Chapter 45: Chaos in the Streets

Waking up in a daze, Everly crawled into a filthy bathroom. A bright light shined down on her naked body. She stretched out her hand and reached for a laundry hamper nearby. Pulling out some dirty old clothes, the woman covered herself before turning her eyes toward the toilet. The floors and the walls shook with a pounding from outside. From another room, she could hear a group of men arguing amongst themselves. The dark-haired woman climbed up to the toilet seat and reached to the back of the tank. She stopped for a moment so that her eyes could adjust to the light in the room. Taking a deep breath, she reached into the back of the toilet. She felt a wet plastic bag submerged in the water behind the tank and sighed as she slowly removed the bag from behind the toilet. Sitting back against the seat, she looked over contents inside the wet clear bag. Within the bag there was a small gold necklace, a gun, and a phone.

The sounds of the arguing men grew louder as the pounding outside grew more intense. Everly leaned over the sink while pulling the phone out of the bag. While waiting for the phone to come on, Everly glanced back at the door. The bickering men that were outside had started slamming against the door. Everly reached back into the bag and took out the necklace. She opened up a small locket on the necklace saw s picture of a young child. She then reached back in the bag for the pistol. As the phone came on, Everly's heart sank once she saw that there was no signal. Tossing the phone aside, the dark-haired woman leaned down over the toilet bowl. With tears in her eyes, she trembled as she pointed the gun over her head. The door busted open and a large man appeared in the doorway. Everly quickly pointed the pistol at the man and shot him between the eyes.

With her strength returning, the dark-haired woman stood up and walked around the pool of blood that was spread across the tile floor. She sauntered out of the filthy bathroom and down the hallway. The floors and walls continued to shake as the pounding from outside grew even more intense. While Everly did not know what was taking place outside this building, she had her mind focused on something else entirely. She walked into a larger room that was the source of the bickering men. She lifted her pistol and immediately started opening fire upon the men. As her the barrel of her pistol moved to a different target, something caught her by surprised. Before she could put an end to the rest of these terrible men, the ceiling and one of the walls collapsed onto the men. The men were crushed under the weight of the rubble. In shock over what had taken place, Everly quietly looked out into the world that was beyond the apartment building.

Her eyes could not comprehend what they were seeing. Terrifying beasts that were the size of towers were battling each other in the streets. Before her abduction and life in Armando Barillo's control, she remembered hearing the stories of giant monsters but never thought she would see them for herself. In a panic, the dark-haired woman ran to the kitchen area of the apartment. Digging through the rubble, she was able to open a cabinet inside the kitchen. Everly pulled out an ultimax 100 mark 3 machine gun. Everly looked over the large weapon before turning his eyes toward the door. This was her moment to escape her captivity. This was her moment to find her daughter and finally be reunited with her. These titans had become a blessing in disguise as they had paved the way for her freedom. Even though her freedom was right outside that door and outside the awful apartment complex, she knew that Barillo had sent several people to take her out. The dark-haired woman knew that she had to fight for her freedom.

After changing clothes and arming herself with a fully loaded pistol and the massive machine gun, Everly stepped foot in the hallway. She half expected it to be filled with Barillo's hired assassins or some of the other women trapped in his trafficking ring. Despite her expectation, the hallway was clear. Everly quickly and quietly made her way toward the stairs. She glanced inside the dimly lit stairwell and saw that it was clear. The dark-haired woman ran down the stairs as fast as she could. With what was happening outside the apartment complex, everyone inside must have started to evacuate. Despite this good fortune, Everly could not let down her guard. Making her way into the ash filled streets, Everly looked up at the skies above and saw black smoke covering the clouds above. Even though it was the scene out of a horror movie, Everly felt the relief of being free from that dreadful apartment.

Her ears filled up with the screams of several panicking people. Everly sprinted away from the apartment complex. Suddenly, she heard an overpowering sound of one of the massive titans crashing into the apartment building. The shockwave of the impact caused the dark-haired woman to fall to the pavement. She glanced back and watched as a wave of dust headed her way. Everly jumped for cover while trying to make her way through a labyrinth of alleyways. Even though she was able to escape her confinement, Everly found herself not knowing what to do next. As she made her way through the different alleys, she did her best to avoid the battling giants. Knowing that there were subway tunnels close by that other women before her used as a way to escape the trafficking ring, Everly focused on making her way toward those tunnels. Hoping to not run into any trouble along the way, Everly pushed herself to move forward.

Soon, she heard voices nearby. The dark-haired woman approached the voices with caution. The voices seemed to be in distress. Although, Everly did not want to break away from her escape, she could not leave without trying to help. Her eyes widened once her gaze fell upon the source of the voices. She saw three alien creatures covered in ash and soot. One of the creatures was a crying twi'lek and another was a trembling rodian. The third one was a togruta that seemed to have more composure than the others.

"What the hell are you?" Everly asked before pointed her weapon at the strange creatures.

"We are some of the representatives of the New Republic. We were set to meet with your world's leaders before...." The togruta answered before pausing. "Before those beasts arrived."

"What are those things?" Everly demanded with her gun still aiming at the New Republic officials.

"We don't know. We were separated from the others in our efforts to escape. So many have died. Please, please help us." The togruta pleaded.

"I can't help you." Everly said while lowering the gun. "I'm sorry but I can't."

"Please. We are begging you." The twi'lek cried out.

Remembering all those cries and maons she had heard during her time in captivity, Everly paused for a moment. She sighed while glancing back at the New Republic representatives. Thinking of her daughter and her family, Everly let out a steady breath. She nodded at the aliens before her expression changed to a comforting look. She could not leave these poor creatures alone without at least trying to help.

"There are tunnels that have been used to escape the city. That is where I am heading...." Everly said before pausing for a moment. "I can take you there."

Meanwhile,

After arriving outside what was left of the apartment complex, Ajedrez scowled before looking down at her phone. With all the chaos that had transpired as a result of the kaiju attacks, the cellphone towers were down. Ajedrez had no way of communicating with her father. Even though she could not receive orders from Armando, the sadistic woman knew that her father did not want any of his women to escape the city alive. Her father specifically sent her to deal with the traitor known as Everly. Armando worked hard to spread his criminal empire across the world, and he sure was not going to allow one of the women in his possession bring harm to his organization. He had to make her an example to all in his organization. While her father could not have predicted that rampaging titans would be plaguing the city, he would not expect anything less than Everly's head on a silver platter. The sadistic daughter of Armando Barrillo made her way through the devastation that was once the great city of London.

The former DEA agent had heard of a tunnel system that other individuals being trafficked in her father's criminal empire tried to use in their escape attempts. Ajedrez shook her head and scoffed before heading in the direction of the subway system. She had a submachine gun in her hands while trying to get to the subway tunnels as fast as her legs could take her. Despite having to evade the battling kaiju and dodging falling debris, the double agent saw that she was close to the entrance. A sadistic smile formed across her cheeks once her dark brown eyes caught sight of the woman that tried to betray her father. Her smile soon faded once she saw that Everly was being accompanied by creatures not from this world. Remembering the news surrounding Earth's leaders meeting with representatives from another galaxy, Ajedrez realized that Everly must have been helping them escape the city.

With smoke and dust in the air, Ajedrez could not get a clear shot. Thinking of a way to draw out her father's traitor, a devious smile formed across the former DEA agent's face. While she may not have been able to get a clear shot, she could try to lure Everly closer to her so that she could have some fun with her before taking her out.

"Oh Everly, is that you? My father is very disappointed in you!" Ajedrez shouted before starting to giggle. "He is going to have so much fun with your daughter!"

Everly stopped short of the subway tunnel and paused for a moment. The New Republic leaders glanced back at the woman that had helped them reach the tunnels. They could see the concern in her face.

"Follow the tunnels. Get out of the city." Everly said before turning her eyes away from the aliens.

"You cannot leave us!" The twi'lek pleaded.

"This is something that I have to do!" Everly argued. "Follow the tunnel and get out of here."

Everly ran and took cover behind a vehicle that was flipped on its side. She looked out and saw the outline of Armando's sadistic daughter walking in the dust-filled air. Ajedrez took cover behind a chunk of debris that was lying in the street. Everly squinted her eyes and scowled before getting ready to face off against her enemy.

**************************

This takes place during the events of kaiju battles that have occurred earlier in the arc. Before the events of this story, Armando Barillo was going to have Everly killed for betraying the organization and trying to escape. After the titans attacked, Everly was able to escape into the streets for London. She met up with some of the leaders of the New Republic and helped them escape to some underground tunnels. Meanwhile, Armando's daughter was sent to eliminate Everly and make her an example to anyone else hoping to escape from her father's human trafficking operation.

Everly is armed with an ultimax 100 mark 3 machine gun and a pistol.

Ajedrez is armed with a submachine gun and a pistol.

Great matchup and addition to your story. It is great to see the mix of more grounded characters with all the crazy kaiju battles. The fight we were deprived of because of Carolina's death before Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Was originally going to lean Ajedrez because of agent training, but Everly survived several trained killers in her movie and Ajedrez kind of fits the MO of what she has fought before with her sadistic tendencies. Give me Everly for the win.
