THE XAVIER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT PART 18

TEAMS AND SET-UP

image.jpeg.18483ab64ce510cbaa21603d2f6b6b77.jpeg

The fight between Paige Guthrie, codenamed Husk, and Jubilation Lee, codenamed Jubilee, went back and forth inside the Danger Room made to look like the Massachusetts Academy they had both attended as members of Generation X. Neither mutant was able to sustain a definitive edge. Paige husked into her granite form to withstand a light flurry of pyrotechnic plasmoids being fired at her from Jubilee. She shielded her face with her arm as she tanked the explosions and moved toward her longtime friend.

HUSK: You better not be holding back at all.

Husk then husked into a diamond form in honor of her former headmistress, Emma Frost, and uppercut Jubilee. The punch sent Jubilee to the ground and cut her lip.

HUSK: Because I will not.

Jubilee wiped the blood off her mouth with a gloved hand.

JUBILEE: Noted.

Husk went back on the offensive but was stopped in her tracks when Jubilee sent an exploding sparkle of bright light directly in her face, temporarily blinding Cannonball’s younger sister. Jubilee tripped up Paige and detonated a colorful explosion in her chest. The blast sent Husk flying and she crash landed in a nearby forested area.  In the viewing area their respective teammates watched critically. On one side stood Emma Frost, Hollow, Chamber, and Monet St. Croix on the other side was Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, and Psylocke. Synch stood between both teams.

WOLVERINE: Don’t let up, kid. You have to make sure she is down for the count!

JUBILEE: I know, I know. I got this.

Jubilee walked over to the area where Paige had landed but did not see her friend. It took a few moments before she had picked up that Paige had fully husked into her wooden form and was blending in with a group of trees. Paige cracked her across the jaw again with a right cross before Jubilee could fully react. Jubilee stumbled backward but put her all into a giant firework explosion to knock Husk back again.

JUBILEE: Cool trick. But now I know you are completely naked now. Do you really want to risk that with everyone watching?

Paige charged at Jubilee while husking into her steel form.

HUSK: Ah Gotta do what ah gotta do to win.

Paige tackled Jubilee to the ground and bent back Jubilee’s arm with her increased strength.

JUBILEE: Get off me!

HUSK: Submit!

JUBILEE: I will not!

Jubilee was able to wriggle free with a knee to Husk’s face. She rolled away and both women stood up slowly.

JUBILEE: Okay this is really starting to hurt, I need to end this.

HUSK: I was thinking the same thing.

Paige husked into her adamantium form as Jubilee charged two rings of plasmoid energy around her fists that quickly grew twice in size. The two mutant heroes charged at one another and disappeared from view of the others in a bright flash of light explosion. When the dust settled both Jubilee and Husk lay sprawled out on the ground seemingly unconscious. Everyone hesitated for a few moments.

ROGUE: They ain’t movin’. I’m afraid the light is on for both of them but no one’s home.

MONET: That is bad news for Paige if she is out cold. It won’t be long before…

SYNCH: I’m on it.

Synch entered into the Danger Room as the environment began to fade away to its normal grays. He quickly covered up Paige’s naked body before she transformed back to her normal human form.

PSYLOCKE: What does this mean?

A hologram of Charles Xavier appeared.

PROFESSOR X: It appears that we have our first tie. I thought this may happen at some point. As a result neither team will receive a point.

Synch lifted up and carried out Paige. Wolverine stepped in to pick up and remove Jubilee. Emma Frost, frustrated that her team would still be at zero points, immediately made her displeasure known.

EMMA FROST: That hardly seems right. Paige didn’t lose.

PROFESSOR X: She didn’t win either.

EMMA FROST: But giving neither team a point would make the point system in this tournament structured in a way that allows for no difference between a tie and a loss. That can’t be right.

PSYLOCKE: I’m not much of a fan of this conclusion either.

Murmurs of support rang up from both teams.

PROFESSOR X: If you can think of a better alternative, I am open to suggestions.

EMMA FROST: Let us not leave here until we can declare an absolute winner between our two teams. Let’s put in substitutions. We both have other members that can step in.

PROFESSOR X: All that already have other matches lined up or have already fought. As you say it, that also wouldn’t be “fair”.

EMMA FROST: What about alternates. I know for a fact that it is allowed. Laura was put in as an alternate against my team in the last round.

PROFESSOR X: That was a unique case and you know it, Emma.

EMMA FROST: Is this not also a unique case? Charles, I’m starting to think there may be a bias against Generation X.

PROFESSOR X: Such a notion is preposterous. I’ll tell you what, though, If Generation X and X-Men Blue can both summon up a new member from the campus that are not already on other teams and has an existing connection to your current team in the next minute I will allow a continuance of this pairing.

ROGUE: The next minute? How in tarnation…

SYNCH: I can step in for the Generation X team.

EMMA FROST: Appreciate the gesture, darling, but it is unnecessary.

Emma was still bitter about Synch’s role in getting Laura on to Kitty Pryde’s team and thus indirectly leading to another loss for Generation X. For the moment at least he was a traitor. Emma briefly closed her eyes as she reached out telepathically to her pick and then reopened them.

EMMA FROST: Done.

Blink teleported in next to the Generation X squad.

EMMA FROST: I present to you the alternate for the Generation X team, Blink. Blink;s original sacrifice was one of the main driving forces for the creation of Generation X. I don’t think you can get a stronger connection than that.

BLINK: Happy to step in and help.

EMMA FROST: Also, she is probably the premier teleporter of all the X people that have walked these halls.

WOLVERINE: I know of a certain blue elf that may have a thing or two to say about that.

EMMA FROST: Your personal fondness for him aside, I firmly believe Blink could more than hold her own against Kurt in any situation.

She turned her attention to Psylocke.

EMMA FROST: Your turn. You’re on the clock.

PSYLOCKE: On it.

Psylocke closed her eyes to reach out to a new recruit telepathically. Logan and Emma’s discussion about teleporters gave her the perfect idea. After a few moments she reopened her eyes.

PSYLOCKE: Done.

Pixie teleported in next to the X-Men Blue team.

PSYLOCKE: I present the X-Men Blue’s alternate, Pixie. All of the original X-Men Blue team members not here are already on other teams but Pixie does share a connection with us having been on multiple missions with Logan, Rogue, and I.

PIXIE: I am so stoked for this opportunity! Thank you so much for thinking of me.

GAMBIT: Happy to hear it. We’re counting on you, petite.

PROFESSOR X: Impressive decision making and recruiting to fit the time limitation, ladies. I deem both of these representatives acceptable and look forward to seeing how they fare against one another. Clarice, your portal generation and displacement field javelins paired with your hand to hand combat training and field leadership experience make you a major force to be reckoned with.  Megan, your hallucinogenic dust, nascent spellcasting, and soul dagger mark you as a mutant with unlimited potential. Is that potential enough to topple a mutant as skilled and experienced as Blink? I can’t wait to see. Are you two ready to step in and finish what Jubilee and Husk started?

BLINK: Yes, sir.

PIXIE: Yes, sir.

PROFESSOR X: Synch, start up the simulation again.

Another good chapter to this arc, Johnny. Emma's petulance is really coming out as her team struggles. :D

As for the match, I'd have to agree that Pixie's powers seem to give her an edge against Blink, despite the latter's experience. Looks like Generation X may get another L here.
