VELMAS: THE MUSICAL

image.jpeg.72e7ac98d90e13fde5b9c87f9b10bf2a.jpeg

[Scene: Velma Dinkley’s Private Detective Office. Velma carefully places a bouquet of fresh flowers on her desk, gifted to her by Daphne. Beside them is a framed photo of the Mystery Incorporated gang including her, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby Doo given to her by Fred to help decorate her new workspace. She steps back, looking around her modest but cozy office, a soft smile appears on her face.]

Velma Dinkley:
(singing)
All the roads we’ve roamed, the monsters unmasked,
The laughs we’ve shared, the memories amassed,
But I felt a spark, it called out my name,
To find a new path, a more dangerous game.

I loved our team, I loved those days,
But now it’s time for us to part ways.
To stand on my own, not just one of the crowd,
But I promise you all I’ll make Mystery Inc. proud.

The world can be a scary place out on your own
To discover what awaits me, I’ll stay be the phone

[Velma Dinkley smiles to herself as she sits behind her desk, waiting for her first client. She waits. And waits some more… Finally, her phone rings. She grabs it eagerly.]

Velma Dinkley:
Hello, Dinkley Investigations!

Shaggy:
Like, hey, Velma! Just wanted to make sure you, like, really don’t wanna come with us on this boat cruise! Sun, snacks, and… did I mention all-you-can-eat snacks? Best part, no monsters in sight.

Velma Dinkley:
(laughs)
Thanks, Shaggy, but I’m going to stick with my plan here. But you two have a great time, okay?

Scooby-Doo:
(from the background)
Good luck, Velma! Hey Shaggy, did you pack enough Scooby Snacks?

Shaggy:
Oh no, Scoob! Like, I gotta go, Velma, we’ve got a snack emergency!

[Velma laughs, ending the call with a fond smile.]

Velma Dinkley:
Well, here’s to hoping the next call is a case.

[Scene: A dim, smoky chamber in Hell. Velma Kelly stands center stage looking like a million bucks, staring at the Devil himself, who watches from a throne with an amused grin as she sings. She puts her all into the performance. She may only have the attention of the Prince of Darkness, but it is better than no attention at all. She veers from her usual numbers into a proposition.]

Velma Kelly:
(singing)
Down here, forgotten, my name’s grown old,
The crowds have left, the spotlight’s gone cold.
But bring me back, oh Lord of Flame,
And I’ll make sure they’ll never forget my name.

The Devil:
You desire a trip back to the mortal realm?

Velma Kelly:
Yes. No one speaks of my stardom anymore, my trial, or even my murders. The passage of time has rendered me a forgotten relic.

The Devil:
So, you wish to return to the world to remind humanity of your existence. Very well, I will oblige you. In return you must do something for me.

Velma Kelly:
(smiling slyly)
Name it.

The Devil:
Five souls. Sinners, ripe for harvest. You may target men who have been unfaithful and consider it my gift to you for all your wonderful performances.

Velma Kelly:
(bowing)
Deal.

The Devil:
Once your task is complete you can reveal yourself before returning here. That way you can once again dominate the news cycle, and your stardom will have new life.

[Velma Kelly winks, ready to make her comeback.]

[Scene: A few days later, back in Velma Dinkley’s office. She looks up as her door opens to reveal Nan Blake, Daphne’s mother, looking distraught.]

Nan Blake:
Velma, I need your help. Barty… he’s missing. The police think he just skipped town, left for another woman, but I know that’s not it. Daphne’s father wouldn’t just abandon us!

Velma Dinkley:
(concerned)
Jinkies. How is Daphne? Is she okay?

Nan Blake:
(sighing)
She’s devastated, Velma. She’s barely left her room… she’s shutting down.

Velma Dinkley:
(sighing)
I’ll take the case, Mrs. Blake. I’ll find out what happened to Mr. Blake and help Daphne too. I promise.

[Scene: A smoky jazz club. Velma Dinkley steps inside, she has heard from Nan that Barty Blake would sometimes frequent this establishment. She hopes to find something that perhaps the police have missed. She is also looking for Fred who had agreed to meet her there to help out Daphne. She is distracted when she overhears a conversation at the bar.]

Blonde Woman:
Still no word.

Brunette Woman:
No. No one has seen him since yesterday. Not only did he not come home last night, he didn’t show up to work today either. I filed a police report this morning. I hope he's ok.

[The Blonde Woman places a comforting hand on the Brunette Woman’s shoulder.]

Brunette Woman:
I didn’t want to be alone tonight in that empty house.

Blonde Woman:
I understand.

[As Velma Dinkley listens to their conversation, a familiar figure takes the stage. Velma Kelly, dressed in her flapper best, begins her seductive performance. She sings with eyes scanning the crowd for her next mark.]

Velma Kelly:
(singing)
Men with your secrets, hiding lies,
You think you’re safe with your alibis.
But I see you and you’re on my list.
You better watch it, don’t try to resist.

Despite your efforts, you’re gonna catch a case.
Once I’ve ensnared you in my warm embrace.
Don’t worry about it, she’ll never know.
Come around to see me after the show.

[Velma Dinkley finally spots Fred. He is drifting toward the stage. He is enraptured. Unable to help himself, Fred begins to sing to Velma Kelly, trying to charm her.]

Fred:
(singing)
You got me hooked after just one look,
I still can’t believe that’s all it took
We could go dancing, side by side
Care to let me be your guide?

Velma Kelly:
(singing back, smirking)
Too young, too green, a boy at best,
Find yourself some other quest.
Come back when life has left a mark,
Once your heart has felt the dark.

[Fred looks a little hurt as he steps away from the stage, meeting Velma’s disapproving glare.]

Velma Dinkley:
Fred, what was that?

Fred:
(sighing)
I don’t even know. I guess… I’m feeling lost without the gang. And with Daphne hurting, I don’t know what to do. It’s like all my instincts are off. I don’t even know if I will be much help to you right now, honestly.

Velma Dinkley:
Maybe the best way you can help is to be with Daphne. No matter what she thinks, she needs a friend. You should go see her.

Fred:
You’re right. Thanks Velma.

[Backstage, Velma Kelly changes out of her performance attire, humming to herself, triumphant.]

Velma Kelly:
(singing to herself)
Two down, three to go,
The Devil will be pleased, you know.
Maybe it’s time to find a new spot,
A fresh batch of targets for this deadly plot.

Once I’m done, they won’t forget about me.
The name on everyone’s lips will be Velma Kelly.

[She smirks, thinking of her next move.]

[Scene: Now alone at the entrance of the Jazz Club, Velma Dinkley stands in contemplation, her thoughts weighing heavily on her.]

Velma Dinkley:
(singing)

Did he just leave? Something else at play?
I feel like a big mystery has unfurled this day

I’ll solve this case, I’ll find the truth,
Bring peace to Daphne when I discover the proof.

[Velma looks straight forward with determination.]

Can Velma Dinkley solve the case and stop Velma Kelly from completing her mission, or will Velma Kelly succeed in her plan and regain the infamy she so craves?
