THE GUARDIAN CHALLENGE: EPISODE 2

Brood.jpg.062ab6918716bf090df77ce7c8f8016b.jpg

Peter Quill, clad in his trademark red jacket, stood center stage. He gripped a microphone and grinned broadly at the camera. Behind him was a sleek, high-tech studio adorned with blinking screens and a massive holographic neon logo that read “The Guardian Challenge”.

“Ladies and gentlemen, sentient beings of all shapes, sizes, and dimensions, welcome back to The Guardian Challenge! I’m your host, Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord. After the roaring success of our first episode, we’re doing it again! That’s right, another alien species, another death-defying competition, and two more brave competitors ready to fight to show you how to best deal with the scary threats heading for your neighborhood. And, also for interdimensional glory. I’m again joined by my lovely co-hosts, Gamora and Nebula!"

Gamora chuckled. "Lovely might be a stretch, but I’ll take it. Tonight’s challenge is even more intense. The alien invaders we’ll be highlighting this time are more familiar to our universe. They might be the distant and far more intelligent cousins of the Xenomorphs from our first episode. I am of course talking about the Brood. They are smart, they are deadly, they love to ingest other beings with their eggs. They operate in a hive mind under direct orders from their Queen to and they’re a perfect test for tonight’s contestants."

Nebula stood next to her sister and smirked. "I have to admit, Quill, I didn’t think this show would be worth my time, but watching the carnage last episode was… surprisingly entertaining. Let’s see if tonight’s competitors can top it."

Peter stepped forward in dramatic fashion. "Oh, I have no doubt they’ll top it. The way we have set up the challenge almost guarantees it.  Let me introduce our contestants! First up, we’ve got Rita Vrataski, also known as the Angel of Verdun. She’s a one-woman army, a master strategist, and… she’s probably died more times than I’ve lost at Dance Dance Revolution. And speaking of the arcade, Rita will be facing off against Sergeant Calhoun from the arcade staple Hero’s Duty! She’s tough as nails, has a killer aim, and is the ultimate soldier in her pixel-perfect world. Gamora, why don’t you explain to everyone watching what these ladies will have to deal with."

"Tonight’s challenge is an alien-infested battlefield inspired by a combination of the combat zones familiar to the Angel of Verdun and Sergeant Calhoun’s digital warfields,” Gamora explained. “The objective is simple: fight through waves of the Brood, retrieve the Alien Core from the central hive, and make it to the extraction point. There are traps, environmental hazards, and, of course, endless alien menaces. The twist? Both contestants can respawn an infinite number of times and readjust their strategy as they progress. This should make this challenge… interesting."

"Infinite respawns! It’s like they’re playing on God Mode," Star-Lord announced with excitement.

"Or they’re just going to die over and over again," Nebula interjected.

"Either way, it’s a test of endurance, skill, and intelligence," Gamora opined.

“Let’s find out more about these alien annihilating lovely ladies from Drax. Take it away Drax,” said Peter.

Drax stood in front of a green screen showing action shots of both contestants. The green screen shots settled on clips of Rita in action.

"Rita Vrataski was an ordinary human soldier who became humanity’s greatest weapon against the invasion of the Mimics. Using an ability to reset time every time she died, she perfected her combat skills and became a living legend. She will always put in the time and the work to succeed."

Drax shifted his position as the images behind him switched to Calhoun.

"Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun was programmed as the ultimate warrior in her world. Trained to battle endless hordes of alien bugs, she’s a leader, a fighter, and a master of advanced weaponry. Despite her tragic backstory, losing her fiancé to a Cy-Bug on her wedding day, she channels her rage into destroying anything that threatens her team. I think we would get along tremendously."

The camera cut to a split screen between Drax and the three hosts Peter, Gamora, and Nebula.

"Wow, Drax, you’re really nailing this history thing," Peter remarked.

"I always nail it," insisted Drax.

“And now let’s check in with our sideline reporters. Mantis, take it away.”

The camera focused on Mantis. She smiled brightly as she stood next to Rita. She turned to Rita with mic in hand.

"Rita, you look… intense. Are you nervous? Excited? Confused?" Mantis asked.

"A little confused, honestly,” answered Rita. “This isn’t exactly what I expected when I signed up for this, but I’ll roll with it."

"You’re so brave!” Mantis gushed. “The Brood is nasty. I see many possible futures for you in this challenge. I should say some are… very messy."

Rita Vrataski furrowed her brow. "Messy how?"

"Oh, you know… limbs, explosions, screaming. But some futures also turn out very well! You’re amazing at adapting."

Rita smirked. “Good to know."

“Good luck. I will be rooting for you,” Mantis proclaimed.

Peter Quill returned to the screen. “Thank you, Mantis. We now have our very own Nikki Gold with Sergeant Calhoun, who appears to be getting a final farewell from a loved one.”

The camera transitioned to Nikki Gold with her hair of fire standing awkwardly as Sergeant Calhoun lifted her husband in the air for a goodbye kiss for good luck.

“Go out and knock them dead. Ralph, Venelope, and I will be cheering you on in the stands,” said Felix with a broad smile.

Fix-It Felix then tipped his hat to Nikki Gold politely and scampered off.

“Was that your boyfriend?” asked a surprised Nikki.

“He is my husband,” Sergeant Calhoun corrected.

"Sergeant Calhoun, your reputation precedes you. But I must ask… how does someone as tough as you end up married to someone like Fix-It Felix?"

Calhoun scowled. "What’s that supposed to mean? Felix is brave, kind, and has saved me more times than I can count."

"He’s… tiny. And wields a hammer," replied Nikki.

"And that tiny guy has more guts than most people I’ve met,” Calhoun insisted. “Now, are we here to talk about my marriage or the fact that I’m about to crush this competition?"

Nikki Gold shrugged. "Fair enough. Love is always beautiful. Anyway, it seems you are not lacking for confidence.”

Calhoun shook her head. “Not at all.”

“Good luck, Sergeant."

For the final pre-show segment, Rocket Racoon commanded the screen. He stood in front of a table of weapons.

"Alright, let’s talk gear. Vrataski’s got her exosuit with a mounted cannon and that sweet helicopter blade sword. It has good size. It’s primitive by my standards, but effective.”

Rocket moved to the far end of the table. “Over here you can see Calhoun’s packing a plasma rifle, grenades, and armor that’s tougher than Drax’s ego.”

The split screen reappeared this time with Gamora and Rocket.

“What would you rate these armaments?” Gamora asked.

Not bad. Not bad at all. But where’s the flair? The pizzazz?" Rocket questioned.

Gamora smirked. "You mean, like, your unlicensed explosives?"

Rocket beamed. "Exactly!"

Peter Quill took control of the broadcast.  "Alright, folks, the stage is set. Two warriors, one battlefield, and a whole lot of Brood. Remember, the first to grab the Alien Core and reach the extraction point wins. Gamora, Nebula, anything to add before we launch?"

"Just that this challenge should push them to their limits," Gamora opined.

"And probably beyond," added Nebula.

"Let’s do this! Contestants, load into your pods!" Peter exclaimed.

The camera cut to Rita and Calhoun as they stepped into high-tech pods. The doors closed, and the pods launched toward the battlefield.
