danger Room and prepare for Meggan’s impending victory.

The Excalibur team and Sage ventured over to the Danger Room where the new Uncanny team of Forge, Shadowcat, Amanda Sefton, Bishop, and X-23 were already waiting for them.

KITTY PRYDE: I have to admit, this isn’t the matchup I had in mind when I thought about our two teams squaring off. Heck, as a founding member of Excalibur I thought there was a good chance I may be involved.

RACHEL SUMMERS: What made Dazzler so willing to give up her spot?

AMANDA SEFTON: She is already a global superstar, but I offered a chance to showcase her music in completely new dimensions. She was intrigued.

KITTY PRYDE: Also, after Longshot bowed out, Allison was keen on joining him in whatever Sage has lined up for them now.

SAGE: They’re not going to get off so easy.

RACHEL SUMMERS: And what about you, Kate? Are you okay with all these drastic changes to your team?

Kitty Pryde laughed.

KITTY PRYDE: When we first came together, I had forgotten that we were once all teammates at the same time, except for Bishop. Look at us now, with Laura and Amanda on board we are a complete mishmash. I’m just along for the ride. Also, I agreed to it for Kurt. He is one of my best friends. I wish I could see the look on his face when he sees that Amanda is here participating with us, he is going to be stoked.

FORGE: If I may chime in, mishmash or not, our team has started a winning tradition after my initial failure to defeat Cable thanks to Laura and Bishop. No matter who is with us, we intend to keep that going.

BISHOP: Damn right. 

SAGE: Then let us begin. Uncanny team, Excalibur team, both of your teams have had two straight victories, but one of those streaks is about to end. Amanda, Meggan, please step forward and into the Danger Room.

Both blonde women walked away from their groups and into the Danger Room which immediately transformed into a grassy field.

AMANDA SEFTON: Plenty of open space.

MEGGAN: I like it. Let’s do this.

I was wondering who Meggan was going to go up against. She's like the queen of underrated X-People as she's not as popular as most of the others. Amanda Sefton is a great pick.

I'll have to think on it before I vote.

Another good chapter for this arc, Johnny. I'm guessing this may be part of what Sage was referring to in a previous match. 

As for the match, it just seems like Meggan is almost easily more powerful than Amanda given that Amanda doesn't have the Soulsword. I'm thinking Meggan takes this.
