THE XAVIER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT PART 19

TEAMS AND SET-UP

image.jpeg.9cd70bdf8fa5ccecdd7233274213de1c.jpeg

In the medical bay, Shaman attended to Rictor who had suffered lava burns from his fight against Magma. He was currently unconscious as Shaman reached into his interdimensional medicine bag to pull out a variety of herbs and medical ointments. Rictor’s teammates Cable, Shatterstar, Feral, and Warpath looked on as the Alpha Flight healer worked his magic.

SHAMAN: Some of these burns are nasty, but there is nothing to worry about. He will soon make a full recovery and be able to join your team once again.

Shatterstar held Rictor’s hand.

SHATTERSTAR: You fought valiantly out there. It was a great battle between skilled warriors.

The Mojoverse swordsman felt Feral staring a hole in the side of his head.

SHATTERSTAR: Something on your mind?

FERAL: How can you call yourselves warriors after those pathetic performances? Yours against Nightcrawler, and his against Magma. We are supposed to be a team and yet the only one that has pulled their weight so far is Cable.

SHATTERSTAR: Wait a minute now.

FERAL: It’s now up to James and me to pick up your slack.

CABLE: Maria, calm down. They both fought hard, just came up short.

Feral glared at the X-Force leader.

FERAL: You are going to make excuses for them?

WARPATH: We can still put ourselves in a position to win there is no need for us to fight amongst ourselves.

Their heated discussion was interrupted by the entrance of the young X-Man, Elixir, into the med bay.

ELIXIR: Hey, I just wanted to offer my assistance if you wanted it. I know the Professor is trying to keep the kids away from the tournament as much as he can, but I see no danger in offering my abilities in this scenario.

SHAMAN: Sounds good to me, I always welcome the assistance of another healer. Thank you.

ELIXIR: Great. Between the two of us we should have Rictor back at full strength in no time.

SHATTERSTAR: Thanks for coming to help.

ELIXIR: Of course.

FERAL: I need some air.

Feral stormed out of the medical bay.

CABLE: Let her go calm down. She will be fine.

SHAMAN: I understand the spirit of competition, but she might be taking this too far.

CABLE: Maria has always been passionate. I much rather have teammates that care too much than teammates who don’t care at all.

SHAMAN: Understandable.

Another mutant walked into the medical bay, Rahne Sinclaire, Wolfsbane. Elixir, who had already started using his powers on Rictor, suddenly stopped.

ELIXIR: Rahne?!? What are you doing here?

Wolfsbane responded with confusion.

WOLFSBANE: What are you doing here, Josh?

ELIXIR: I… am helping with Rictor’s recovery.

WOLFSBANE: Oh right, of course.

SHATTERSTAR: Why did it suddenly become so awkward here?

WOLFSBANE: Excuse me, I was sent to bring you guys to your next match.

SHAMAN: What? Already?

WOLFSBANE: Yes, you see, it was supposed to be Shaman here taking you to the next match because of who is involved, but he is still treating Julio’s injuries.

SHAMAN: Everyone is so impatient now. I was going to be done soon.

ELIXIR: I can take over and finish up here, if you are needed to keep the tournament going.

SHAMAN: Again, I thank you.

Shaman packed up his medical bag.

WARPATH: Hold on, if it is Feral’s turn then we need to go get her.

WOLFSBANE: It is not her turn.

The realization hit James Proudstar.

WARPATH: Oh, ok then. I am ready to go. Although. it does feel strange with only three members of our team going to the Danger Room. I know only one of us fights at a time, but it still feels off.

WOLFSBANE: Well, if Shaman is freed up to be your guide for this match then I can be a stand in for a teammate if you would like. I did have some wonderful years on X-Force.

Cable moved toward Wolfsbane.

CABLE: I, for one, would be glad to have you by our side. I was so confused when I didn’t see you announced on any of the teams.

WOLFSBANE: I was too, but the Professor has assured me that I have an important role to play.

SHATTERSTAR: For now, that role is to be there for your X-Force teammates.

WOLFSBANE: Gladly.

SHAMAN: If everyone that is leaving will follow me.

The X-Force team of Cable, Shatterstar, Warpath, and Wolfsbane followed Shaman. Wolfsbane briefly turned back to Elixir.

WOLFSBANE: See you around, Josh.

ELIXIR: Yeah, goodbye Rahne.

After they exited, Shatterstar again brought attention to the awkwardness of the exchanges between Wolfsbane and Elixir.

SHATTERSTAR: What was that about?

WARPATH: I could tell you.

Wolfsbane shot a distressed look at Warpath.

WOLFSBANE: How do you know?

WARPATH: Dani told me.

WOLFSBANE: It’s not something I would like to get into right now.

WARPATH: I get it. Shatterstar, sorry, you won’t get anything from me.

The X-Force team arrived at the entrance of the Danger Room to stare off against their opponents for the fourth round, Alpha Flight. The Canadian team of superheroes had just earned their first victory of the tournament in the previous round when the mammoth Sasquatch defeated Beast, Henry McCoy. The two remaining fighters on their team were the speedster and light generator, Northstar, and the daughter of the Goddess of the Northern Lights, Snowbird.

WARPATH: I think I know where this is going.

SNOWBIRD: As do I.

SHAMAN: You are both correct. Narya, descendent and agent of the Inuit gods, and James Proudstar, proud Apache warrior and younger brother of the original Thunderbird, you both have been chosen to represent your respective teams in this round.

Warpath glanced over at Snowbird who had a peculiar look in her eye.

WARPATH: Hoping for someone else.

SNOWBIRD: No. I care not who I face. Admittedly I had let myself think that a rematch with Storm was in my future. She has not yet fought and we have not been paired up against that team. I had allowed myself to get excited at the chance to defeat her this time in a battle of goddesses. But, that was not meant to be.

WARPATH: Yeah, Storm is the best. She is the one who gave me these.

James pulled out his Vibranium daggers.

WARPATH: Sorry to disappoint you that it is me instead.

SNOWBIRD: Don’t misunderstand, mortal. You represent a thrilling challenge all your own. Your Apache shaman abilities are not unlike some of the abilities of the man who raised me.

Snowbird looked over to Shaman before returning her focus to Warpath.

SNOWBIRD: You have superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and durability. You have fought and won against the Demon Bear. I doubt any of my great beastial forms will intimidate you. Know that I don’t take you lightly at all, you are a more than worthy opponent, and I will tap into all of my power to put you down.

James lifted up his daggers.

WARPATH: Likewise.

SHAMAN: Narya, James, step into the Danger Room and may the best fighter win. Fight with the freedom of knowing that I am here to offer my abilities and step in at a moment’s notice so do not restrain yourselves.

WARPATH: Noted.

Warpath and Snowbird entered the Danger Room which transported into a Canadian forest.

Warpath is a strong guy but Snowbird is more than a one trick pony. Big hairy beasts probably isn't the best strategy against James.

I'm liking Snowbird for the win.

I second this take.

Another good set-up for this arc, Johnny. It's pretty interesting that reminders of characters' past histories keep cropping up. :D

As for the match, I'd have to agree that Snowbird's diversity of her powers may be too much for Warpath. Looks like Feral's gonna have more to be mad about. :D
