Chicago,

Sometimes it would be months, maybe even years before that phone would ring and she would hear the voice of her former commanding officer. She was used to it. Reacher would only reach out when he needed something. Usually when Reacher needed something, it involved a deadly plot or conspiracy of some kind. After every bit trouble she would find herself in with Reacher, Neagley would have no other choice but to move on with her life. Her security consulting firm was always there waiting after every misadventure that she shared with her friend and ally. Despite Reacher's unusual adventures and inconvenient times of reaching out, Neagley was always willing to help. She also found ways to pick up from where she left off with her life and with her business. That was part of it. Part of being a friend to Reacher and part of being one of the 110th Special Investigators meant that she would have to pick up the pieces after one of these unique reunions with her former commanding officer.

Even though it had been some time since Reacher's last call, Neagley did not let that take away from her job. During a conference meeting with a potential client, the former Special Investigator found herself overcome with boredom. The same mundane routine of looking into a client's competitors or even investigating infidelity of a spouse proved quite lacking for the retired Master Sergeant. While she did not particularly enjoy being shot at or having to evade assassins, Neagley longed for the adventures that were sure to come when Reacher called her up.

As she and her business partner listened to their potential client's concerns about a security breach in their company, Neagley felt her phone vibrating. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her personal phone. At first, she thought it would be her father giving her a call, but once she looked over the unknown number she quickly came to the realization that it was Reacher. Neagley glanced at her partner and nodded before excusing herself from the room. Looking over the area code, she saw that the call was coming from New York. She could not help but wonder what her former commanding officer found himself in this time. Walking into the hallway, she pressed the screen on her device to answer the phone.

"What is it, Reacher?"

"I need you to look into a company for me. I am texting you this info now." Reacher replied without much emotion.

"Yeah, I am doing great. Thanks for asking." Neagley said sarcastically.

"I figured you answered the phone so that would mean that you are alive. You concluded that I was calling from an unknown number so your mind is still intact." Reacher replied unapologetically.

"Well, you are one of two people in the world that have my personal number."

"I could have been a telemarketer." Reacher responded.

"You could have but most show up as spam calls." Neagley replied before changing the subject. She glanced over the screen and then put the phone back to her ear. "I will look into them. What is going on?"

"I don't know yet. I will be in touch with you in a couple of days." Reacher replied before hanging up the phone.

Neagley stared down at the text while making her way toward her computer. From countless articles, she could see that this company that Reacher wanted her to look into was a humanitarian organization. By all accounts, this human rights organization appeared to be legitimate. From providing aide for refugees in war-torn countries to bring supplies to poverty-stricken nations. Neagley could not see anything out of the ordinary. In fact, she started to question why Reacher would even want her to look into an organization such as this. That feeling quickly faded after remembering all of Reacher's hunches in the past. There had to be something there.

After calling on a few of her contacts, Neagley was greeted by one of the assistants in the office. He was taking a lunch order for everyone. At first, the former special investigator ignored the young man but after her associate walked into the room, Neagley finally relented with an answer for her lunch order.

"Cereal. Puff, loops, or flakes. In that order. Also, a milkshake. Chocolate." Neagley said sternly before looking back at her screen.

The assistant glanced at her then at her associate. The associate nodded his head and the assistant left the room.

"You know, I still don't understand you, Neagley."

"Why is that?" Neagley asked without looking away from her screen.

"You live in Chicago. Some of the best food in the world. From pizza and Italian food, to sandwiches that are world famous..." The associate said with a chuckle. "And you want breakfast cereal."

"And a milkshake." Neagley replied swiftly.

"You also walked out of our meeting with what could have been a major client."

"They were not interested in our services. I figured that out within the first 30 seconds of the meeting. My time was being wasted and a call came in that proved much more interesting." Neagley responded bluntly.

"How do you figure?" The associate asked with a puzzled look.

"Body language. They were not asking specific questions, only general. I could tell that they continued to circle back to pricing. They don't need our services, not really. They were simply trying to get information."

The associate stood quietly for a moment before exhaling. "So, what do they want?"

"Not sure, don't care." Neagley replied.

"What are you looking into that is so important?" The associate asked with a puzzled look.

"Nothing that should be concerning to you." Neagley replied.

Before the associate could respond, Neagley received a message from one of her contacts. The message directed her to look deeper into the grandfather of the human-rights organization's director, specifically her grandfather. After doing some deep dives into the history of the man, she found information that was quite troubling. The director's grandfather was a former Nazi Colonel that was responsible for carrying out unspeakable war crimes. He had fled after the war.

After finding this information, some of the organization's true acts started to unravel. From trafficking to mass murder, it was despicable. The humanitarian side of it was only a front. Neagley pulled out her phone and was about to call Reacher before the assistant walked in with a bowl of cereal and a chocolate milk shake. After he placed it down in her desk, Neagley looked back at the screen.

"What did you get yourself into this time, Reacher?" Neagley muttered to herself before reaching for a spoon and scooping up some puffs.

New York,

Standing alongside a group of men, Nina watched as her grandfather's limousine approached. She could barely contain herself as she was excited to share the latest news on their organization's recent dealings. As the limousine came to a stop, she signaled for her men to help her elderly grandfather out of the back of the vehicle. Looking over his wrinkled face, she could see that he was not impressed by his surroundings. A large smile formed across Nina's cheeks as she leaned down to embrace her grandfather. Pushing his wheelchair, she took a deep breath before attempting to share the news over the recent developments. Before she could speak, her grandfather cut her off in a cold and gravelly voice.
"Your incompetence has proven itself time and time again."

Nina's smile faded as puzzled expression fell over her face. "What?"

"Of course, you do not know. Someone has been asking questions. There has been information found out about us that I do not intend to let be known!"

With a gentle gulp and a steady exhale of air, Nina reluctantly looked into her grandfather's eyes. "What do you want me to do?"

"Personally see to it that this person that is asking questions is dealt with." Struker replied while coughing into a handkerchief. "And Nina?"

"Yes, grandfather." Nina said while trying to regain her composure.

"If you fail me, then I am afraid that being my granddaughter will only protect you for so long." Struker warned with cold and emotionless eyes.

Chicago

The sun had long set and most businesses were closing down for the night. Most of the bars and streets were empty. For the most part, it was a quiet night. In fact, for a city such as Chicago, it was boring. The uneventful night would soon turn itself around in only a matter of moments.

A dark, unmarked car pulled up outside of a building that was home to a private investigation firm. Inside the vehicle, a pale woman with light blonde hair pulled out a computer and opened it up. After typing something into the computer, she glanced outside to see the traffic light and street lamps turn off. A small smirk formed on the side of her cheek once she realized that security cameras and traffic devices had been disabled in the area.

Reaching for a compartment in the vehicle, she opened the lid to reveal a pistol sitting inside of it. The blonde woman took the weapon out of the compartment and then proceeded to put a bullet in the chamber. After loading her weapon, she then reached down for a silence to attach to the end of the pistol. The blonde woman then reached down for a Sai and strapped it into a sheath that was attached to her lower leg.

With a cold and unapologetic glared, she looked over at the building's entrance. Without a second thought, Nina stepped out of the car and headed toward the private investigation firm. She kept the pistol concealed until she walked through the doors. The cruel blonde woman sauntered through the hallways and made her way toward the offices for the private investigation firm. With a single thought and a single goal in mind, she made her way toward the office of Frances Neagley.

Neagley's office

Sitting alone in her office, Neagley continued her research into that human-rights organization. The more she uncovered, the angrier she became. No wonder Reacher was looking into this place. Part of her hoped that her former commanding officer would call upon her to assist him with taking this place down. With her eyes glued to her computer, it took a familiar voice to break her from her trance.

"We heading out for the night." Her associate said with their assistant standing next to him.

Neagley looked up and saw the tired expressions in their faces. As much as she respected her associates and all those that worked at the firm, none of them would have made it under Reacher's command. She nodded at them before responding.

"I'll be out in a bit."

"Sure, you will." The associate said with a smile. "Don't be at it too late."

Neagley looked back down at her screen. Before she could get back to work, she heard a thud. Neagley's eyes shot up as she heard a distinct sound. On the other side of the room, she saw their assistants body drop to the floor. That same distinct sound shot out again, and this time her associate's body fell down to the floor.

The former soldier dived down under her desk. As quickly as she could, she took out a small case. Opening the case, she reached in and took out a pistol. Pulling it back and putting a bullet in the chamber, the former special investigator was ready for battle.

*********

The battle takes place in Neagley's office building. Nina has been sent in by her grandfather to clean up any loose ends that could tie back to their illegal business dealings.

Frances Neagley is armed with a pistol.

Nina is armed with a pistol and has a hidden Sai.

I've heard good things about Reacher but haven't checked it out, and it's been a long time since I've seen Bulletproof Monk.  Upon looking them both up, I'm going to go with Frances and her military background. She must be a top recruit for Reacher for a reason. Also, at the end of your set-up I had the "dived vs. dove" debate in my head for several minutes lol.
