THE PLAY FOR POWER PART 1

A Spinoff for the Xavier Invitational Tournament detailed here

image.jpeg.e86efdfa650a3ad496dcc0ff6a9ebb53.jpeg

Juggernaut, Nocturne, Black Tom Cassidy, Siryn, and Marrow all sat on adjacent benches in a large empty room surrounded by adamantium walls. It resembled something like a prison.

NOCTURNE: I have a bit of a bad feeling about this.

JUGGERNAUT: There is nothing to worry about. There is nothing they can throw at us that I can’t smash into dust.

BLACK TOM CASSIDY: Tis true. We may not have seen all that we are up against yet, but ye not be concerned, I’d pick our lot against any of ‘em.

MARROW: I just hope we can pick up some good information for the X-Men to make all this worthwhile.

SIRYN: Agreed.

BLACK TOM CASSIDY: I am still in a wee bit o' shock that you wanted to come along for this mission with us longtime criminals.

NOCTURNE: Hey, I am a good guy here too.

SIRYN: Aye, and I wouldna missed this for the world. I am so curious.

MARROW: Hopefully, that curiosity doesn't get us all killed.

A large LED screen on the northern wall came to life. A shadowy figure with glowing red eyes appeared on the screen.

GAMEMASTER: Greetings everyone. Welcome to an exclusive fighting tournament where the name of the game is power. Everyone gathered here is seeking some elusive power, a power that I can provide, but only if you earn it. And you earn it by beating the person in front of you, by any means necessary. You are in teams of five and there are 12 teams in total. I want you all to take a look and see what you are up against.

The screen displayed a large graphic. It was a list of all of the respective teams competing in the tournament and each teams' members.

Acolytes - Exodus, Amelia Voght, Frenzy, Rusty Collins, Skids

Hellfire Club - Sebastian Shaw, Sat Yr-9, Harry Leland, Azazel, Jason Wyngarde

Juggernaut’s Team - Juggernaut, Nocturne, Black Tom Cassidy, Siryn, Marrow

Marauders - Mr. Sinister, Chimera, Lady Mastermind, Arclight, Scalphunter

Mccoy’s Brotherhood - Dark Beast, Mesmero, Omega Red, Unus the Untouchable, Aurora

Mystique’s Brotherhood - Mystique, Sabertooth, Martinique Jason, Blob, Silver Samurai

Mutant Liberation Front - Stryfe, Reignfire, Fenris, Tempo, Dragoness

OZT- Bastion, Nimrod, Mastermold, Omega Sentinel, Donald Pierce

Savage Land: Zaladane, Sauron, Lorelai, Vertigo, Shanna the She-Devil

Sisterhood of Mutants - Madelyn Pryor, Lady Deathstrike, Spiral, Typhoid Mary, Amora

Toad’s Brotherhood - Toad, Pyro, Avalanche, Phantazia, Masque

Upstarts - Selene, Trevor Fitzroy, Fabian Cortez, Shinobi Shaw, Siena Blaze

GAMEMASTER: As you can see, there are very powerful mutants, androids, and magical beings here to compete for the top prize. If you want your ultimate power you are going to have to step over the other teams to obtain it. The road will be tough, but the reward will be worth it. A few particulars so that everyone understands the way the game is played. Every member of every team will be paired against a member of another team. No two members of a team can face opponents from the same team. A victory is decided when one of the competitors can no longer fight, whether that is because they have been incapacitated or terminated, I leave up to you. At the end the team with the most victories will win the grand prize. In an event of a tie at the conclusion of this game, a battle royale will be held between teams with the same amount of wins. Is everything clear? To further expand on this event I would like to present two of my associates who have helped put this all together; my broadcast partner, Mojo, and stage designer, Arcade.

The visages of Mojo and Arcade appeared on the viewing screens.

MOJO:  I am so excited to get this show up and running. I have been promoting it for months and the buzz has been insane. It promises to produce just the kind of turnaround my network needs right now. I heard the Gamemaster say that you can choose how to end the fight, do me a favor and choose death. Bloodshed is always a ratings attraction.

GAMEMASTER: I would be remiss not to remind you all that you chose to be here. There is no turning back now and if you choose not to engage fully in the fight there are other ways to entertain the masses.

ARCADE: I have created several variations of my Murderworld for the fighting stages. I am begging one of you to try and not participate so that I can test out some of my new toys.

GAMEMASTER: Let’s get this ball rolling, once the matches get up and going I think everyone will truly understand what they are in for. Let us start with a couple of Omegas, Red and Sentinel. Let’s see who can emerge a winner and whose stay here may prove to be very short.

Dark Beast, Omega Red, Aurora, Mesmero, and Unus the Untouchable watched the presentation in a silver adamantium room very similar to the one occupied by Juggernaut’s team. Hank McCoy rubbed his chin as he looked over the teams.

DARK BEAST:  Juggernaut’s team appears to be the only other team like ours made up of team members who were not previously affiliated on the same team. Very curious.

UNUS THE UNTOUCHABLE: I don’t ever remember seeing Bastion, Nimrod, and Master Mold at the same time so that’s different. Anyway, we can’t dwell on it now.

MESMERO: Omega Red you are the first, you will set the tone not only for the team but for the event itself.

OMEGA RED: Da! I will crush that female sentinel with my carbonadium coils!

The door in front of their room lifted upward and Omega Red walked through. In a silver room much larger than either Juggernaut’s or the Dark Beast’s  due to the need for space of its inhabitants, the robotic squadron of Bastion, Nimrod, Mastermold, Donald Pierce, and Karmina Shapandar watched the intro for the tournament intently.

BASTION: The choice to participate in this tournament may have been a folly.

MASTERMOLD: No, we can be granted a way to eliminate the mutant threat once and for all with a victory.

OMEGA SENTINEL: We will also get to capture or remove several mutant threats along the way.

NIMROD: The odds of this being beneficial greatly outnumber the odds of it being a permanent risk to any of us.

BASTION: The fact that this mysterious gamemaster was able to gather this many powerful mutants together, much less find a way to bring in the three of us at the same time, is quite the display of his potential power and reach.

DONALD PIERCE: I am just curious about which disgusting mutant head I will get to cave in

OMEGA SENTINEL: You will have to wait your turn, Pierce. I was chosen first!

The adamantium door in front of Karima opened upward and she walked through with confidence to her showdown with Omega Red.

(Note: I am going with this version of Karima. I am currently unable to add the picture to her profile.)

While doing the first Xavier Invitational Tournament, I had two ideas on a follow up, this one and the next generation version (starting here). Putting up one of each with the breakdown of teams to see if people would have a preference on which one to go forward with for now.

Ah, here's the other wrinkle in the arc. :) Good set up, @JohnnyChany. Gamemaster and Mojo are a couple of the relatively few entities that could round up these many and powerful characters.

I noticed one possible error in the match, though: you have Sebastian Shaw on both the Hellfire Club and the Upstarts team. I'm guessing you meant to have his son Shinobi with the Upstarts instead, right?

Anyways, as for the match, it looks like Karima might be a little bit too much for Omega Red to handle with her various Sentinel enhancements. Funny that I think I've only just now heard of her.

I admittedly don’t know much about Karim so I’ll have to look her up. I am leaning Omega Red though mostly cause his death spores are a pretty op power set.

Looking at Karima's powers, I'm not sure how much Arkady's death spores would affect her. She's been modified as a Sentinel a couple of times, so she may not be organic enough for the spores to do too much. Also, Karima's body has some self-repairing nanotechnology.

Not to mention that she's physically much stronger than Omega Red and has a built-in small arsenal.

That is correct and now has been fixed, thanks.
