BATTLE OF NEXT GEN PROTAGS

The cab ride to Metro City was predictably quiet for Shun'ei. His friend Meitenkun had naturally fallen asleep against the window with his pillow tucked beneath his arm. Shun'ei looked over at him and then down at the letter in his hand. He reread his master’s words for the third time.

Shun'ei, I’ve heard from Terry Bogard of a place where you can test your skills. Metro City. Terry tells me that there are fighters there, tough fighters, who walk the streets looking for battle. He mentioned having crossed paths with some of them recently. This place, it’s chaotic, but the perfect training ground. Go, test yourself away from the other participants. You need to be sharper than ever before the next King of Fighters tournament. I believe in you.

Shun’ei could hear the words in his head in Tung Fu Rue’s familiar, reassuring tone. The cab suddenly slowed to a halt and Shun’ei looked up from the letter.

"We’re here," the driver grumbled.

"Which part of Metro City is this?" Shun'ei asked.

"The part of town I feel safe driving through," the driver shot back with a smirk. "You’ll see what I mean."

Shun'ei paid the drive before gently shaking Meitenkun. "Hey, wake up. We’re here."

Meitenkun yawned. "Huh... already?"

He lazily rubbed his eyes before following Shun'ei out of the cab. The two stepped onto the sidewalk, and immediately Shun'ei’s eyes widened with surprise. Everywhere he looked there were groups gathered around what could only be described as street brawls, people fighting out in the open for what seemed like no reason at all.

"Is this what Terry meant?" Shun'ei wondered as he watched a pair of fighters slam each other into the ground as a crowd cheered.

"What kind of place is this?" he asked aloud.

Meitenkun yawned again. "I dunno... but we should find a hotel or something. I need a nap."

Before Shun'ei could respond, Meitenkun sleep walked straight into a man in a blue tracksuit. The collision knocked the man back and he split the contents of his gym bag onto the ground.

"Hey, watch where you’re going, punk!" the man shouted with anger.

Meitenkun, still half-asleep, barely registered the man’s fury.

"Sorry," he mumbled, but it was too late.

The man threw off his bag and clenched his fists. "You think you can just bump into me and walk away? I’ll teach you a lesson!"

Shun'ei sighed.. "Here we go..."

Meitenkun’s posture drooped even further as the man charged at him with an aggressive jab. Meitenkun sidestepped, yawning mid-motion, as he evaded the assault. He swayed like a leaf in the wind, dodging each strike effortlessly. His lazily deflected blows and occasionally countered with surprisingly powerful palm strikes. With one swift motion, Meitenkun sent the man flying back with a heavy blow, knocking him out cold.

The crowd that had gathered started murmuring amongst themselves. A group of thugs, members of the local Box Head gang, swarmed the unconscious man, eyeing his belongings.

Shun'ei’ took notice of this. "I don’t think so."

Shun’ei summoned his Amplified Specter Hands, two massive, ethereal hands that floated beside him. One glowed blue with hydrokinesis power and the other glowed red with pyrokinetic power. With a flick of his wrist, the hands smashed into the box head group and sent them scattering in every direction

As the thugs scrambled away, the man in the tracksuit stirred and woke up just in time to witness Shun'ei’s glowing hands fade from sight. His eyes went wide in panic.

"M-monster!" he gasped as he scrambled to his feet.

Without thinking twice, he bolted down the street, disappearing  behind the crowd.

Shun'ei sighed.  "That... wasn’t the reaction I was expecting, but perhaps I should have."

Meitenkun, still groggy, yawned. "Can we just find a hotel now?"

The man in the tracksuit didn’t stop running until he burst through the doors of Luke’s gym.  Luke, who had been in the middle of training a group of new fighters, turned to face him with confusion spread across his face..

"Whoa, buddy, what happened to you?" Luke asked.

The man bent over and gasped for air,  his hands on his knees. "It was... it was this guy! This weird guy with... glowing hands!" he sputtered. "He was... terrorizing the streets! Knocking people around with these... these giant ghost hands!"

Luke blinked as he tried to process the frantic description. "Glowing hands, huh? Sounds like some of the other crazy stuff I’ve seen lately. You sure you didn’t imagine it?"

"No way, man! I swear! He’s out there, probably scaring more people right now!"

Luke scratched his chin. "Alright, alright. I’ll check it out. Can’t have people freaked out around here. I want Metro City to be safe."

The man quickly gave a physical description of what Shun'ei looked like to Luke, including his giant headphones, green hair, purple tie, and the fact that he wore his jacket like a cape.

Liuke smirked. "Huh, another one of these oddly-dressed folks. Seems like they’re coming out of the woodwork recently."

With a nod, he set out to find this mysterious stranger.

Back on the streets, Shun'ei and Meitenkun were still wandering aimlessly, Shun'ei frowned as he checked his pockets.

"Do we even have enough money for a hotel?"

Meitenkun stretched with his eyes barely open. "You should’ve exchanged currency back when we had the chance. Now we’re broke in a strange city. Good job, Shun."

Before Shun'ei could respond, a voice interrupted them.

"Hey! You the guy scaring everyone with glowing hands?"

Shun'ei turned to see a muscular man in a mixed martial arts outfit standing confidently in front of him. The man’s arms were crossed but he did not appear angry.

"Scaring people? What are you talking about?" Shun'ei asked.

Luke raised an eyebrow. "The floating ghost hands, man. You’ve been knocking people around with 'em, right?"

Shun'ei sighed. "I was just trying to help. I wasn’t looking for trouble.."

Meitenkun spoke up, still half-asleep. "He is looking for a good fight, though..."

Luke smirked. "Is that right? Well, if that’s what you wanted, you should’ve just come to the gym." He cracked his knuckles. "But hey, I’m down to give you a taste right here. What do you say?"

Shun'ei glanced at Meitenkun, then back at Luke. "You? I’m not sure you’d be much of a challenge," he remarked. He looked over Luke’s MMA outfit. "It doesn’t look like you’re ready for a real fight."

Luke’s grin faded for a moment,  but then he laughed. "Oh, now you’re just asking for it. Funny thing, you looking down on my attire dressed like that.”

Shun'ei rolled his eyes and stepped forward. "Fine. Just make sure you know what you’re getting into."

Luke rolled his shoulders. "Oh, don’t worry. I’ve seen some crazy powers around here lately. I’m actually curious to see those glowing hands up close."

Shun'Ei  has at least a portion if not half of Verse's power and Verse is a reality warper. He wears the headphones to keep the voice in his head from taking over. Luke probably fights better but he ain't overcoming two giant hands doing stuff to him.
