Legends of the Hidden Temple: The Labyrinth of Deception

The familiar sound of a gong echoed through the air as makeshift bleachers full of intrigued and excited fans clapped dutifully. The bleachers were built on location in a dense jungle in front of a mysterious temple. The audience’s claps erupted into cheers as Kirk Fogg stepped into a large spotlight, microphone in hand. Behind Kirk, the massive stone face of Olmec loomed. His glowing eyes added a sense of mystique to the proceedings, although they appeared less inviting than usual.

“Welcome, everyone, to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Real Challenges Edition! Today, we have a very special one-on-one temple run! This version is no kids’ show. Tonight’s challenge is as real as it gets, real traps, real threats, and only one competitor will emerge victorious, possibly even alive. Let’s meet our contestants!”

The audience cheered as Kirk gestured to the left. “Representing the Silver Snakes, we have Kang Sae-byeok! Hailing from North Korea, Sae-byeok is a survivor in every sense of the word. With a sharp mind and unmatched determination, she’s here to claim the Amulet of Passage. Give it up for Sae-byeok!”

Sae-byeok stepped forward, wearing a snugly fit silver T-shirt emblazoned with the snake logo. Her piercing eyes scanned the crowd. She gave off no emotion as she gave a curt nod.

“And on the Green Monkeys team,” Kirk continued, “we have Taja! A resourceful and agile fighter and former thief living with her friends Kung Lao and Siro. Taja and her companions have dedicated their lives to protecting the earthrealm from otherworldly invaders. She’s ready to do whatever it takes to keep the obtain the amulet.  Let’s hear it for Taja!”

Taja strode confidently into the spotlight with her green team shirt on. Her fiery red hair matched her vibrant energy. Her expressive eyes gleamed with excitement. She waved to the crowd with a grin. The contrast between her and her opponent could not be starker as she clearly basked in the moment.

Kirk turned to the competitors. “Now, ladies, this is no ordinary temple run.  As described in the waivers you signed, this is as real as it gets. Traps, mercenaries, and a labyrinth designed to test every ounce of your skill and courage await you. Before we start, I have to ask: What will you do with the Amulet of Passage if you survive and claim it?”

Kirk pointed to Sae-byeok first. She took a deep breath and spoke in a deadpan tone to a nearby interpreter.

“Sae-byeok plans to sell it. The money will help her get her mother and little brother out of their terrible situation,” the interpreter announced. “They deserve a better life.”

“That sounds awful,” said Kirk. “What kind of situation are they in?”

“She does not wish to elaborate,” the interpreter answered.

The crowd murmured and Kirk nodded approvingly. “A noble cause for sure in any case. And you, Taja?”

Taja’s expression turned serious. “I can’t allow the amulet to fall into the wrong hands. Outworld traders could use it to wreak havoc. I’ll keep it safe, no matter the cost.”

Kirk blinked, visibly confused for a moment. “Uh, Outworld traders? Well, okay then! Let’s move on.” Kirk turned to Olmec. “Olmec, tell us about the labyrinth and what these ladies will face.”

Olmec’s deep, resonant voice projected to everyone. “The Labyrinth of Deception is fraught with peril. First is the Gauntlet of Shadows, where pressure-sensitive floors trigger deadly traps so you will need to move carefully. Next, you will find yourself in the Hall of Illusions, a disorienting maze of shifting walls and mirrored surfaces. Navigate through there and you will find yourself in the Corridor of Calamity patrolled by mercenaries. Stealth and strategically placed weapons will be your ally in this section. Survive and you will arrive in the Chamber of Trials, where puzzles test your wits and resolve. Finally, you will find the artifact in the Chamber of Collapse, where the ground will crumble beneath your feet as you race to claim it. Only the strongest, smartest, and most determined will succeed. Good luck, competitors.”

The crowd cheered wildly as Olmec’s eyes glowed brighter. Sae-byeok listened intently as her interpreter relayed the layout of the Labyrinth of Deception to her.

“Sounds intense, right?” Kirk remarked. “I’m glad I’m not going in there.”

Sae-byeok and Taja acknowledged each other with small nods.

“Ladies, take your positions!” Kirk announced and raised his arm.

The two women moved to the starting line; their eyes locked on the entrance of the temple.

“On my signal… Three, two, one, go!”

The gong sounded, and the competition began with both women running furiously to the entrance.

Well this is more of miss Kang's thing. I used to watch Taja's mortal Kombat tv show. I liked that show. But I don't remember her really dealing with obsticles and stuff. Mainly just fighting.

Yeah, there was a lot of fighting on that show which is why I added the mercenaries to the game, but I was more linking their pasts as thieves and adaptability to different situations.

Oh yeah! I forgot Taja was a thief! Can't believe this show is like 30 years old.

Gotta bet on Kang. This challenge favors being light footed and stealthy rather than fighting. Even the mercenary challenge shouldn’t be too difficult for Kang, as long as she sneaks past them.
