FEAST OR FAMINE

The scent of roasted meats, fresh-baked bread, and buttery seafood filled the air as Jewelry Bonney leaned back on her captain’s chair. It was a rickety throne cobbled together from mismatched planks and crates, but it still commanded respect. The Bonney Pirates' camp sprawled across the sandy clearing of a remote island, one of those unnamed dots on the map that pirates loved for hiding loot and roasting boars without Marine interference.

Bonney, with her pink hair tied in a messy ponytail, gnawed on a drumstick with carnivorous glee.

"This," she declared through a mouth full of meat, "is the life. Big scores, bigger feasts, and absolutely zero problems."

Her crewmates cheered around the bonfire. They clinked their mugs in celebration. Nearby, a ship quietly anchored just beyond the rocks, the vessel of the Lillien Knights had arrived in search of their next score.

Bonne Jenet stood at the helm. Her golden locks fluttered in the sea breeze. She pulled on her captain’s hat. With one hand on her hip, she used the other to gesture dramatically to her crew.

"Treasure. Right. There," she proclaimed.

She pointed toward a makeshift fort near the Bonney Pirates' camp. "And they're too busy stuffing their faces to notice. Classic amateurs."

"Captain, are we really stealing from people having a feast?" her cook, Remy, asked as he adjusted his bandana. "Feels wrong. Like taking candy from a kid."

Jenet smirked. "Exactly. Easy, breezy, beautiful. Now move!"

Back at Bonney’s camp, two of her crewmates finished off their plates, Potato and Gyogyo.

"We’re outta roast pig," Gyogyo grunted.

Jewelry’s eyes widened. “Do something about it.”

Potato sighed. "Fine, we’ll go check the stash."

They trudged toward the fort, and laughed about their captain, “The Big Eater”. That laughter died when they rounded the corner and found half a dozen Lillien Knights hauling treasure into sacks.

Potato blinked. "Uh, Gyogyo? Pretty sure those aren’t our guys."

Jenet, already sitting on a barrel of gold coins, perked up. "Well, well! New friends!"

She hopped down, hands on her hips, striking a pose that practically sparkled under the moonlight.

"Handsome and observant. You boys guarding this treasure all by yourselves?"

Gyogyo was confused. "Are you trying to flirt with us while robbing us?"

"Multi-tasking. A woman of many talents." Jenet leaned in and batted her eyelashes. "But, if you’re feeling generous, maybe you forget you saw us, and I’ll make sure to find a way to express my gratitude."

Gyogyo scratched his head. "What kinda gratitude we talkin' here?"

"Gyogyo!” Potato snapped. "We’re pirates, not idiots!"

"Speak for yourself," Gyogyo muttered.

His eyes drifted toward Jenet’s smile, oblivious to the other Lillien Knights who walked away with their treasure.

"Oi!" came a new voice. "Where's the grub?!"

Bonney herself stormed onto the scene with her hands on her hips. "I send you two idiots for food, and I find you drooling over some frilly girl pirate?"

Jenet gasped. "Frilly? Honey, this is couture."

Bonney ignored her as her eyes turned to notice the half-emptied fort.

"Wait a damn minute. Where’s the rest of my treasure?!"

"Long gone, darling," Jenet grinned. She spun a gold coin between her fingers. "But you’re welcome to donate more."

Bonney’s face darkened. "This was one of our first big scores! Months of raiding, brawling, and barely scraping by!" She pointed an accusatory finger at Jenet. "You’re not leaving with that treasure."

"Captain!" one of Jenet’s men shouted. He peeked around the corner of the fort. "We… uh… have company."

And there they were, Bonney’s full crew, stomping toward the fort with cutlasses drawn. From the opposite side, the rest of the Lillien Knights emerged. Their weapons glinted under the moonlight. Tension crackled in the air. Until…

"Wait!" Remy, Jenet's cook, stepped forward. He waved his spatula like a white flag. "Look, I overheard your crew was on the lookout for more food, right? I’ll cook you a feast. Real delicacies. You’ll forget all about this treasure business."

Bonney snorted. "Forget the treasure for a feast? All my men are chefs. What need do I have for your cooking?"

Remy grinned. "None of your chefs are from South Town. I can make dishes none of your men have ever seen with ingredients you can’t get when you spend all your time out at sea."

Bonney paused. She did not want to relinquish her treasure, but this was a tempting offer tailor made for her.

"Absolutely not!" Jenet cut in. "We’re not bribing them with dinner. This is about pride!"

She stepped to Jewelry Bonney. "One-on-one. You and me. And if you win..…you get your treasure back and the feast. But when I win, we get to sail off richer and you get nothing but the knowledge of losing to the superior pirates."

Bonney’s eyes sparkled. "You’re on, frills."

Within moments, both crews got to work. Crates were pushed aside, torches were lit, and a makeshift fighting ring formed from barrels and rope was created. Bonney rolled her shoulders, and cracked her knuckles, while Jenet stretched dramatically.

"Hope you’re ready to eat sand," Bonney taunted.

Jenet blew a kiss. "Sand is all you will have left to chew on after my victory."

The crews cheered as the two pirate captains squared off with treasure, pride, and dinner on the line.
