May Lee Jinju stood alone in the park; her hands clenched into fists at her sides. She had just heard the news that Kim Kaphwan had once again chosen Chang Koehan and Choi Bounge to be on his team for the upcoming King of Fighters tournament. May Lee knew she should be used to it by now, but the sting of disappointment over not being picked to be on his team was still fresh. Despite everything, she admired Kim’s dedication to rehabilitating the two former criminals. His commitment to turning them into heroes was part of what made him such a great man, but it didn’t make it any easier for her to be left out yet again. She looked down at a crumpled invitation in her hand. Luong, Kim’s flirtatious and dangerous ally, had offered her a spot on a different team alongside herself and Kim's master, Gang-Il. The thought made May Lee uncomfortable. Luong was provocative, and May Lee didn’t trust her motives. She didn’t believe teaming up with someone like that aligned with the path of the hero she wanted to be.

May Lee delved into any heroic stories she could find to distract herself from thinking about the tournament when she came upon a story about a group of teenage martial artists in Japan called the Shinpaku Alliance. They were a ragtag team that had come together to fight against bullies, delinquents, and other troublemakers. May Lee felt a surge of excitement. These were kindred spirits, people who fought for justice, just like her! She knew what she had to do.

Within a few days, May Lee found herself in the bustling streets of Japan, searching for the Shinpaku Alliance. After asking around, she was introduced to two of its members, Ikki Takeda and Kozo Ukita. Ikki Takeda had blue hair like May Lee’s but a much lighter shade. He also had taped fists and the unmistakable stance of a boxer. Kozo Ukita was a large young man with shades on and short spiky brown hair. May Lee was not sure why, but he reminded her of Team Japan’s Goro Daimon.

“I’ve made the trip from Korea to join the Shinpaku Alliance,” May Lee declared with conviction. “I believe fate has brought me here to help you in your fight for justice. Let me become your first international member.”

Takeda and Ukita exchanged glances, both were stunned and a little bit in awe.

“Wow,” Ukita muttered. “I hate to admit it, but Nijima must be doing a hell of a job with his newsletter and that ridiculous website if someone like you found out about us all the way from Korea.”

May Lee smiled. “The story of how your group came together is amazing. So, what do I need to do to join?”

Takeda scratched his head. “Well, it’s not really our call. We should take you to see Nijima. He’s the one who decides these things.”

They led her to the Shinpaku Alliance’s headquarters, where she met with Haruo Nijima, the self-appointed Governor General of the group. He was a scrawny young man with a pointy nose, pronounced pointy ears, and long fingernails. Takeda off-handedly said something about him being an actual alien, but May Lee could not tell if he was joking. May Lee repeated her request to join the alliance to him.

“I want to become the first international member of the Shinpaku Alliance.”

“I think it would be pretty cool to have a representative in Korea,” stated Takeda.

“I agree,” added Ukita.

Nijima was initially bursting with excitement about the thought of the Shinpaku Alliance expanding its power. His expression then became serious.

“We have to be very careful about this,” he said. “If you’re going to be the face of the Shinpaku Alliance in another country, you need to be strong. We can’t just let anyone join without being sure of their abilities.”

“I am strong,” May Lee insisted.

“What discipline do you specialize in?” asked Takeda.

“Taekwondo,” May Lee answered.

“Hey, that's just like Kisara,” Ukita remarked.

Nijima’s eyes lit up with an idea. “That’s it! If you want to join the Shinpaku Alliance, you’ll have to defeat Kisara Nanjo in a fight.”

Takeda frowned. “Isn’t that asking a bit much?” He motioned to himself and Ukita.  “Kisara once took down both of us at the same time when she was with Ragnarok. Remember?”

“That’s exactly why she’s the perfect test,” Nijima said with a smirk. “If May Lee here can beat Kisara, then she’s definitely strong enough to represent the Shinpaku Alliance.”

The group gathered at an abandoned factory later that day after sending word to Kisara to meet them there. May Lee waited nervously with Nijima, Takeda, and Ukita, until finally, Kisara Nanjo arrived.

Kisara was striking with an intense stare. She wore a loose-fitting red shirt that hung off her shoulders and her jeans were cut short on one side resembling a pair of shorts on her right leg.

“What’s this about, Nijima?” Kisara demanded with her arms folded. “Why are we meeting in this creepy place?”

Nijima stepped forward with a grin. “Kisara, we’ve got a new recruit who wants to join the Shinpaku Alliance. She traveled here all the way from Korea to request membership in person. But she has to prove herself first, and the best way to do that is by fighting you.”

Kisara’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not interested in playing your games, Nijima. Also, you’re a sexist jerk. None of the other new members had to fight to join. Why should she?”

Nijima held up his hands defensively. “It’s for her own benefit. Our enemies could come after her, and we would need to be sure that she is strong enough to defend herself because the Shinpaku Alliance generals wouldn’t be around to step in.”

May Lee stepped forward. “Although I am willing to prove myself here, I want you to know that you need not worry, Commander Nijima. I’m sure I could handle anything thrown my way. My master, Kim Kaphwan, taught me well.”

Kisara’s expression changed to a mix of curiosity and respect. “Kim Kaphwan? You’re really his disciple?”

“Yes,” May Lee replied proudly.

Nijima was confused. “Who’s Kim Kaphwan?”

Kisara rolled her eyes. “You’re an idiot, Nijima. You need to watch more martial arts tournaments.”

Ukita chimed in as he shook his head. “It is pretty strange that you know so little about martial arts, considering you’re the head of a martial arts collective.”

Nijima flailed his arms. “I bring so many other things to the Alliance that no one else can."

Kisara turned back to May Lee. “Kim Kaphwan is a bit weird and corny with all his speeches about justice, but he’s also one of the best taekwondo masters in the world. That is undeniable. I’d learn a lot from him. You have to introduce me to him.”

May Lee  was insulted on Kim’s behalf.

Kisara continued. “I am sure if I got the chance to meet him, he would jump at the chance to make me his disciple given my history as a delinquent with Ragnarok.”

Kisara was right. Kim would absolutely be pulled in by Kisara’s history of a bad girl gone good. May Lee did not want to admit it, but if it were to happen her position as Kim’s prized pupil could be threatened.

Kisara smirked, sensing May Lee’s hesitation. “How about this? We will fight after all. If you win, you become a member of the Shinpaku Alliance. But if I win, you have to introduce me to Master Kim.”

May Lee briefly thought it over, although the answer was obvious. She had not come all this way to not even try. She couldn’t back down now.

 “Deal.”

Nice to see Kisara Nanjo finally in a match. I added her onto the site years ago.

I like the setup and give it a 5.0.
