BATSPIDER WARS

BATTLE 1

After a flash of light, Spider-Gwen landed on the edge of a gothic skyscraper. The towering rooftops of Gotham City loomed around her like dark, jagged teeth. The sky was a murky gray.. Gwen Stacy pulled her hood tighter over her head,as she looked around at her surroundings.

“This isn’t New York…” she muttered, taking in the skyline.

There were elements of this strange new location that reminded her of the various versions of New York she had swung through with the Spider Society, especially Noir’s minus the sepia tone. With a flick of her wrist, Gwen fired a webline and leapt into the air. She started to swing across the rooftops.

“Or…maybe it is? This place feels more like…Chicago? But with…gargoyles?” she remarked. “Okay, Gwen, think. You’ve been teleported before. Just find the local Spider-person and figure out what’s up. If there is one, that is.”

As she soared over an old clock tower, Gwen’s eyes caught movement below. It was four men in clown makeup, wielding baseball bats, trying to pry open the back of an armored van. She rolled her eyes beneath her mask.

“Some things never change, huh? Doesn’t matter which universe.”

She dove down and landed with a loud thud in the middle of the group. The thugs turned toward her, startled.

“Who the hell are you supposed to be?” one of them sneered. He raised up his bat.

“Just your friendly neighborhood Spiderwoman. Uh, whatever neighborhood this is.”

Gwen swung into action. She ducked under a wild swing and delivered a swift kick to the thug’s chest. She webbed him to the side of the van. She moved with grace and speed. Her fists and feet striking in rapid succession, until the clowns were left dazed and webbed up in a neat bundle.

“See? This is why you don’t skip clown college,” she teased as she dusted off her hands.

She took to the skies again, swinging past shadowy alleyways and rundown buildings, until another crime in progress, a group of masked burglars fleeing from a jewelry store, stopped her in her tracks.

Meanwhile, deep in the Batcave, Stephanie Brown sat hunched over the Batcomputer. Her eyes flickered between multiple screens displaying Gotham’s current hotspots.. Bruce was out on Justice League business for a while, leaving the Bat Family to handle Gotham’s protection. They worked a rotation and on this night it was Stephanie’s turn. She tapped a few keys as several alerts flashed across the screen.

“What the…?” Stephanie muttered as the screens updated.

Then suddenly one by one, each alert that had popped up in the last fifteen minutes showed a status of ‘Resolved.’

“Who’s been on fire tonight?”

She reached for her communicator to call the other member of the extended Bat Family currently on patrol.

“Huntress, you got eyes on any of this? Crime’s appearing and then disappearing before I can even blink.”

“Nope, it’s been quiet on my end, too quiet” Huntress replied. “I’ll keep an eye out though. I got a tip that something big may be going down at my location.”

Stephanie looked back at the computer. The Batcomputer pulled up a series of images from nearby security cameras, each one showing the same figure in action, a woman in a white, black  and pink costume. Stephanie didn’t recognize her at all.

“Well, well…who do we have here? New vigilante in Gotham?” Stephanie said, watching Gwen swing through the city on a grainy screen.

The computer chimed in. “File recently added. Subject: Gwen Stacy, alias Spider-Woman. Wanted for the murder of Peter Parker.”

Stephanie raised an eyebrow. “Wanted for murder? So this Gwen Stacy is cut from the same cloth as Helena? Is that it?”

The Batcomputer beeped again, it displayed a probability matrix suggesting the crimes might be orchestrated as a distraction due to a sudden surge in crime for the night coinciding with Gwen’s mysterious appearance. Given Gwen’s file, the computer had determined something nefarious was likely.

Stephanie sighed and rubbed her temples. “Bruce and his paranoia…still, he’s usually right.”

Stephanie decided to look into it. She pulled up a map of Gwen’s known route so far on the computer and used it to calculate her next probable location. She then suited up. Within minutes, Batgirl was riding her sleek motorcycle through the alleys of Gotham.

Gwen, meanwhile, was in the middle of webbing up a pair of muggers in an alley,

“Does this city even sleep? Or do they just schedule crime waves every half hour?” she quipped.

Suddenly, her spider-sense blared, and she spun around and instinctively fired a web that snagged a shadowy figure and pinned them against the brick wall.

“Whoa! What the—?” Stephanie Brown, now firmly webbed, glanced up with a smirk. “Nice reflexes. I thought my stealth game was on point, but clearly, I might need a little more work.”

Gwen’s eyes narrowed beneath her mask. “Who are you supposed to be?”

“Batgirl,” Stephanie replied. “And I come in peace, I just want to talk.”  She slid a batarang in her hand and used it to try and cut the webbing. “This stuff is stronger than it looks.”

Gwen was inquisitive. “Batgirl, huh? You know a Spider-Man?”

“Nope, can’t say that I do. I’m a hero though, and Gotham is kind of my turf,” said Stephanie.

Gwen released her from the webbing just as Stephanie was about to break free.

“Heroes don’t usually lurk in the shadows,” Gwen remarked.

“I know it seems sinister, but it’s just a Gotham thing,” explained Stephane. “Speaking of which,, what brings you here to our city?”

“I don’t know,” replied Gwen.

“You’re going to have to do a little bit better than that.” Stephanie folded her arms. “It wouldn’t happen to have anything to do with that murder charge you have, does it Gwen?”

Gwen became defensive. “Wait, I didn’t give you my name. What are you…. Who are you..”

‘I’m just well informed, but I still need a few more answers.”

Gwen scoffed. “You are not as informed as you think and I don’t have the time or inclination to explain it to you.”

Gwen turned to leave and fired a webline at the nearest ledge. Stephanie grabbed her arm.

“Wait! We are not done here.”

Gwen swiftly knocked her back. “Yes, we are.”

Stephanie jumped back to her feet. “If that’s how you want to play it, I guess the questions will have to come after.”

Another good set-up and good start to another arc, Johnny. I hope you can get back to your X-Men arc, though, while keeping this one up.

As for the match, I have a feeling Gwen's powers would be too much for Stephanie in a straight fight, even with Steph's skill and gadgets. They might talk things out before it gets too serious, though.
