THE SECOND XAVIER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT PART 1

image.thumb.jpeg.92b8c017a97c3be485d1eeade86c5d08.jpeg

At the conclusion of the final round, Charles Xavier’s Invitational Tournament had ended in a tie between the Original Five, the New Mutants, the International X-Men, Excalibur, X-Men Blue, and X-Factor. All six teams had ended up with three points representing three winners. As discussion ramped up among the six teams about what was next and how they would decide a winner, Emma Frost, from one of the losing teams, Generation X, gathered several of the mutants who had helped Xavier and Magneto run the tournament for a different and seemingly more important discussion.

Emma sat at a table with Sage, Cypher, Karma, Shaman, Lifeguard, Dazzler, Longshot, and Wolfsbane.

EMMA FROST: I’m not sure who at this table is aware of what is really going on here, but I have recently been enlightened that this tournament was not just for training, but a very specific type of training because of a mysterious tournament being held with various villains that very well may be life or death. Magneto and Charles want the X-Men and mutants everywhere to be prepared should they be sucked into this thing.

SAGE: I, too, was recently told about the real reason we have put this together. I had my suspicions and the reality was not too different from my assumptions but it is still astounding.

EMMA FROST: Xavier and Magneto have charged Sage and I to put together another tournament so that more mutants can be prepared.

SAGE: Specifically the young X-Men at this school. He originally wanted to shield them from this but Magneto successfully convinced them that not exposing them to this type of event may be hindering their ability to survive a life or death tournament should they be dragged in.

EMMA FROST: There are not enough of them here now to hold a proper tournament. We will need to bring in more mutants from the outside which will help accomplish both Xavier and Magneto’s objectives.

SAGE: We need more teams.

LONGSHOT: Was this what you were referring to when you talked Dazzler and I into stepping down from our previous team?

SAGE: Not exactly. I had no intention of having Dazzler step down initially. That was partly driven by the appearance of Amanda Sefton. However, once it became a possibility I did incorporate it into my plan that if I needed to create a team of my own I could do it with two of my New Excalibur teammates.

DAZZLER: Who did you have in mind for the other two slots in our team?

SAGE: Pete Wisdom, and as for the other, although he was not on Excalibur with us at the same time, he was with Pete Wisdom, has a long connection to him, and is already here: Micromax, Scott Wright.

EMMA FROST: That is one team. The Hellions squad that attends school here, Rockslide, Mercury, Hellion, and Dust will make another team. I initially had trouble with a fifth member with Wither not around. Despite my history with the name, I can’t run this tournament and lead them. I  have also already participated and this is about getting in as much new blood in as possible. Then the perfect answer hit me.

CYPHER: The Stepford Cuckoos?

Emma smiled.

EMMA FROST: Douglas, you always were one of the smartest of your class.

WOLFSBANE: Thinking about it, how would you break up the remaining students strong enough to fight? There doesn’t seem to be an even number.

EMMA FROST: Simple darling, the young X-Men team will be comprised of Surge, Loa, Gentle, Anole, and Bling.

WOLFSBANE: What about Armor?

EMMA FROST: Given her time working with Abigail Brand, I think Armor could bring in a team that adds a much needed different dimension to the proceedings.

SAGE: We are working out the details on that one as we speak.

SHAMAN: There are several members of Alpha Flight that were disappointed that they weren’t invited the first time around. I could reach out to four of them and have a new Alpha Flight team ready to go.

EMMA FROST: Splendid, darling.

KARMA: I was once the leader of the New Mutants, but they are already spoken for, most of them at least. However, there was the time where I was in a group of mutants defending Utopia. We bonded in a very unique way. None of them have participated thus far, and Elixir and Tabitha Smith are already here.

EMMA FROST: That will work.

Cypher looked over to Wolfsbane.

CYPHER: You and I were on the X-Force Strike Team. I think we could bring in three of our teammates who weren’t in the original groups.

WOLFSBANE: Ooh, that’s exciting.

SAGE: That brings us to seven teams.

EMMA FROST: The eighth team is one requested by Magneto himself. He insisted that one of the spots goes to a team of Genoshan residents, more to the point, Callisto, Wicked, Freakshow, Shola Inkose and Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

LIFEGUARD: I’ve noticed that I am the only one here not on a team yet. I don’t think there are enough of us who haven’t already competed to form an XSE team, so that would leave what? An X-Corp team?

EMMA FROST: Yes.

LIFEGUARD: Cool. Who from the various branches will be on the team?

EMMA FROST: It will be led by Trinary, and include yourself, Sabra, Neal Shaara, and Risque.

LIFEGUARD: Nice.

EMMA FROST: The final team is another bit of a wildcard. The New Warriors team may have closer ties to the Avengers than the X-Men, but the team has had many mutants on its roster. One of which is a staff member at this school. Angelica Jones, Firestar, has already reached out to a select few of her former teammates at my behest and they have agreed to participate. That is all ten teams.

Dazzler noticed Lifeguard's expression change from contentment to contemplation and a bit of sadness.

DAZZLER: What’s wrong Heather?

LIFEGUARD: Oh, nothing. I just wish Darkstar could have been put on my team. I really liked her. Although there isn’t anyone else on my team I would kick off so it’s just a little disappointing.

CYPHER: It’s a shame she can’t lead an official Winter Guard team for the tournament. If we are all at risk of being dragged into this thing, then they have just as much incentive to train for it as the rest of us.

EMMA FROST: This is true. Unfortunately, that would make an odd number of teams and unbalance the structure of the tournament.

SAGE: I believe I have a solution for that. When I was putting the first tournament together for Charles and Magneto I was approached by Darwin, who had the admittedly brilliant suggestion of forming a team of former X-Men from long ago forgotten to time. The only members in person would be himself and Mimic. Their three teammates, Thunderbird, Petra, and Vulcan would be simulated by the Danger Room. I didn’t have a spot for them then, but it appears we do now and I can’t think of any better training for some of these younger X-Men than a chance to go against some of the old guard.

EMMA FROST: Vulcan?!? Intriguing. Let’s do it. Then it’s settled. We will have an even bigger tournament than the first. 12 teams.

After a little more conversation, the roster for each of the 12 teams was nailed down and Emma Frost tasked Blink with the responsibility of bringing in each member who was not already at the school or in route. She handed the roster sheets to Sage and Cypher who were tasked with creating all the matchups for the tournament and submitting their proposal to Emma for her approval to prevent the appearance of either one trying to give their own team an advantage.

Alpha Flight: Shaman, Marrina Smallwood, Puck, Persuasion, Wild Child

Forgotten: Darwin, Mimic, Vulcan, Petra, Thunderbird

Genoshans: Callisto, Wicked, Freakshow, Shola Inkose, Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Hellions: Stepford Cuckoos, Hellion, Rockslide, Dust, Mercury

New Excalibur:  Pete Wisdom, Sage, Micromax, Dazzler, Longshot

New Warriors: Namorita, Stacy X, Firestar, Silhouette, Water Snake

Space: Abigail Brand, Armor, Ch’od, Hepzibah, Warbird

Utopians: Karma, Tabitha Smith, Box, Elixir, Random

Winter Guard: Darkstar, Starlight, Ursa Major, Red Guardian, Crimson Dynamo

X-Corp: Trinary, Lifeguard, Neal Shaara, Sabra, Risque

X-Force Strike Team: Fantomex, Deadpool, Wolfsbane, Caliban, Cypher

Young X-Men: Surge, Anole, Gentle, Bling, Loa

After several hours, it was all put together and they were ready to begin. Emma Frost began the tournament in earnest and in person as she personally brought to the Danger Room the first two teams to compete, the Utopians and the Space team.

EMMA FROST: No tricks, no misleading theatrics. This is a competition to determine what teams will head to face off against this looming threat joining the X-Men members already selected. The goal is not to kill your opponents but it is to incapacitate the,. We have the best healing mutants on hand so don’t worry about holding back. Hisako Ichiki, you are a big reason we are having this second tournament. We will determine if you and your generation are ready for the big leagues. You face a most formidable test today in the form of Madison Jeffries, Box. It is time to see what we are all made of.

Hisako and Madsion stepped forward from their respective teams and entered the Danger Room.

While doing the first Xavier Invitational Tournament, I had two ideas on a follow up, this one and the villain version (starting here). Putting up one of each with the breakdown of teams to see if people would have a preference on which one to go forward with for now.

Armor's armor will be hard to get though but I think Box might have soemthing to kind of get around it. He ain't no Tony Stark but still. He should have some options to try.

Another good Xavier Invitationals chapter, Johnny. This one feels more like set-up towards the rest of the arc, though.

As for the match, Box just might have the edge here. He could possibly invent something to get through or counter Armor's exoskeleton, but in the heat of battle, that may be tough to do. Instead, his own armor may be tough enough to slug it out with Hisako until her exoskeleton wears off, then he could knock her out.
