THE XAVIER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT PART 20

TEAMS AND SET-UP

image.jpeg.b75cc51e3377873e39b1b26d007261ab.jpeg

Both Pixie and Blink darted around the battlefield as they fought each other in Danger Room simulation. The two terrific teleporters showcased their abilities in a stunning display of gamesmanship as each one tried to get a surprise angle on the other for an advantage. Pixie, in particular, was being very aggressive in her teleports around Blink in an effort to get a clean shot, but Blink was always ready and used her portals to escape Pixie’s lunges. In the viewing room, both the Generation X and X-Men Blue teams watched on, impressed by both of the young mutants.

ROGUE: Look at them gals go!

MONET: I would have initially picked Blink to win this easily, however Pixie has grown into her abilities quite nicely.

EMMA FROST: She has always been a willing and eager student.

The two fighters, Jubilee and Husk, who Pixie and Blink had replaced for this fight, had regained consciousness and stood with their respective teams.

HUSK: This is my fault. We shouldn't have to be relying on Blink. I should have gone stronger, earlier, against Jubilee. I let our friendship initially hold me back.

MONET: What’s done is done. There is no use in dwelling on it now.

From several feet away, Jubilee overheard the exchange.

JUBILEE: Those haymakers you were throwing certainly didn’t feel like pulling punches to me!

Back in the Danger Room, Pixie had to abandon her aggressive teleportation strategy as it was proving to be fruitless. She took a more direct approach and went for a frontal assault on Blink with her Souldagger. Blink was able to easily parry Pixie’s attacks, and her superior combat experience quickly put Pixie at a disadvantage. Blink used her transdimensional portal knives to knock away any of Pixie’s potential offense and then kicked the half mutant, half fairy to the ground.

BLINK: You need to come up with a better strategy, quick!

PIXIE: You’re right.

Pixie quickly threw her hallucinogenic dust in Blink’s face. Blink shut and grabbed her eyes.

BLINK: What’s your play here, Megan? Going to show me some teddy bears or unicorns to try and throw me off my game? Scary illusions aren’t really your thing and even if they were, I have seen some messed up things in my time. It’s going to take a lot to shake me.

PIXIE: I know. Which is why I am not going for either of those things.

Blink opened her eyes to see a dozen Pixies staring back at her. They teleported in and out of existence and surrounded Blink.

BLINK: Clever.

Blink fought off the hallucinations of Pixie.

EMMA FROST: Focus! Don’t let the illusions distract you!

It was too late. The real Pixie blasted Blink in the back with a fire spell she had learned from Illyana Rasputin. Blink created a portal on the ground to return to her feet and Pixie was waiting for her.

PIXIE: Mists of Morpheus, Go!

The sleeping spell Megan had learned from Wanda Maximoff put down Blink instantly and the match was over. The simulation of the Generation X Massachusetts Academy faded away.

COMPUTER VOICE: The winner of the match is Pixie. X-Men Blue now has three points. Generation X remains at zero points.

Rogue, Gambit, Psylocke, and Jubilee celebrated the victory. Even Wolverine who was still bitter about his loss to Jamie Maddrox, Multiple Man, allowed a small smirk to appear on his face.

WOLVERINE: Not bad, kid.

Pixie reversed the spell she had cast on Blink and helped her up.Blink slowly exited the Danger Room with her head low in disappointment. She approached the Generation X team.

BLINK: I’m sorry I let you guys down and wasn’t able to secure a win.

EMMA FROST: Don’t blame yourself, you acquitted yourself nicely on such short notice.

MONET: It’s all over for us now, in terms of having a chance to win this thing.

Emma Frost sighed.

EMMA FROST: This is true. Even if you and Jono win your respective matches that will only net us two points and most teams already have three. However, that shouldn’t dismay you, darling. You and Jono are representing yourselves first and foremost and you want everyone to get a good idea of what you can do and how powerful you truly are. I can think of no two better candidates from Generation-X to represent us in this way.

MONET: You’re right.

Monet and Chamber exchanged a knowing glance as they followed Emma Frost, Hollow, and Husk away from the Danger Room.

In between matches for the Generation X team, Emma stayed true to her word to Sean Cassidy and tried to figure out why his daughter Theresa Cassidy, Siryn, had seemingly not been invited to the Xavier Invitational Tournament. She reached out telepathically to some of her former teammates in X-Force, Warpath, Shatterstar, and Feral. Warpath and Shatterstar were equally confused about Siryn’s disappearance and Feral wasn’t in a talkative mood. She was bitter about X-Force’s recent losing streak, but Emma also sensed a hesitation in Maria due to  complicated history with Siryn stemming from the time she once slashed Siryn’s throat in rage which  took away Theresa’s powers for a time. Next, Emma reached out to Cannonball, Sam Guthrie, who had once been Siryn’s leader on X-Force, and he too had no insight and hadn’t seen Theresa in awhile. Finally, Emma tried the father of Theresa’s child, Jamie Maddrox, Multiple Man. He confirmed that they had been on better terms as of late after he accidentally absorbed their child. However, he also had not had contact with her recently and couldn’t help but feel some guilt about her not being around in this mutant gathering.

As the third match of the fourth round was starting between Snowbird of Alpha Flight and Warpath of X-Force, Emma returned her attention to her team. Husk was in a sullen mood after her tie with Jubilee had led to another loss and Hollow was silent as always.

MONET: I assume they would want to give the Excalibur team as much time between matches as possible since they have two this round. We have already gone against them, so logically speaking we should be next.

EMMA FROST: Agreed. The only other teams that have yet to compete this round are Charles’s Original Five and X-Factor,  which would leave Scott, Bobby, Alex, and Pietro as potential opponents for you or Jono.

MONET: The pairing is obvious, well I guess I should say it’s obvious which one of us is going to fight this round.

Chamber joined the conversation telepathically.

CHAMBER: I’m going up against one of the Summers boys.

EMMA FROST: Glad to see we’re all on the same page about this. They are the only two potential matches that make sense.

MONET: You’ve been pretty close with Cyclops over the years. Any tips you can give to Chamber to give him a potential advantage?

EMMA FROST: Not in a fight like this. The good news is, regardless if it is Cyclops or Havok, Jono won’t have to worry about holding back. Those boys can take it. They can also dish it out so Jono you need to be mentally ready for that.

Chamber nodded. At that moment the Generation X team was joined by Sage. Emma smirked.

EMMA FROST: Why Sage, darling, have you taken a particular interest in our team? It always seems to be you that is involved in our matches. Or perhaps you have a particular interest in me? It’s like the Hellfire Club all over again, is that it, Tessa?

SAGE: Glad to see your mounting losses haven't tampered your sardonic wit. If you got that out of your system you can follow me to the Danger Room. The fourth round matchup awaits.

Chamber, Monet, Hollow, and Husk walked back to the Danger Room. Sage slowed her stride and grabbed Emma’s arm.

EMMA FROST: No need for chastising, I was only poking fun.

SAGE: That’s not why I stopped you. I know you have been active on the telepathic phone lines asking about Theresa Cassidy.

EMMA FROST: I told Sean I would. Is that against the rules too?

SAGE: No. I just wanted to let you know that it is a mystery to all of us. When Charles had me put together the teams and matches, I asked him why she was not on the roster. He told me she was unavailable, not even to assist with the tournament preparations.

Emma lifted an eyebrow.

EMMA FROST: We both know Charles likes to keep his secrets.

SAGE: Here is hoping this particular secret will be revealed soon

Emma and Sage caught up with the others and arrived at the Danger Room where they were greeted by the X-Factor team of Havok, Polaris, Strong Guy, Quicksilver, and Multiple Man. Alex Summers was getting ready to fight. His team had also narrowed down the possibilities and figured out a showdown with Chamber was inevitable.

POLARIS: Ok, Alex, it’s time. It’s up to you and Pietro to win your matches for us to have a shot.

QUICKSILVER: There is nothing to worry about, he has this.

Jamie Maddrox immediately approached Emma.

MULTIPLE MAN: Were you able to find out anything about Theresa and why she isn’t here.

EMMA FROST: Not yet.

HAVOK: Let’s get this thing started.

SAGE: OK. I believe everyone here understands what is about to happen. An explosive match between a pair of mutants whose bodies can barely contain their power. Whoever can best focus that overwhelming flow of energy on their opponent will emerge victorious.Alex Summers, Jonothan Starsmore, it is your time to shine brightly.

Havok and Chamber stepped to the entrance of the Danger Room and exchanged a nod of respect. As they entered the Danger Room, it transformed into the inside of a starship.

STRONG GUY: Win or lose, I am looking forward to this.

Another good chapter to your current arc, Johnny. The mystery surrounding Siryn continues.

As for the match, having not read any comics with Chamber, it's hard for me to get a read on his actual power levels and especially if he has any weaknesses that can keep him down without killing him. If I had to guess, his weakness would be if his psionic powers were somehow contained or weakened. That being the case, I guess Alex can absorb enough of Chamber's energy to incapacitate the latter?

Man, if I didn't vote on this late last night, this would've ended in a tie.

I guess the community still needs an occasional reminder that we should do better than this.
