Chapter 46: Battle over the Grid

With what limited access they had to communication, Bill Buchanan was able to get a message sent out to Jack Bauer, the main Director of CTU back in the United States. Hoping that Jack would have an easier time to access government networks to search for available resources, Bill sent an encrypted message to Jack. After the devestation that was caused, government agencies from all over the globe would pressed with their resources in their attempts of rescue and recovery operations. Despite knowing the limited resources that would be available, Bill felt that it would be of the utmost importance to have an agent with some field experience meet Chloe at the power grid as backup in the event that she faced an opposing threat. Even though he was able to send out the message to Jack, Bill was unable to receive a response. He hoped that Jack would be able to come through in finding a field operative to help Chloe in her attempts of restoring power to the grid.

In Washington D.C.,

Government agencies through Washington were in disarray. The phone did not stop ringing and the alerts continued to ravage the offices spread out through the capitol of the United States. At CTU headquarters, Jack was meeting with Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Abe Sapien of the B.P.R.D. Coulson was working tirelessly trying to get a status on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Director while Abe was trying to find out the source of the kaiju attacks. While Jack was overseeing the rescue and recovery operations being conducted by CTU and other agencies stationed in London, he saw the message that was being sent to him by Bill Buchanan. “Damnit.” Jack muttered while looking over the message from Bill. Despite receiving the message, he could not send a message to his friend. Bauer rubbed his hands against his face before walking toward a computer. While he knew that Chloe going to the grid was necessary in restoring power, he feared for her safety.

Even though Chloe may have accompanied him on an assortment of ground operations in the past, her experience in the field was extremely limited. Chloe was far more geared to the computer aspect of the job. Despite her knowledge extending to the power grid and possibly getting it back up and running, Jack knew all too well that their enemies would take the opportunity to make sure that the power grid stayed down. After using the CTU and S.H.I.E.L.D.  mainframe to pull up a list of field operatives located in the area, Jack rubbed the back of his head while his eyes glanced over the list of contacts. Knowing that was of the essence, Jack assigned his staff of analysts to try and get in contact with what operatives would be available in the area. Despite the limited access, one of his analysts was able to get in contact with the Special Agent-in-Charge of the NCIS: Hawaiʻi Field Office, who was there on a murder case.

Outside of London,

Jane could not believe the reports that were coming through the different news networks. The destruction in London was devastating to say the least. Even the agents that she was working with on her current investigation were being pulled from the field. Even though she was on an assignment in the investigation into the murder of a Naval officer, she was expecting a call to assist with rescue and recovery in London itself. While she continued to look over the updates regarding the kaiju attacks on London, the Special Agent-in-Charge of the Hawaii office received a call from an unknown number Washington D.C. Tennant expected it to be from one of the higher ups in the NCIS organization. Much to her surprise, the call came from the Director of the Counter Terrorism Unit.

“Jane Tennant, my name is Jack Bauer, and I am the Director of CTU. I am reaching out to you because I need your help.”

Jane almost smiled while walking over to a desk. She had heard some of the stories revolving around Jack and his exploits. The NCIS agent never would have thought she would have gotten a call from the seasoned field operative of CTU.

“What can I do for the famous Jack Bauer?” Jane asked.

“As you are probably aware, London has been hit by a series of titan attacks. There are search and rescue efforts underway as we speak. Agencies and operatives from branches all over the world are being pulled in a multitude of directions. Right now, one of my top analysts in the CTU London branch is trying to restore power to the grid.”  Jack replied before pausing for a moment. “I need you to assist her with those operations.”

“Jack, I am flattered that you would call upon me to help but I am not an analyst. I am not a technician. I am the Special Agent-in-Charge of the NCIS branch in Hawaii. I am here in a joint operation to investigate the murder of a Naval officer.” Jane responded.

“I understand, Agent Tennant. I am not asking you to assist with restoring power. My analyst is more than capable of getting the power restored. I am afraid that our enemies will be trying to make sure that the power is not restored. I need an agent with field experience that can provide support in the event that she is met by one or more of our nation’s enemies.” Jack replied.

Jane let out a steady sigh before turned her eyes back to the television screen. With the reports continuing to pile in regarding the devastation, the NCIS agent shook her head.

“Send me the coordinates for the grid.” Jane responded.

At the power grid,

Chloe’s hand trembled as she pointed her gun out in the shadows. Even though she knew that there was a possibility that she would run into an enemy force while trying to get the grid restored, Chloe was still overcome by fear. Despite knowing that Bill was going to get a call out for reinforcements, Chloe wondered if she would have to try and face down this threat herself. While her hand continued to tremble, she looked over the pistol in her hand once again. She made she that there was a bullet in the chamber before trying to make her way toward cover. As quickly and as quietly as she could, Chloe made her way toward a gate area in the facility. She thought about yelling for help, but she did not know if this assassin murdered any of the power grid employees. Her heart started racing as she made her way closer toward the gated area.

Chloe grunted as the breath in her lunges escape from her mouth as a sharp pain formed in her stomach. The CTU analyst dropped her pistol as she fell to her knees. Her mind quickly started to process what had just taken place. She slowly looked up to see the curly blonde woman standing above her. Lori had come around a corner and unleashed a powerful kick to Chloe’s stomach. A devious smile was plastered on the soft cheeks of the curly blonde woman as she gazed down upon Chloe O’Brian. The CTU analyst grunted as she tried to get to her feet. Before she could stand up, Lori punched her across the face and then kicked her legs out from beneath her.

“What the hell?!” Chloe scoffed before pushing herself against a wall.

“I told you that I would have made it quick, but you wanted to make it difficult.” Lori said with a smile.

“I am trying to do what is right. Millions of lives are at stake.” Chloe pleaded.

Lori rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Not my problem.” The assassin replied before reaching for her pistol that was located on a holster on her lower back.

As the assassin was reaching for her pistol, Chloe used all the strength that she had to jump for her gun. Before she could reach her weapon, the curly haired woman shot her twice in the back. Chloe’s body went cold as she struggled to breath. Lori rolled her over to look her in the eyes. The assassin put her pistol back in her holster before looking deep into Chloe’s eyes.

“I was really hoping that you would have been a little more challenging. It might have even made this assignment a little more fun.” Lori mocked her as she watched Chloe’s life slowly drift away.

Outside the facility,

After pulling up to the security checkpoint outside of the power grid in her SUV, the NCIS agent was on full alert once she realized that no one came out to greet her from the security station. Jane Tennant stepped out of her vehicle and walked up to the security gate. Her eyes widened once she saw the bodies of multiple security personnel. The NCIS agent got back into her car and drove through the gate. She raced to the entry of the facility. Jane quickly got out of the vehicle and ran to the trunk. She threw the bulletproof vest over her chest while getting her pistol ready for battle.

Jane made her way inside of the facility. While keeping her breathing steady, she looked down at her phone to see a photo of Chloe O’Brian. Trying to make sure that she knew friend from enemy, the agent proceeded further into the power grid facility. As she walked deeper into the facility, the agent heard the sound of two gunshots from deep within. Unsure of what to expect, the NCIS agent held her gun tight as she made her way closer to the sound of the gunshots. The lights were dim and the visibility was next to none. She was able to catch a glimpse of a woman standing over what appeared to be a body.

“Freeze!” Jane ordered while aiming her pistol at the curly haired woman.

Lori immediately jumped cover before reaching for her pistol. “I am here to help!” Lori yelled out while trying to deceive the NCIS agent.

“I think you and I both know that is bullshit!” Jane replied while eyes adjusted to the dimly lit room. Jane shook her head once she saw the clear view of Chloe O’Brian lying dead in a pool of her own blood. “Drop your weapon and come out now with your hands up!” Jane screamed while the grip on her pistol tightened.

“That is not going to happen.” Lori said while peeking out to see if she could find her next target.

“I was hoping you would say that.” Jane muttered under her beath.

****************************
This battle takes place moments after Lori’s battle with Chloe O’Brian. Chloe was able to get some of the power restored but she was killed by Lori before she could get everything back up and running. Jack Bauer found that Jane Tennant was in the area working a joint operation in a murder investigation. With the limited resources that they have due to the kaiju battles, he called Jane in to provide back up for Chloe. Jane arrived too late but is determined to put an end to Lori Quaid.

Jane Tennant is armed with a bulletproof vest and a pistol.

Lori Quaid is armed with a pistol and a concealed knife.

I watched the original NCIS until a little bit after Ziva David left, so if Jane is on par with most of those agents, I think she can take this. Although I have been entertained by Lori Quaid of all people going on a little run here.
