THE SECOND XAVIER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT PART 4

TEAMS AND SET-UP

image.jpeg.b24a16cd0c7c482840255fde7d87dae9.jpeg

James Hudson (Guardian) along with Michael Twoyoungmen (Shaman), greeted his friends and Alpha Flight teammates once they were brought into the courtyard of the X-Mansion by the teleporter, Blink. First there was the 3’6”  stocky and agile brick house with a beard, Eugene Judd, also known as Puck. Then there was the blonde haired animalistic Wild Child, the purple skinned confident and manipulative mutant Persuasion, and finally the green scaly skinned amphibious alien, Marrina Smallwood.

GUARDIAN: Welcome to the Xavier Institute, everyone. Thank you for agreeing to participate in the second Xavier Invitational Tournament on such short notice.

Eugene Judd crossed his arms and frowned.

PUCK: Yeah, well, I’m still sore about not being invited to the first one. Alpha Flight's supposed to be Canada’s finest, and yet, I got left out.

GUARDIAN: Eugene, as I told you before, the team selection wasn’t made by me personally. There is no point dwelling on it.

PERSUASION: So, who was on the first team anyway?

GUARDIAN: It was me, Sasquatch, Snowbird, Northstar, and originally Shaman, but he ended up giving up his spot to Heather.

This confused Marrina.

MARRINA SMALLWOOD: Michael, why did you give up your spot?

Before he could answer, Shaman was interrupted by Wild Child who had just come to an alarming realization. His erstwhile paramor, Aurora, was on neither the current five person squad nor the original.

WILD CHILD: Where is Jeanne-Marie? Why isn’t she a part of this?

SHAMAN: She is the reason why I am participating this time around even though I stepped down during the first tournament,  Kyle.

WILD CHILD: What?

GUARDIAN: We’ve recently learned that Aurora, along with an unknown number of other mutants, has been whisked away to a tournament to the death. These tournaments we’re participating in, they’re not just competitions. We didn’t know it at the time, but they’re meant to determine who among us is best suited to go after the missing mutants held in this deadly tournament.

SHAMAN: Originally I thought my gifts would be better suited as a healer so that we and the other mutants could go all out in the spirit of competition and Heather could get a shot at the action. Now that I know more of what is going on I want to do all I can to ensure that Alpha Flight is there on the team being sent in to rescue Aurora.

MARRINA GREENWOOD:  Understandable. It wouldn’t feel right if some of us weren't there.

GUARDIAN: Unfortunately, the reality is you will only get a chance to do that if you can win. We didn’t do too well the first time around, The only members who won their matches were Walter and Snowbird. This time, I want and expect more from all of you. Alpha Flight belongs there and it is up to the five of you to show everyone why.

Eugene grinned confidently.

PUCK: Well, there’s nothing to worry about then. If none of the original teams from the first tournament are competing, we’re most likely going up against the B teams. This should be a walk in the park.

SHAMAN: Don’t be overconfident, Eugene. There are many powerful mutants partaking in this second tournament, and we have no idea what we’re truly up against. We need to be prepared for anything.

GUARDIAN: Agreed. So far an Atlantean warrior and the simulation of the original Thunderbird have already claimed victory for their teams. Also, former Alpha Flight member, Madison Jeffries, won a match for the Utopians.

Eugene snickered.

PUCK: That traitor.

GUARDIAN: The point is you should be prepared to fight anyone or anything. Michael, take the team to the Danger Room. Alpha Flight’s turn should be coming up fast.

Shaman nodded and led the others inside.

Elsewhere, the bespectacled walking library, Anikka, also known as the mutant, Book, smiled as many of her one-time teammates gathered around her. Amongst the group was her Genoshan Excalibur teammates Wicked, Shola Inkose, Callisto, and Freakshow. Also there was the Genoshan mutant, Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Book adjusted her glasses and then addressed them.

BOOK: Thank you all for coming. I know some of you were more earnest about coming then others.

She shot a knowing glance over at Eloise Phimster.

BOOK: And some of you only came out of a never ending loyalty to Emma Frost.

Ellie folded her arms.

NEGASONIC TEENAGE WARHEAD: I won’t deny it. She is the only reason I agreed to come. I hope there is a good reason to do this tournament thing.

BOOK: Indeed there is. Magneto himself requested your presence. He doesn’t want the memory of Genosha to be forgotten. He believes that the heroes who rose from the ashes of that tragedy have as much right to be represented in this tournament as any other team of mutants. He sees this as an opportunity for all of you to show that the legacy of Genosha endures, even in the face of such overwhelming loss.

CALLISTO: I must say I never expected mutants like us to be at Xavier's school, it almost feels overdue. But it was a pleasant surprise to see Caliban around. We never would have pictured this living in the tunnels with the other Morlocks for all those years.

SHOLA INKOSE: Now that we are here, I wonder how our abilities will match up against members of the X-Men…and tfor that matter the other version of Excalibur.

FREAKSHOW: I just want to make sure everyone understands we’re not here as cannon fodder for the other mutants’ training sessions. I’m not here to be anyone’s punching bag.

BOOK: You are certainly not cannon fodder. You have just as good a shot at winning as any other team that I’ve seen.  And if you do win, you’ll be put on a secret mission that could help ensure a tragedy like Genosha never happens again."

Callisto nodded with a fierce expression.

CALLISTO: That’s all the motivation I need. But tell me, Book, are you part of the team that’s going to fight? I’m curious how that wouldl work.

Annika chuckled.

BOOK: No, Callisto. Each team only has five members, and I was just asked by Magneto to gather you all together. I’ll be supporting from the sidelines.

Emma Frost reached out to Shola Inkose telepathically.

EMMA FROST:  Shola, can you and Callisto bring the rest of your team to the Danger Room?  It is your team’s turn.

SHOLA INKOSE: Yes m’am.

The Genoshan Team arrived at the Danger Room and came across Alpha Flight. Shola sighed.

WICKED: Were you expecting someone else?

SHOLA INKOSE: Not really, I was just hoping to run into Xuan or Kitty. I haven’t seen them since Chicago.

Callisto and Puck greeted each other cordially.

PUCK: Callisto, it has been a while since we have run into one another. Still leading the charge?

CALLISTO: Always.

PUCK: Is it going to be you and me trading blows?

CALLISTO: I have no idea.

Her non-eye-patched eye then moved over to Persuasion.

CALLISTO: You’re the Purple Man’s daughter, aren’t you?

Before she could continue her interrogation of Kara Killgrave, a large hologram of Emma Frost appeared before them.

EMMA FROST: Welcome, one and all, to the second Xavier Invitational Tournament. It brings me such joy to see so many mutant faces that I have not seen for awhile. I wish you all good fortune in your upcoming matches. For this first match for your respective teams we have chosen two mutants with very different but equally impressive connections to the spiritual world around us. Wicked, Shaman, darlings, if you would both be so kind to step forward and enter the Danger Room.

Both stepped away from their teams and toward one another.

SHAMAN: You have a unique aura around you that I don’t believe I have ever felt before. I am intrigued to see the power source that creates this aura.

WICKED: You may not feel the same way once you see what I can do.

Shaman and Wicked entered the Danger Room. The steel walls surrounding them quickly faded away and were replaced by tall ancient trees. Shaman recognized the area immediately.

SHAMAN: This is the land of my tribe, the Sarcee. This is our burial ground. Why would this be chosen as our battleground? I would think it would give me an unfair advantage.

Wicked was cold in her response with almost an eerie echo.

WICKED: This burial ground doesn’t give you the advantage you think it does Shaman. Let’s see how you handle the spirits of your past.

Shaman should take this. Wicked is kind of limited with her ability. Shaman should already have counter spells for what she does.

Note to self: gotta get him up against Nightwolf someday.
