THE XAVIER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT PART 24

TEAMS AND SET-UP

image.jpeg.7b96494b4b38897c4dee0c520e4817a1.jpeg

After feeling doubt following the losses of Strong Guy and Polaris in the early rounds of the tournament, the X-Factor team now had a renewed sense of vigor and purpose following Multiple Man’s defeat of Wolverine and Havok’ overpowering Chamber. The five members of the team, Havok, Polaris, Multiple Man, Quicksilver, and Strong Guy conversed just outside of the view of the big screen TVs where the fight between Monet of Generation X and Sunspot from the New Mutants was being broadcast.

HAVOK: It is a little crazy, but currently the only teams that have no shot of at least tying for first after the final round are Generation X and X-Force. All the other teams are in play, including us.

POLARIS: I wonder what will happen in case of a tie. Perhaps some sort of battle royale.

STRONG GUY: If things work out in a certain way that would include a lot of teams. There would be bodies everywhere. Heh. Sounds like a fun time.

HAVOK: Before we get into any of that we have to win our final match. And that’s on you, Pietro.

QUICKSILVER: Not a problem. It’s undeniable now that I am going to be facing Northstar. I have the experience edge. He was on his little Canadian hero team, meanwhile I have been on the Brotherhood, The X-Men, the Avengers!

HAVOK: You should be confident, but not overconfident. They wouldn’t have selected Northstar as a leader of young mutant minds at this school for no reason.

Pietro was dismissive of Alex’s words.

QUICKSILVER: What is the saying? Those who can’t do, teach.

POLARIS: He has been chosen as a leader multiple times, he is very capable.

QUICKSILVER: Whatever. The fact remains that I am better and I will prove it.

Out in the courtyard, the Alpha Flight team of Guardian, Vindicator, Snowbird, Sasquatch, and Northstar also sat in eager anticipation for the showdown between the speedsters.

GUARDIAN: Thanks to Sasquatch and Snowbird we are back in this thing. I couldn’t be more proud. I feel there has always been a sense of condescension emanating from the X-Men toward Alpha Flight. But look at us now, neck and neck, with some of their most vaunted teams over the years.

SASQUATCH: Are you finally admitting that you are enjoying this training tournament and see value in it?

GUARDIAN: I guess I am. Even if that value might be tied to rubbing it in Logan’s face.

SNOWBIRD: Sounds like something Eugene would say.

GUARDIAN: He would have really loved this.

Heather Hudson, Vindicator, took notice of Northstar’s distant expression. She approached him with concern.

VINDICATOR: You have been so quiet since Snowbird’s victory. Are you trying to remain focused?

NORTHSTAR: No. Maybe I should be. But I’m not.

VINDICATOR: You’re thinking about Jeanne-Marie.

NORTHSTAR: Oui. I just can’t wrap my head around why she is not here.

VINDICATOR: It doesn’t make sense.

NORTHSTAR: At all. I know we are not always together, and we have been on separate teams at separate times, but I still am confused as to why she is not here at all. At first I thought it was because of the five-person team limit, but then…

VINDICATOR: Shaman stepped down and I was inserted.

NORTHSTAR: Exactly, and I mean no offense. I am thrilled to have you on the team. I just don’t understand why it wouldn’t be her.

VINDICATOR: I wish I could give you an answer.

NORTHSTAR: Given the fact that my sister isn’t on this team or any other team, I thought at least she would have been brought in to help run the tournament like so many other mutants here that are not on one of the ten squads. But, there has been no sight of her.

VINDICATOR: Is it possible they have been hiding her for a big reveal as the host for your match against Quicksilver?

NORTHSTAR: I appreciate the optimism, but I have serious doubts that they would go through all that trouble just for me.

VINDICATOR: It would help if we had a telepath on the team that could locate her in the area, but alas.

NORTHSTAR: We still share a deep connection. I can assure you she is not here.

VINDICATOR: Surely someone here has an answer, and it might not necessarily be because of something bad.

NORTHSTAR: Thinking about it, there was another thought that occurred to me. Pietro Maximoff and I do share a connection. But it is not the one everyone is thinking about. We both have sisters that we are close to that are often shunned in a supposedly inclusive mutant community because of some mental health challenges that are not their fault. Jeanne-Marie is not here for the same reason Wanda isn’t here.

VINDICATOR: I don’t think that is it at all. Let’s talk to Charles Xavier.

NORTHSTAR: We can, after this is done. I’m not going to derail the team over my personal feelings.

Heather placed her right hand on Northstar’s shoulder.

VINDICATOR: It is your choice, but never think that you have to completely subjugate yourself and your feelings for the team.

A small smile appeared on Heather’s face.

VINDICATOR: Especially not for an ego driven training exercise.

NORTHSTAR: I think you know me well enough to know there is no danger of that.

Dr. Walter Langowski, Sasquatch, walked over to the two Alpha Flight veterans.

SASQUATCH: Dr. Cecilia Reyes is here to bring us to the final match. It’s our time. More to the point, Jean-Paul, it’s your time. Are you ready?

NORTHSTAR: Absolutely.

They joined the other members of their team and followed Cecilia Reyes to the entrance of the Danger Room. As expected the X-Factor team stood in opposition to them for the final pairing. Strong Guy enthusiastically greeted Sasquatch as Havok and Guardian shook hands. Quicksilver and Northstar exchanged knowing nods.

CECILIA REYES: Welcome to the final match for your respective teams. Currently you both stand at 2 wins and 2 losses, with both of your teams winning two in a row after losing the first two matches. Quicksilver, Northstar, one of you will make it three. You must not only use your speed, but your cunning as well to overcome the other. Who will emerge victorious? We are all eager to see. If you will both please step forward.

Pietro and Jean-Paul walked through the entrance and into the Danger Room which transformed into an abandoned racetrack.

Had to do some researching to make sure I don’t misspeak but apparently according to Marvel Lore Northstar’s feat of moving at 99% the speed of light makes him a fair bit faster then Quicksilver. That plus the greater mobility he get’s from flying and better striking feats (being able to hurt the Hulk) make me vote for Jean-Paul.

When I was looking into them for this match what I found was that although Northstar can go faster than Quicksilver, his body can't handle going at those speeds, so he doesn't do it.

Another good chapter to the Xavier Invitational Tournament, Johnny. The plot seems to just keep thickening with all the mutants conspicuously absent.

As for the match, I'm inclined to give this one to Quicksilver. Northstar may be capable of going at near light-speed and have his concussive blasts, but as mentioned, he himself said that he doesn't think his body can handle going at such speeds. Meanwhile, I think Pietro has better speed and durability feats on average, as well as can does more with his superspeed. I think he might take Jean-Paul in this one and give X-Force the lead in the tourney.
