The World Martial Arts Arena was buzzing with visitors like never before. The air was electric with anticipation. Crowds of diverse groups filled every seat. Amidst the excited energy, a lone figure stood in contrast with his arms crossed and his trademark scowl adorned on his face.

The Prince of Saiyans, Vegeta.

Bulma walked beside him. She held Trunks’ hand as they entered the stadium grounds. The young purple haired boy practically skipped in excitement.
“Thanks for coming, Vegeta!” Bulma said cheerfully as she nudged him. “I thought you’d just sit this one out entirely since you declined to participate.”

“Hmph.” Vegeta grunted. “There was no guarantee I’d get to fight Kakarot, and I still don’t even understand what this nonsense is.”

Bulma rolled her eyes. “I told you already! It’s the Sun Wukong Invitational! A tournament where every fighter is either directly tied to the legendary Sun Wukong or comes from a world inspired by him. Doesn’t that sound cool?”

Vegeta remained unimpressed. “Who is this Sun Wukong? And what does he have to do with our world? I’ve never heard of him before.”

“Oh, come on! Journey to the West? Legendary Monkey King? It’s a classic!” Bulma exclaimed. “Honestly, Vegeta, I need to bring some more culture to your life.”

Nearby, a familiar voice rang out, loud and cheerful. “Hey guys!”

Vegeta’s head turned sharply. There was Goku, grinning ear to ear as usual, surrounded by an eclectic group of individuals.

At least a dozen people were talking animatedly with Goku in the center. Each one carried a similar aura of something wild, mischievous, and powerful.

A tall, muscular warrior in golden armor with a radiant crown leaned on a staff and smirked at Goku. “You don’t carry a staff with you?”

“I used to when I was kid,” Goku replied.

Another fighter with red circled green eyes and a mischievous grin, jabbed a thumb at himself. “I’m Wukong, the Vastyan trickster champion determined to protect Ionia. You’d probably like me, buddy. I smash stuff with my staff too!”

From behind them, a bare-chested man with glowing golden hair and red fingerless gloves flipped forward. “They call me monkey! Like the legendary king I too went on a great voyage with a monk, although my world was post-apocalyptic and covered with mechs.”

Another warrior with red and white hair and a cropped red vest swung his staff wildly. “I have the staff and the namesake. I honestly didn’t want to even come here. I'd rather be causing some mischief. But anything beats being stuck in an endless loop of fights with warriors from the Three Kingdoms era of China. Or being trapped in the Mystical Realm by Sanzang.”

A few other fighters with similar backgrounds grunted in agreement when he mentioned the name Sanzang.

Goku scratched his head and smiled sheepishly. “It’s just so amazing to meet all of you. Wow, you’re all pretty awesome. I can’t wait to fight some of you. We should also totally meet up for food after this is over!”

The group made noises of enthusiasm at Goku’s suggestion.

“Good luck to you all!” Goku called as the group began to disperse, headed into the stadium to prepare for their respective matches.

Vegeta stormed over to Goku, fists clenched. “Who are all those fools? How do you know them? And what does any of this have to do with the Planet Vegeta? Some of them looked like miniature Ozarus.”

Goku shrugged. “I don’t really know them. But it’s weird, I feel connected to them somehow. Like... they’re part of me, but not.”

“That doesn’t make any sense!” Vegeta barked. He grew more agitated. “And what does this Monkey King have to do with Saiyans?”

Goku rubbed his chin. “Pretty sure there’s no connection, Vegeta. Just a coincidence.”

Before Vegeta could erupt again, a small nimbus cloud zipped past them and left a shimmering trail in its wake. Riding on it was SonSon with her staff slung across her back. She grinned as she soared through the sky.

Goku’s eyes lit up with nostalgia. “Whoa! That cloud... that’s just like my old Nimbus! Man, that’s so cool!”

Vegeta growled under his breath. He muttered something about idiots and clouds.

At another entrance to the stadium, a boisterous, flame-haired demon girl named Lirin bounced in with fists raised high. She wore a sleeveless yellow tunic with matching color asymmetrical pants. She was ecstatic, flanked by a few demonic supporters and her brother, Kougaiji.

“Lirin,” he stated, his voice firm but soft, “are you sure about this? You’re in the first match of this tournament. You know as well as I do that, they likely didn’t pair you with someone weak. A majority of the competitors are variants of Son Goku.”

Lirin grinned widely, completely unfazed by his worry. “Of course, I’m sure! This is gonna be awesome!”

She looked at her brother with confidence.

“You’re too uptight, Kou,” She teased. “And you worry too much. You know I can handle myself.”

Kougaiji sighed. He pinched the bridge of his nose. “That confidence of yours is going to be the death of me someday.” He placed a hand on her shoulder. “Just be careful, Lirin. Remember, in this tournament, no one’s going to hold back.”

“I don’t want them to!” Lirin declared. “I want a real fight! You’ll see..I’ll make you proud, Kou!

Elsewhere, Son Son rejoined her friends Ruby Heart and Amingo near the tournament preparation area.

Ruby Heart stood out in the crowd. A pirate captain through and through, she wore a blue, high-collared jacket with golden trim, adorned with puffy sleeves and a crimson sash tied at her waist. A silver cutlass hung at her side.

“This tournament better be worth the trouble, SonSon,” stated Ruby. “Do you have any idea how hard it was to find somewhere to park a flying ship around here?”

SonSon giggled. “Relax, Captain! I’ll make you proud!”

Amingo, the sentient cactus, waddled forward and conjured a tiny flower from his arm. He handed it to Son Son, his expression warm.

“Thanks, Amingo.” SonSon smiled brightly. “I’ll do my best!”

Back in the stands, Vegeta had found his seat next to Bulma and Trunks. The young boy looked up at his father eagerly.

“So, Dad, did you figure out what’s going on yet?”

Vegeta huffed. “No. And I don’t care anymore. As long as the fights are entertaining and the warriors show some real skill.”

A few rows behind Vegeta, the Sanzo Ikkou had claimed their seats.

Genjo Sanzo, the ever-grumpy monk sat with his arms folded and a cigarette dangling from his lips. “Tch. I can’t believe we’re here to cheer for Lirin.”

Sha Gojyo, the red-haired half-demon, chimed in. “Hey, we know her. Familiarity counts for something amongst all this unfamiliarity.”

“Even if she’s Kougaiji’s sister,” Hakkai added.

The green eyed healer pushed up his glasses with a smile.  Next to him, their version of Son Goku leaned forward eagerly. His eyes wide with excitement.

“Yeah, but she’s gonna be great! I bet she’ll knock her opponent out in no time!”

Sanzo groaned. “We’ll see.”

The stadium fell silent as the announcer, a tall, flamboyant man with a booming voice, stepped onto the platform. He raised a microphone to his lips.

“Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the first-ever Sun Wukong Invitational! Today, we celebrate the legendary Monkey King and the heroes inspired by his greatness!”

The crowd erupted into cheers.

“Our first fighter hails from the Hotou Castle in India! She’s a fierce demon warrior princess with the strength to shatter stone walls, she is wild, she is unpredictable, known for her raw power and fiery spirit, give it up for LIRIN!”

Lirin leapt onto the platform with a dramatic flip. She raised her fists into the air with an enthusiastic grin. The crowd erupted again as the announcer turned to the other side.

“And her opponent! The granddaughter of a legendary hero inspired by Sun Wukong. She fought alongside heroes from other worlds against the nefarious monster, Abyss. She is a warrior of incredible agility and skill who isn’t afraid to change into a large fire breathing monkey if you make her mad. Coming to the fight with her magical Ruyi Jingu Bang staff, please welcome SONSON!”

“I think I get it now!” Vegeta shouted from the stands.

SonSon bounded onto the stage atop her nimbus cloud. She flipped off it gracefully to land opposite Lirin. The two fighters faced each other as the crowd’s cheering only increased.

Lirin cracked her knuckles. “Ready to rumble?”

SonSon spun her staff. “Let’s make this a good one!”

I give this to Lirin. She is a good fighter after all. I have no idea what SonSon can do, but I'm sure Lirin can take her down.
