THE PLAY FOR POWER PART 2

Teams and Set-up

Mystique paced around her team’s holding room. She had written down the names of all the other teams and their members after the Gamemaster had flashed them on the LED screen. She sized up the rosters of the opposing teams trying to discern who would be the biggest obstacle to her own team coming out on top. She paused and snickered when she reached Toad’s Brotherhood Team consisting of himself, Avalanche, Pyro, Masque, and Phantazia. She was in slight disbelief that so many of her former Brotherhood teammates would willingly follow that fool again. She looked up from her paper at her own team, Sabretooth, Silver Samurai, Martinique Jason, and Blob. All of them had been past members of the Brotherhood under her leadership and all agreed to come help her win this tournament.

All of them that is, except for Silver Samurai, at least not this Silver Samurai. Kenuchio Harada had never been part of the Brotherhood in any of its various incarnations, however Mystique had worked with his son, Shin Harada. She had thought about recruiting Shin once more but she tried her luck with the original. To her surprise, he accepted. Mystique figured Kenuchio must want something that he believes the Gamemaster can help him obtain.  Her reminiscence was interrupted by bright flashing text on the large LED screen in front of the holding room. It read “Mystique’s Brotherhood vs. The Sisterhood of Mutants”.

Mystique’s team would be up next. She looked over the roster of the Sisterhood: Madelyn Pryor, Enchantress, Spiral, Lady Deathstrike, and Typhoid Mary. Mystique was wary of the magical abilities of Madelyn, Amora, and Spiral. She wondered who from her team would be chosen to fight. She pondered over the possible success or failure of one of her heavy hitters versus taking a calculated loss in a no win situation should the opponent prove to be a bad matchup.

The Gamemaster appeared on the screen.

GAMEMASTER: It is almost time, are you all ready?

MYSTIQUE: I have a question.

GAMEMASTER: Sure.

MYSTIQUE: Would it not be better to allow us to pick who is going into the fight not knowing for sure who the opponent will be. It would allow for some more surprises and we could better earn the grand prize by not only showing off our skills in battle but also our aptitude for strategic planning.

GAMEMASTER: A tempting notion. Let’s ask the producer.

A perturbed Mojo appeared on the screen.

MOJO: No Rewrites! The matches have already been chosen. Last minute changes always doom a television program.

GAMEMASTER: I tend to agree. Putting such decisions in the hands of the competitors increases the risk of having some truly lopsided and boring fights. Not everyone here is as intelligent as you are Miss Darkholme.

Both the Gamemaster and Mojo disappeared from the screen. Martinique Jason walked up to Mystique.

MYSTIQUE: It is very possible you will be the one facing one of your former teammates on the Sisterhood. Is there a part of you that wishes to be on the other side?

MARTINIQUE: You recruited me first.

MYSTIQUE: So, it was just a matter of timing?

MARTINIQUE: No. Even knowing what we know now and where all the pieces fell, I feel like I made the best choice.

MYSTIQUE: Good.

In the holding room containing the Sisterhood of Mutants, Madelyn Pryor contemplated how she could ensure that this tournament could benefit her no matter what the result, now that she knew all the players. She was approached by Typhoid Mary, a deadly enforcer with a fractured psyche.

TYPHOID MARY: One of us is excited to be here and can’t wait to get on the killing floor, the other one is wondering if you would rather have had the two Mastermind girls or Chimera here with you from your original team, now that we know they are here too.

Madelyn replied with a sinister smile.

MADELYN PRYOR: Mary, you can disregard all of those thoughts. I need cold blooded killers like yourself if we are going to win this thing. Martinique and Regan’s powers are redundant and it would be a waste to have them both here.

Madelyn looked over to the Enchantress, Amora.

MADELYN PRYOR: And only an unthinking idiot would not want an Asgardian goddess on their team. This Sisterhood represents the best of both versions and we will only get stronger after we win this.

In truth, Madelyn Pryor would have preferred Chimera over Mary, but the interdimensional pirate  had already been drafted into the Marauders team by Mr. Sinister. Madelyn turned her attention to Lady Deathstrike who had been watching a feed of the fight between Omega Red and the Omega Sentinel, Karima Shapandar. Madelyn stood next to Yuriko Oyama as the fight finished with Omega Red standing tall over Karima’s motionless body.

LADY DEATHSTRIKE: No matter what happens, this tournament will be a great thing for us if it disposes of the likes of her.

MADELYN PRYOR: Yes. Either as an ally of the X-Men or a lieutenant for Nimrod, she has been nothing but trouble. Omega Red does us all a favor by putting her down.

The LED screen in their holding room flashed the sign of “Mystique’s Brotherhood vs. The Sisterhood of Mutants.”

LADY DEATHSTRIKE: A reunion with Martinique may be coming up sooner than we think.

The five women of the Sisterhood waited expectantly for the exact participants to be displayed. Soon it was revealed to be Lady Deathstrike and Silver Samurai. The door opened to their room and Arcade appeared on the screen.

ARCADE: Time to come out and play! Feel free to use any and all weapons in my fun house.

SPIRAL: Yuriko is a living weapon. The true and ultimate woman of war. That samurai is as good as dead.

Both Lady Deathstrike and Silver Samurai exited their holding rooms with confidence towards their fated collision.

Sorry Yuriko but I gotta bet on the Silver Samurai. They have near equal skill feats but Harada has better strength feats (overpowering Daredevil, Shanna the She-Devil, and two wild cats at once) and speed feats (cutting a fired bullet in half rather then just dodge it). He probably won’t be able to kill her but if he cuts her in half and keeps the pieces apart I think that counts as a win.

Silver Samurai ftw.
