Ayane Mitsui stepped into a small American diner. She looked around with curiosity. It was her first time visiting the United States, and this quaint eatery was suggested to her to grab some food. She adjusted her duffel bag on her shoulder and made her way to a stool near the counter. She grabbed a menu and looked over it with uncertainty.

"Hamburgers, pancakes, waffles..." Ayane mumbled to herself. "What should I even try?"

Her attention shifted when something caught her eye. It was a framed picture hanging on the wall behind the counter. In the photo, two women stood side by side, one of them had short dark hair with red streaks, was wearing a raglan shirt, and had a bandaid over her left eye, the other woman was blonde with a black beanie, a yellow crop top and white boots. Ayana didn’t recognize the first woman, but she immediately recognized the second one.

"Tina Armstrong," she said under her breath.

Just then, a woman approached her, holding a notepad and smiling warmly. "Hey there! My name’s Mila. You ready to order?"

Ayane blinked a few times, the other woman from the picture was now standing in front of her.. "Wait... You're the woman in that picture!" She pointed toward the wall.

Mila glanced over her shoulder at the photo. "Oh, that? Yeah, that's me. What about it?"

"You know Tina Armstrong?"

Mila chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, we’re friends. We train together sometimes." She tilted her head a little bit.  "You a big fan of Tina?"

"No!" Ayane blurted out. She leaned back in her seat. "I... I strongly dislike her. She made me so mad when she and her father toured Japan. She defeated my idol, Manami Toyota, in a match!"

Mila smiled. "Is that right? Well, I think you'd actually like Tina if you met her. She's pretty sweet, once you get past all the bravado."

Before Ayane could respond, another customer called out, "Hey, Mila! Can I get a refill over here?"

Mila held up a finger to Ayane. "Hold that thought."

Ayane watched as Mila moved with ease through the diner, her strong, athletic build unmistakable even beneath her loose clothing.

When Mila returned, Ayane couldn't help but ask, "Are you... also a professional wrestler?"

Mila laughed and shook her head. "Nah, Wrestling is cool and all, I used to idolize Tina’s dad, Bass Armstrong, but I’m into mixed martial arts. I did get the chance to fight him and beat him in the last Dead or Alive tournament, which was really fun. This diner gig is just a way to pay the bills while I train for the nexttournament."

"Dead or Alive?" Ayane's curiosity was piqued. "What’s that?"

Mila leaned against the counter and she explained in earnest. "It’s this massive tournament where all kinds of fighters from around the world compete for a huge cash prize. There are wrestlers, muay thai fighters, karate fighters, even some ninjas have competed in it before, You name it, it's been there."

Ayane’s eyes widened. "That... that sounds amazing."

The same customer called out again, ready to order, and Mila sighed. "Give me a sec."

She returned to him to get his order. While Mila was busy, Ayane pulled out her phone and quickly looked up highlights of the Dead or Alive tournament. Her eyes were glued to the screen as fighters from all over the world showed off their skills, each one more impressive than the last. Mila returned to find Ayane engrossed in the video.

"Pretty cool, right?" she asked as she peeked over Ayane’s shoulder.

"Super cool," said Ayane. “You know I always wanted to be a professional wrestler for the longest time, but then I got thrown into the kickboxing world and started to grow a passion for that. I think I’ve started to appreciate other martial arts too."

"So you're a kickboxer, huh?" Mila asked with a grin. "You could totally compete."

Ayane laughed and shook her head in disbelief. "Compete? No way. I’m still in school."

Mila scoffed and crossed her arms. "That shouldn’t stop you. There’s a girl named Honoka and a girl named Marie Rose, both of whom are about your age, they compete. If they can do it, so can you."

Excitement rose up in Ayane’s chest. "Really? You think I could?"

Mila smirked. “If you’re good enough. She could sense the enthusiasm from Ayane. "Tell you what. I can do for you what Tina once did for me. If you’re free later, I get off my shift in about thirty minutes. We could head to the gym down the street, and we can see if you’ve got what it takes. Beat me, and I’ll help you get signed up myself."

Ayane’s heart raced with anticipation. "You’re on!"

Ayane stood up to leave, her excitement overflowing, she glanced back at Mila, who was standing by the counter with her notepad still in hand waiting for an order that would never come.

"I guess I’ll see you at the gym," Mila called after her.

"I’ll be there!"

Nice to see Ayane Mitsui finally in a match!

Ayane's High Kick was one of the few shows that got me into Anime.

I'm going to just speculate that and anime girl trumps a low tier fighting game girl.

From what I can tell, they are kind of similar in terms of strengths. The low tier fighting game girl might even be better, cause she's faster on the rushdown and doesn't allow people to strategize too much before she pummels them on the ground. I like Mila's odds.

From all that I looked up when researching the character, there was nothing that I saw that would put Ayane above a typical fighting game character.

Here is a video that covers both of Ayane’s fights.

Yeah, the show only had two episodes.

Well Ayane can take some punishment that's for sure.

Good set-up and match-up of perky and determined fighters, Johnny. I'm not familiar with either girl, but their personalities seem to align well with the story.

As for the match, I've just seen videos of both fighters. While Ayane seems to have high potential as fighter, she's also pretty raw in skill and according to her anime, had only recently gotten into kickboxing. Mila, however, uses a more versatile combat style in MMA, has more experience, and fights a tougher grade of opponents.

I'd say Mila wins the sparring match, but given Ayane's potential and determination not to go down, it may not be an easy win.
