(NOTE: It has been a while since I have seen Ghost Protocol, but all the information I find lists Paula Patton's character's name as Jane Carter and not June Carter as she is listed in the CBUB Database)

In an IMF briefing room in Langley, Virginia, a holographic display of a mysterious man known only by the codename Cerberus flickered to life. The figure spoke with two different interchanging cadences, a smooth baritone and a mechanical rasp.

CERBERUS: To the world’s intelligence agencies, I present you with a challenge. One hostage. One location. One victor. The winner will claim the ultimate prize: access to the world’s deepest secrets. I am Cerberus, the gatekeeper of truth.

The hologram of the mysterious figure morphed into a map of the Swiss Alps. A sprawling compound nestled atop a jagged cliff was highlighted. Around the room, the IMF team of Ethan Hunt, William Brandt, Jane Carter, and Benji Dunn wore similar confused expressions on their faces.

JANE: What?

BENJI: Cerberus? Sounds like to me someone took too many online villain courses.

BRANDT: I’m sure I’ve seen “gatekeeper of truth” on a message board somewhere.

HUNT: There has been confirmation that that compound was recently occupied and fortified.

JANE: Seems a little theatrical, don’t you think? Does this guy have a manifesto or maybe a Bond movie fetish.

The voice of the mission director echoed through the room.

MISSION DIRECTOR: Cerberus is believed to be a former private contractor who went rogue after being betrayed by his employers. He’s been linked to multiple data breaches and blackmail schemes targeting government officials. This could be retaliation.

BENJI: Or a midlife crisis.

MISSION DIRECTOR: Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to infiltrate the compound, rescue the hostage, and secure the data.

Ethan Hunt furrowed his brow.

HUNT: So, what’s really going on here?

In the ISIS headquarters in New York, Mallory Archer played a similar holographic message for Lana Kane as they sat across from each other around Mallory’s desk.

CERBERUS: To those who dare accept my challenge: prove your agency’s worth. Only the cunning, the brave, and the relentless will prevail.

After the hologram faded, Lana took a sip of her coffee and rolled her eyes.

LANA: What the hell is this?

MALLORY: What do you mean?

LANA: Prove your agency’s worth? In what, an open mic night? This is a joke right?

Mallory took a moment and then sighed with a small smirk on her face.

MALLORY: For the record, I always thought the presentation was a little cheesy.

Back in Langley, the Mission Director was forthright about the real motivation behind the objective.

MISSION DIRECTOR: There was a heated exchange that started as friendly banter between several top officials of various intelligence agencies across the world. This took place during their annual high stakes poker game. The result of the heated exchange was a series of training ops pitting different agencies against one another to prove superiority.

BRANDT: That might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

BENJI: I don’t know, It makes sense to me! I’d wager several catastrophic events in history were fueled by trash talk over a high-stakes card game in a dark room somewhere.

HUNT: We’re in.

JANE: Are you serious?

HUNT: It’s not often you get the chance to hone your skills in a simulated op against other top agents. There could be some valuable information to learn… and I like our chances.

MISSION DIRECTOR: This particular challenge is for Agent Carter specifically as the point person. No worries though, everyone will get their chance.

JANE: Well, ok then.

Back in New York, Lana was initially less obliged to join the competition after Mallory Archer had spilt the tea.

LANA: Let me get this straight, all this time and energy went into building this elaborate exercise because some poker bros got salty?

MALLORY: The head of MI6 called me an amateur! An amateur, Lana! I was strategically disadvantaged. Do not let me lose face to those smug bastards.

LANA: I can’t believe you’re having me do this.

MALLORY: Think of it as good training to sharpen your skills.

LANA: How does pandering to your ego sharpen my skills?

Cyril Figgis poked his head in the door.

CYRIL: Should I get started on the paperwork for this operation?

Lana relented.

LANA: Yeah, Cyril, why don’t you do that. While you’re at it, put ‘Mallory’s hurt feelings’ under ‘mission objectives’.

Mallory sipped on her martini.

MALLORY: You can be so insufferable, Lana.

Back in Langley, the IMF team looked over the details given to them in the report.

BENJI: They’ve really gone all out on this thing. Look at this, motion sensors, drones, heat seeking turrets. Who had those just lying around?

HUNT: The focus should be on stealth and infiltration.

JANE: Sounds good, let’s map out a strategy that focuses on subtle infiltration. I am thinking some misdirection, some disguises.

Back in New York, the planning was a little less formal.

LANA: So, how do you think I should approach this exercise?

MALLORY: Just do what you always do, your proverbial ‘wrecking ball style’. Make an entrance, keep them guessing, and take the prize before they even know what you’re doing. You can destroy the place if you want, as long as you get out with the data and the hostage first and come out on top.

The next day, Jane Carter and Lana Kane crossed paths on the way to the compound within the Alps. Jane wore a black tactical suit while Lana sported a winterized combat jacket. The two women locked eyes, immediately recognizing one another.

LANA: Well, well, if it isn't the belle of the ball? How is the IMF gig treating you these days?

JANE: Better than being Archer’s babysitter, I’m sure. Speaking of which….about that party… I had no idea he was with you. My apologies. And, uh. No offense but he didn’t exactly scream ‘taken’.

Lana shrugged.

LANA: Archer’s a jerk, but he’s my jerk. Still, water under the bridge

JANE: Good. Because if I had to do it over again, I’d still steer clear. I’ve heard stories.

LANA: Oh, you have no idea. But, enough about him. I take it you’re my competition for this thing.

JANE: It looks that way. Good luck up there, Kane.

LANA: I won’t need it as much as you, Carter.

Despite her initial annoyance about this convoluted operation, Lana felt the competitive juices flowing through her as she and Jane exchanged glances. The game was underway.

Yeah, I made a typo went I sent it in. I wish there was a way to change it. I know there's other characters in the site that have either a typo or the wrong profile picture all together

Other than that I'm happy to see her character getting used.

Great job as always

Thanks for putting her in. It was my favorite of the Mission Impossible movies. I have a similar experience although it wasn't a typo. After I saw Shang-Chi in theatres, I put his mother in the database because I really liked that scene. I tried to find her name online and found Jiang Li only later to discover it is actually Ying Li

Never underestimate the staff's abilities in this regard. :D

Wish I knew more about Jane and Lana, though. I've been meaning to catch up on the Mission: Impossible films and watch Archer.

I might lean Carter. Like most characters of Archer Lana character is more a parody of a tough spy character than an actual one. Carter on the other hand seemed to be the more competent and skilled special agent.
