David Xanatos stood at the expansive window of his office, arms folded behind his back, gazing over the New York skyline. Behind him, his ever-loyal assistant Owen Burnett adjusted his glasses with his expression neutral as always. The conversation between them was calm and deliberate.

“I must admit,” Owen said, “there is some...potential in the Pack now. Jackal and Hyena’s cybernetic enhancements have enhanced their physical abilities beyond the scope of human limitations. Wolf, meanwhile, is a literal werewolf now, which provides strength and savagery. However, the absence of Fox and Dingo presents a considerable handicap.”

Xanatos turned away from the window to face Owen as a sly grin curled on his lips. “True, Fox has...moved on to better things. And Dingo, well, Australia is a long way from here.”

“And without them, I believe the Pack’s potential as an organized unit has diminished,” Owen concluded. “They are more...unpredictable now. Lacking discipline.”

Xanatos chuckled. “And unpredictability is precisely what makes them interesting. But I want to know exactly how capable they are in their current form. We need to test them before pitting them against Goliath’s clan again. I want to know how much of a threat they can be with the upgrades they have received.” He walked toward a computer console embedded in the wall and tapped a few buttons. On the screen, the golden visage of Coyote, his robotic stand-in, appeared. “It’s time we give them a mission.”

Owen lifted an eyebrow. “And what would that mission be?”

“Simple,” Xanatos replied. “We send the Pack into new territory and see how they perform. No Goliath, no interference from us. Just a field test.” He grinned. “And I know just the place.”

A couple of days later, The Coyote robot stood before the Pack in their underground lair. Hyena flexed her newly upgraded cybernetic arm. The sound of metallic joints hissed as her fingers twitched. Jackal leaned casually against the wall; his red cybernetic eye flickered as it scanned the briefing handed to him by Coyote. Wolf snarled impatiently. He paced around like a beast eager to be unleashed.

“There’s a prize waiting for you,” Coyote told them. “A government building in the heart of the Protectors' city. Something inside that can tip the scales for our future battles.”

Wolf bared his teeth. “Protectors? You mean those corny old fashioned dorky heroes?”

“I do indeed,” answered Coyote. “What better opponents to test out your new abilities.”

Wolf scoffed, “Those losers won’t even know what hit them.”

“That’s the idea,” Coyote replied. “Our goal is to lure them out for a fight. That is the grand prize of this mission. But, feel free to collect whatever you may deem valuable along the way.”

Hyena grinned with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Finally, some fun. I was getting bored with Goliath’s bunch anyway.”

The Pack left New York under Coyote’s direction, and headed west to lure out the heroic team, the Protectors.

Later that day, sirens blared as the Pack tore through the government building in the center of town. Jackal’s arm blaster made short work of security gates, while Hyena gleefully overloaded computer systems with malicious code. Wolf tore through the walls like a force of nature and took a moment to admire his own destruction. Coyote stood at the center of the chaos giving out direction to increase the mayhem.

Meanwhile, a silent alarm reached the Protectors’ headquarters.

“TV show heroes turned villains,” complained Philip Reinhart, former Golden Age hero and mentor to the current team. He leaned back in his chair with a grim expression. “I knew it was a mistake to let children glorify these impostors. Although I don’t remember them looking like that before.”

Beside him, the Ferret adjusted his gloves. “We can sit here and speculate, or we can go kick some cybernetic tail.”

“Ferret’s right,” said the blue masked muscular hero, Man of War.  “No sense waiting around. We’ve got to stop them before they turn the whole city into rubble.”

Rounding out the group of Protectors members was the winged warrior, Air-Man, and Fantom of the Fair, Gravestone, who agreed with the urgent call to action.

The Protectors arrived on the scene in a blur of motion and energy.  A chaotic battle erupted immediately. Man of War drew his fiery sword and charged toward Coyote. Coyote parried the first strike and shot a laser at Man of War followed by his circular ray causing hallucination and vertigo.

Meanwhile, Air Man confronted Hyena. He whipped up powerful gusts of wind to throw off her balance. She laughed maniacally, even as the wind sent her skidding across the floor.

“You call that a fight, flyboy?” she sneered.

Hyena activated her leg thrusters to counter the turbulence and launched herself at him, with claws extended.

Wolf let out a feral roar as he charged straight at Gravestone., who calmly teleported behind the werewolf and threw a punch that sent Wolf crashing into a wall. “

"You’ll have to try harder than that, beast.”

The Ferret darted through the fray. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Jackal, the lone Pack member not already engaged.

“Looks like it’s you and me, buddy,” Ferret called out as he cracked his knuckles.

An errant blast from Coyote destroyed the floor underneath them and the two fell to the basement level underneath.

Jackal quickly recovered and looked at the Ferret with a sinister grin. He flexed his metal fingers with a series of sharp clicks.

“Oh, this is going to be fun,” he declared. “I’ve been dying to try out my new upgrades. I hope for your sake you can at least hit harder than my sister.”

“You won’t be disappointed,” the Ferret shot back.

Both of these characters are vicious, so this is probably going to end with one of them laid out on the floor completely battered. Who will it be? Well, I want to say it's going to be the Jackal. The Ferret isn't that impressive, he's basically a castrated Wolverine. Jackal isn't *that* impressive either, but I'll give him the benefit of doubt due to the universe he finds himself in.

I'm going to go with the Ferret.

Mostly on account that as far as Malibu is concerned, he's canonically fought with E.Honda, the same E.Honda of Street Fighter fame-- as canonically, The Protectors and Street Fighter shared the same universe.

This was before Capcom revoked the license from Malibu Comics on account that they didn't like the comic (let's face it, it was terrible) and they didn't like what they did to Ken Masters when he was scalped by Sagat.

My vote is for Ferret. I had the whole Protectors series. Ferret didn't really do a lot, but it was at least implied that he was pretty dangerous. And he's more stable than Jackle which might be where he tips the scale.

Good set-up, Johnny. Good story, and it looks like a good matchup.

Information on the Ferret's abilities is pretty scant, though (aside from general descriptions of them being at "animal-like" levels), so I personally can't say how he'd fare against Jackal's cybernetic enhancements.
