THE XAVIER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT PART 23

TEAMS AND SET-UP

image.jpeg.4887df87a46ff80144adb5dae7aadb24.jpeg

During their match in the Danger Room, Havok and Chamber unloaded on one another with almost reckless abandon. Jono fired psionic biokinetic flames from his chest at Alex and the longtime X-Factor leader responded with plasma blasts of energy from the ambient cosmic energy stored in his body. The explosive encounter had both of their teams, Generation X and X-Factor respectively, slightly concerned that the two mutants may blow up the entire Danger Room in an effort  to one up each other.

HUSK: At one point should someone step in?

EMMA FROST: They are fine, darling. Probably don’t get to let loose like this in a training session very often so we should allow them their fun.

POLARIS: I don’t like this. The explosions are getting larger and larger.

STRONG GUY: Nah, don’t worry about it. Alex has this completely under control.

Guido was proven correct in a short amount of time. Like a candle shining too brightly, the fight burned out quickly as Havok proved his superiority and overwhelmed Chamber with his power, blasting the young mutant back several yards and on to the ground, unable to recover.

MONET: I guess it’s a good thing that Jono doesn’t have much of a face to damage. That looked brutal.

COMPUTER VOICE: The victory goes to Havok. That is one point for X-Factor which now has a total of 2 points. Generation X remains at 0 points.

Sage, who was the acting host for this contest between Generation X and X-Factor, quickly took action.

SAGE: I will bring in one of our medics to tend to Chamber.

Havok exited the Danger Room and celebrated with his team of Polaris, Strong Guy, Multiple Man, and Quicksilver. The Generation-X team was in slight disbelief.

HUSK: I swear Longshot put a hex on us or something. Can he do that?

MONET: No. Well not that I am aware of. He never showed that ability when we were teammates.

EMMA FROST: Monet is correct. Longshot can sap luck from others to add to his own, but hexes are not in his wheelhouse.

HUSK:  Well, someone cursed us, I am sure of it. No way our luck is this bad.

EMMA FROST: We may not have had the best luck of the draw, but we own our performances or lack thereof. We have been consistently beaten at every opportunity. As leader the blame is really on me. I have not given you all my best and I know why.

The Generation X team of Monet, Hollow, and Husk left the Danger Room viewing area and entered the Danger Room itself where Chamber was being tended to by Elixir. Emma Frost did not follow them and started to leave in a different direction.

HUSK: Where are you going?

EMMA FROST: It is clear to me that my presence is not helping our team in any tangible way. It is also clear that something bigger than a simple tournament is going on and I plan to find out what.

HUSK: So, you are just going to abandon us?

EMMA FROST: More like set you free. Monet definitely doesn’t need me to boost her confidence. If you are feeling superstitious about the number of teammates, you can reach out to Everett. He has been wanting to get back in our good graces ever since the bringing X-23 into the tournament incident. In fact, I don’t think it is crazy to say that Monet would probably prefer his company over mine leading up to her match.

Monet did not immediately respond.

EMMA FROST: As for me, I have a mystery to unravel.

Emma Frost left her former students in shock and confusion.

MONET: Is she trying to distract me before my fight?

HUSK: Don’t worry about it. We are here. We’ll get Everett and we will finish strong. No reason to let the disappointment we feel now carryover. I have faith in you against anyone here.

Hollow nodded in agreement and Monet smiled. Emma walked through the halls of the mansion until she could find an area that was empty of students and other mutants.

EMMA FROST: Charles, I know you are listening, we need to talk. Now!

She did not have to wait long for a response.

XAVIER: I have shielded this conversation from the other telepaths. I know what you’re going to ask, Emma.

EMMA FROST: Well, I’m going to say it anyway. What is going on with Theresa Cassidy? Why isn’t she here? Why is she unavailable?

XAVIER: All will be explained in due time. Soon.

EMMA FROST: Soon needs to be now. What is this tournament really about? I have been thinking about it ever since my conversation with Sean. Theresa isn’t the only mutant curiously missing from this event.

XAVIER: No, she is not. In fact, there is one big obvious one that will be tough to avoid soon enough. Everything happening here is for a reason. Know that my intentions are good and all of this is necessary.

EMMA FROST: The intentions usually are, Charles, it’s the execution that is sometimes questionable.

XAVIER: This is a conversation we should continue in person. There is also something I want to ask of you specifically.

Later on, the New Mutants team of Magma, Magik, and Cannonball watched the match between Cyclops and Cerise intently on the big screens. Their teammates, Sunspot and Danielle Moonstar sat at a table a short distance away.

DANI MOONSTAR: Are you okay? You don’t look great.

SUNSPOT: I’m fine.

DANI MOONSTAR: Berto, are you really going to make me dig in that brain of yours for an answer or are you going to just tell me.

SUNSPOT: That threat is so not cool.

Roberto Da Costa looked left and right before looking back at Dani.

SUNSPOT: I can feel him. It is crazy to even say out loud, but I can feel him.

DANI MOONSTAR: Who?

SUNSPOT: Reignfire.

Danielle reacted with unease and confusion at the sound of the name of the one-time leader of the Mutant Liberation Front, and sadistic clone of her good friend, Roberto.

SUNSPOT: I told you, it sounds crazy right. It’s very faint, but it is something I haven’t felt in a long time.

DANI MOONSTAR: Berto, that’s not possible. Reignfire is…

SUNSPOT: Dead I know. That’s why I am so confused. Do you think it’s possible with all the psychic energy around here that it is messing with my mind a little bit and causing me to have this feeling?

DANI MOONSTAR: With all the telepaths around here right now, I would think anything could be possible…

Their conversation was interrupted by the screams of joy from their teammates at the sight of Cyclops emerging victorious in his match.

MAGIK: Scott pulled it off! I knew he would!

CANNONBALL: Well I’ll be, we can really win this thing!

Cannonball, Magik, along with Magma joined their other two teammates at their table.

MAGIK: Scott won and more importantly Excalibur lost. That means we are in a three way tie with them and X-Men Blue for first place.

CANNONBALL: All we need now is my man Berto to take us home with a victory and we are guaranteed at least a tie at the top.

Amara, Roberto’s on again off again paramour, placed a hand on his knee.

MAGMA: We are all counting you. No pressure. You got this.

SUNSPOT: I try not to disappoint.

The original leader of the New Mutants and one of the primary facilitators of the tournament, Karma, called out to her teammates from the doorway.

KARMA: Last time up, are you guys ready?

MAGIK: Let’s do this.

Sam clasped his friend Roberto’s shoulder.

CANNONBALL: Let’s get this last win, man.

Roberto stood up to follow his team to the Danger Room. Dani was more hesitant.

DANI MOONSTAR: Berto, is there something you want to tell everyone before we go?

Roberto shook his head no.

SUNSPOT: Nah, I’m sure it was my imagination. Can’t let it distract me from this.

Danielle appeared less than convinced but did not press her friend further. She stood up  and followed the rest of her team to the Danger Room. Waiting for them at the entrance was the Generation X team of Monet St. Croix, Hollow, Husk, a recovered via Elixir, Chamber, and Everett Thomas, Synch.

CANNONBALL: I figured our paths would cross at some point before this was over.

HUSK: It seems only fitting, brother.

MAGIK: Where is Emma?

MONET: At this moment, your guess is as good as mine.

MAGMA: It’s good to see you, Everett.

SYNCH: Happy to be here to support Generation-X.

KARMA: Let’s not delay this any further. Sunspot, M, you are the final competitors for your respective teams. You were paired up together for a variety of reasons. Beginning with the fact that you both come from very wealthy backgrounds.

HUSK: And are shockingly not COMPLETE jerks.

KARMA: You both also have less than upstanding citizens in your immediate family. Lastly there are your powers. Monet everyone knows you are super strong, super smart, super durable, have telepathy, and can fly. The spoiled rich girl platter of powers. Am I missing anything?

HUSK: Her red diamond skin and razor claws in her Penance form and I’m pretty sure I saw her use telekinesis the other day.

KARMA: Perfect. On the other side there is Berto. He can also fly and his solar absorption adding to his strength means he can go blow for blow with Monet and then some. His thermokinesis and energy blasts give him a long distance advantage over Monet but he is significantly less durable.

SUNSPOT: Thank you I think we are all aware of that.

MAGMA: Yet, we have to remind you all the time.

KARMA: Roberto, Monet, the two super strong rich kids turned heroes from troubled homes, the time for you to shine is now. Please step to the Danger Room entrance.

The two heroes obliged and entered the Danger Room which transformed into a burning city block.

I always liked Sunspot but I also liked M for different reasons (it would never work though).

I think M wins. She seems like she can take what Sunspot gives out.

Hopefully I can comment on this before it wraps ...

Another good Xavier Invitation match, Johnny. Looks like we may be getting closer to resolving some things.

As for the match, it looks like the only real advantage Roberto may have here is physical strength, but Monet's relative invulnerability probably renders that moot. Add in Monet's various other powers and she should probably have this.
