Long before human records could capture their essence, Orochi and Azazel, primordial beings of unimaginable power, clashed over the right to shape the world. Orochi, the embodiment of nature's wrath, sought to cleanse humanity and return the Earth to its primal state. Azazel, a frightening figure of destruction born from humanity's corruption, saw the chaos of human sin as fuel for its existence. Their war scorched the earth, bending the fabric of reality, and shattered civilizations that would later be lost to time.

Legends whisper of a stalemate brokered by forces unknown, where both beings were sealed away, their powers locked within humanity itself. Orochi’s essence was divided among the Hakkesshu, loyal servants who carried its will, while Azazel’s legacy splintered into fragments, most notably the Devil Gene, which cursed certain bloodlines.

PRESENT DAY

Reina stumbled to her feet, her vision was blurry and her body ached. The battlefield of the climactic clash between G Corporation and the allies united to stop Kazuya Mishima lay in ruins around her. Devil Kazuya’s dark crimson wings stretched across the smoky sky. His mocking laughter echoed from above as Reina clenched her fists. Her body still bore the brunt of his Devil Beam, a devastating attack from the skies she had miraculously survived. Reina had put herself in its direct path hoping for a reaction that did not occur.

Reina shouted and punched the ground in frustration.

“Why didn’t it activate?”

Despite enduring a blast powerful enough to annihilate entire armies, her Devil Gene remained dormant.

Kazuya departed the battlefield with smug satisfaction and Reina was no closer to her goal.

As she dragged herself off the battlefield, Reina vowed to find a way. She refused to accept that she would not be able to unleash the Devil Gene within her.

Days later, Reina sat in a darkened library surrounded by dusty tomes and ancient scrolls. She gathered everything she could that related to Azazel, the forebearer and creator of the Devil Gene.  Her research into Azazel’s history led her to a fascinating discovery, the ancient war with Orochi. Perhaps tapping into this ancient rivalry would provide the needed spark within her. Reiana read up on the Hakkesshu, on Rugal, Goenitz, Shermie, Chris, and Yashiro. She was disappointed to learn that they were all presumed to be dead. Still, there was one name repeatedly mentioned that grabbed her interest, Iori Yagami. He was a temperamental young man cursed with Orochi blood and susceptible to an uncontrollable power  known as the Riot of the Blood.

Reina’s lips curled into a smirk as an idea took root in her mind. “If I can trigger that riot within him, it might be the key to awakening my own Devil Gene.”

Elsewhere, Iori Yagami crushed a flyer in his hand, his crimson eyes burned with frustration. He had just learned that the music gig he was in the running for was instead given to  the group CYS: Chris, Yashiro, and Shermie. Losing the gig was bad enough, but the reveal that the long thought dead servants of Orochi were alive and kicking was much worse.

“They’re supposed to be dead,” he muttered to himself.

Memories of his past battles with the trio gnawed at his mind.

Determined to see if it was actually them, he stormed into the venue. The crowd roared  around him as CYS performed on stage. Chris's angelic voice, Yashiro's commanding guitar riffs, and Shermie's hypnotic synths filled the air. It was actually them. Somehow they had returned from the dead.

Iori watched from the shadows until his fury boiled over. He stormed out into the back alley and smashed his fist into the brick wall. He knew he would have to fight them once again, and he knew that it also meant he would most likely have to team up with Kyo Kusanagi once more. A fate worse than death.

Reina had been tailing Iori and followed him through the venue and into the back alley. She approached cautiously and she shifted her demeanor  into a playful facade to catch him off guard.

“Excuse me, Mr. Yagami!” she chirped with an innocent smile. “I’m a huge fan of King of Fighters. I’ve been training to compete myself. It’d be such an honor to fight you!”

Iori barely glanced at her. “Get lost child! I don’t have time for your games.”

Iori offhandedly fired off a purple flame at Reina’s feet. Her expression soured as he brushed past her and headed back into the venue to confront CYS.

Reina frowned. It was clear she would not be able to egg on an encounter the same way she had Jin Kazama. A more direct approach was required.

Before she could act, two figures formed straight from the shadows and stood before her. Two women, one a blonde with the coldest blue eyes this side of Nina Williams and the other a woman with short maroon hair and wild red eyes. They were both dressed in button up business tops with long black skirts.

The blonde was the first to speak.  “Oh, look at this one, Vice. Another lost little girl sniffing around Iori.”

The other woman sneered.  “And her blood... it reeks of Azazel’s stink. That pathetic little monster. Disgusting.”

Reina stepped back, she recognized them. She had read about them. Mature and Vice were secretaries to Rugal Bernstein and servants of Orochi. But, there was one problem.

“I thought I read that you two were dead,” stated Reina. “Did Iori not kill both of you?”

Mature chuckled. “Death is such a temporary inconvenience. Have you not noticed the veil between life and death is thinning?”

Vice leaned closer with a widening grin. “Here’s the thing: Iori’s ours to haunt and pester. You don’t get to mess with him.”

Reina’s frustration boiled over. “Get out of my way or be crushed! I have bigger plans than dealing with you two has-beens.”

Vice’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Oh, I like her, Mature. Mind if I play with her?”

Mature waved dismissively. “Have fun. I’ll keep an eye on Iori. I’ll see what he is planning for Chris and his little friends.”

Vice stepped forward and cracked her knuckles.

“You’ve got a vicious streak. Let’s see if you can back it up.”

Reina smirked and shifted into her fighting stance.

“By the end of this, you will submit to me.”

Vice laughed. Her voice dripped with malice. “Submit to you? Foolish girl, I’m going to eat you alive, bones and all.”

I have wanted to put Reina in a match since the release of Tekken 8. Couldn't think of a good opponent until the release of the last DLC for KOF XV when I was reminded of the other short haired sadistic and strong sociopath who has connections to an ancient evil and really, really enjoys dragging their opponents across the ground.

Reina doesn't have enough story to really know what she's been doing all this time. She didn't even impress me in the storymode movie. I have to go with Vice just on the principle that she's more accomplished.
