The seedy alleyway was silent.  Leonardo and Donatello walked side by side on a return home after scouting a lead on potential Foot Clan activity. The moon cast a bright glow that highlighted the emptiness of their surroundings.

“This area’s too quiet,” Leonardo remarked as he gripped his twin katanas tighter.

Donatello scanned the shadows. “Maybe we’re just paranoid, but I’m getting that ‘ambush incoming’ vibe.”

At that moment, two figures stepped into the light. One was a hulking man with rippling muscles that wore a crude mask shaped like a rhino’s face. In his hands, he gripped a massive mace. Beside him stood a leaner figure wearing a lizard-shaped mask. He  held an axe and a spiked shield.

“You turtles,” the rhino-masked man growled, “are exactly who we’ve been looking for. Prove yourselves worthy!”

Without another word, he charged. The rhino-masked man swung his massive mace in a wide arc that forced Leonardo and Donatello to dive in opposite directions. The mace smashed into the ground and cracked the cobblestones.

“Split up!” shouted Leonardo.

He rushed the rhino-masked man and parried a follow-up swing with his katanas. He strained against the tremendous force of the man’s swing. Leonardo then sidestepped and countered with a precise slash aimed at his opponent’s legs. The rhino-masked man blocked the  slash with his mace,  displaying shocking agility.

Donatello engaged the lizard-masked man, who hissed and lunged forward with his axe. Donatello spun his bo staff in a defensive whirl. He deflected the axe before thrusting the staff into the man’s ribs. The lizard-masked warrior twisted and swung his shield toward Donatello’s face. Donatello ducked just in time, sweeping low to trip his opponent.

“Not bad!” the lizard-masked man hissed.

He recovered quickly with a flourish of his axe. He leapt at Donatello, but Donatello vaulted over him and struck him with the staff’s blunt end as he landed.

Leonardo exchanged rapid blows with the rhino-masked man, who wielded his mace with brute strength and versatility. He spun his mace in a deadly arc. Leonardo evaded with a backward flip, then lunged forward with a cross slash that cut his opponent’s arm.

“Strong, but not enough!” the rhino-masked man roared.

The rhino-masked man slammed down his mace to the ground again to knock Leonardo off balance.. Leonardo sidestepped and retaliated with a slash at the man’s exposed side. The attack forced the big man to stumble.

Donatello outmaneuvered the lizard-masked man with sharp, disorienting blows. The lizard-masked man retaliated with a powerful shield rush. Donatello spun away, and caught his foe in the jaw with a sharp upward strike.

Seeing his ally falter, the rhino-masked man charged Donatello, but Leonardo intercepted with a sliding kick and toppled the giant man. With a nod to one another, Leonardo and Donatello coordinated a flurry of strikes that overwhelmed their opponents.

Breathing heavily, the rhino-masked man raised a hand.

“Enough! You’ve proven yourselves.”

The lizard-masked man wiped blood from his lip.

“The stories were true,” he stated. “You may be the ones. Heroes... worthy enough to challenge him.”

Leonardo sheathed his blades. “Huh? Who are you talking about?”

The rhino-masked man didn’t answer, instead he pulled out a map adorned with an insignia of an owl’s head. Below it, the name “Olcadan” was scrawled in ornate script. He handed it to Leonardo.

“Find him. If you dare.”

The two warriors disappeared into the shadows.

What was that about?” Donatello wondered.

Back at the lair, Michelangelo twirled nunchaku and Raphael sparred with a punching bag. When Leonardo and Donatello entered, Raphael raised an eyebrow.

“Took you two long enough. You stop for pizza?”

“Not exactly,” Leonardo said.

He recounted their encounter with the masked warriors and held up the map.

“They gave us this.”

Michelangelo scratched his head. “That rhino dude... think he’s connected to Rocksteady?”

“Doubt it,” Leonardo responded. “It wasn’t a real rhinoceros head. But this name, Olcadan, sounds vaguely familiar.”

“Doesn’t ring any bells for me,” said Raphael.

Master Splinter, who had been meditating, stood abruptly when he heard the name.

“Olcadan?” he whispered. “Can it really be?”

“You know the name?” Donatello asked.

Splinter retrieved a dusty book. He flipped through its pages until he found an illustration of a man with an owl’s head.

“Legend tells of a man named Olcadan who many centuries ago mastered every kind of fighting art. So skilled he was that he never lost and had only one draw. In his desire to grow stronger he decided to challenge the gods. He defeated a messenger of the god of war, Ares, who came in the form of an owl. In a fit of rage over his messenger’s defeat, Ares turned Olcadan's head into an owl. To earn Ares’ favor, a group of sorcerers, the Sages of the Oak, captured Olcadan and delivered him to Ares. Ares banished Olcadan into an ancient ruin beneath the earth where he would remain for over 100 years. Olcadan was freed and briefly returned to help train a new generation of heroes when a cursed knight threatened to drown the world in darkness before disappearing into a labyrinth in the old Mughal Empire to never be seen again perpetually waiting for a worthy challenge.”

“What a fascinating story,” Donatello remarked.

“And this map leads to that labyrinth in the story?” Michelangelo asked with excitement.

“It is possible,” Splinter admitted. “Although I had always believed it to be mere myth.”

Leonardo clenched the map. “All of the things we have seen I don’t think we could rule it out as true.” He looked to his brothers. “I want to check it out. If this Olcadan exists, he could be a great test for us to see how far we’ve come.”

The turtles followed the map halfway across the world to the Indus River Basin, where they discovered a sprawling labyrinth of stone corridors and traps. As they navigated its twists and turns, they found themselves separated into groups of two.

Michelangelo and Raphael encountered two masked women. One with a red mask wielded dual kodachi blades and the other in a green mask wielded two elbow bladed tonfas.

“The other turtles have earned passage here, you have not,” The red masked woman declared.

The two women attacked with speed and precision to test the abilities of Michelangelo and Raphael.

Elsewhere, Leonardo and Donatello entered a grand chamber, where Olcadan awaited. The owl-headed warrior sat next to a wall lined with ancient weapons. He stood up as they approached.

“It is commendable you have made it this far,” stated Olcadan. “Let us hope it does not turn out to be a waste of your time and mine.”

“I have to say this is all pretty cool,” said Donatello.

“Do you wish to attack me together?” asked Olcadan.

Leonardo shook his head. “No. Just as you want to fight the best. So do we as individual ninjas.”

“I see.”

Just as Leonardo was about to lay down the challenge himself, Olcadan took note of Donatello’s weapon.

“A bo staff,” Olcadan called out. “It has been centuries since I last saw one wielded with true skill. You, turtle, could you be as talented as one of my greatest students, Kilik?”

Olcadan lifted a polished purple staff from the rack.  Its surface was etched with intricate runes. It was once Kilik’s Amud staff. “This one should do. It matches the color of your mask. It has been too long since I’ve had to wield it seriously,”

His golden eyes locked onto Donatello. “Defeat me, and it is yours.”

Donatello glanced at Leonardo, who nodded. Donatello stepped forward and gripped his staff tightly.

“I accept,” he declared with a steady voice.

Olcadan twirled the staff with effortless grace.

“Good. Let us begin.”

I am going to go with IDW Donatello, considering the quality of experience he's acquired.

He has acquired high quality experience from fighting Foot Ninja, Mutants, Triceratons, the Ghostbusters and Ghosts, The Earth Protection Agency and its Government Agents, LITERAL GODS in the form of Chi-You, Kitsune, Manmoth, Rat King, and learned Kuji-Kiri powers under the Shredder that allows him to briefly stop time... not to mention stopping a timeline devouring Quantum Shark named Armaggon...

Yeah... Plenty of good reasons to go with IDW Donatello here.
